To the experienced and maybe even the not so experienced shaper it would appear a bit rudimentary but… it surfs well in the 2' conditions available. Shaped it with little idea of required volume to suit my weight… 9'*29 *41/2 easily floats 73Kgs. The board is EPS Foam, epoxy resin, 6oz glass, 2 layers top and bottom. The standard surfboard rip off artist in Hawaii walks by the car with a very sharp knife and cuts the straps, then turns around and lifts the board off and walks away. It's a big board so I'm not doing so much up and down but I found this the better option. I tend to reduce the fin size on what comes with the board. I only run a single fin for both my Kalama 11'6 and Oxbow 11 for waves up to 3 feet. Both have 2+1 options. Over that i put in small side fins. Still smaller than the factory fitted ones. FCS GL longboard side fins. This just helps keep hold of that face and keep a high line. There are plenty of board on the market at the moment and believe me we have tried them all! Its been a lot of fun and we have definitely noticed the pros and cons of each one. The Southpoint Kalama 11'6 is a good flat water cruiser. It comes with a deck grip and carbon fibre paddle for $1795. We can do you a really good deal on one… [Link]

I'm riding a Dave Boyd custom from Noosa Longboards. 11 6', 29'wide and 4 1/2. Its my first board and seems to be a good all rounder, good on the flat and the surf. I surfed Double Island Point today in small windy conditions with a mate on a hired Southpoint epoxy. We swapped boards around and found the glass board surfed better and was less effected by the wind. It was, however a very buoyant and stable platform…. [Link]

Not sure about the night paddling in the Brisbane river. Those Citycats fly along the river, sounds to me like you need airbags and a light if your going to paddle where the Citycats go.I might have to give it a go in the noosa river its only 6knots, so should give me enough time to get out of the way…. Ive been riding a 11ft Jimmy Lewis in the surf and on flat water. This is a great first time or cruiser type board.I have just purchased a Jimmy Lewis 10ft,but have only had it out on the lake as yet while I get used to the 28 width compared to the 30 width of the bigger board.I havent fallen off it yet but I know I would have trouble in anything but glassy surf.By the way I paddle in the area south of Newcastle. Eventhough a standard theif would probably look pretty dubious walking down the street with a 12ft board on their head, i still feel more comfortable with a bit of security. The lock is from www.gumbylock.com.au and cost approx $50 each. A little expensnive but does the trick. I would have to agree that we should respect others. I had a surf at TiTree on the weekend and got a few comments from shortboarders. I am a bit of a kook though so perhaps they were fearing their own safety
It is a wiered feeling trying to not catch every wave you possibly can out wide at Ti Tree cause on the paddle board yo ucan pretty much catch all of the waves while letting the short boarders play in the pocket. First Point is a little different though. You definently need to fall in the qu… [Link]

i believe its time to air my views on sup/surfing on the points.the experienced local sup/surfers know how protective the local surfers are of their point waves and our sport is a big threat to the already crowded points.new or inexperienced sup/surfers need to take into account just how easy it is to catch waves compared even to a longboard and not be greedy when surfing the points.a 12 foot board going sideways thru the lineup is pretty scary so a legrope is vital for those who may lose a board, but mostly… [Link]

I changed the Naish 11'6 fin to a 10 dolphin fin and tried it both in the Brisbane River and in the surf. In the river it definently loosened up and made it more difficult to keep a straight line. In the surf it did loosen up the board and made it more ridable. THey were 4ft faces at the Southport Spit and a bit messy so i probably didn't get the full experience but i defintly think it is a better way to go. I use the shorter 8 taller than me paddle for the Naish 10'6 as it feels more comfortable in the waves. The longer 10 longer than me paddle i use for river paddling on the Naish 11'6 as i feel it gives me greater stroke on the confines of flat water. Its hard to give a rule of thumb, because personal preference comes into it a lot as well. You should definitely go at least 6 inches above your height -i agree there. But the best way to know is to try out a few different sizes and see what feels good. In the surf we are finding a shorter paddle is a lot easier to throw around and manouvre, while in the flat water we like the longer paddles so we can stand up straight and concentrate on technique. I think 6-8 inches is a good guide, but you are welcome … [Link]

Its interesting how the differnet boards are holding up. We have been using a range of different epoxy and glass boards over the last 18 months in our school doing both river lessons and surf lessons and have been suprised at the differences. While in most cases the Epoxies are lighter - the Polyester Glass boards like the Laguna Bay models are still really lightweight and seem to be a lot more resistant to rail shatters. The epoxies seem to chip and scratch a lot easier when going in and out of the SUPS … [Link]
