Randy French and Simon Anderson at Sacred Craft 2010
Randy French and Simon Anderson

Sacred Craft was a great success for Surftech last weekend in the San Diego Convention Center! Simon Anderson was the convention’s guest of honor, and rightly so! The inventor of the thruster setup has made a HUGE impact on the development of surfing over the years, and Surftech is pleased to welcome Simon into the family as he works with us to develop a full quiver, utilizing Tuflite and ULTRAFLX technology.

In Tuflite, Surftech and Simon plan on unveiling a 6’0″, 6’2″, 6’4″, 6’6″ and 6’10″ models.

In ULTRAFLX, look for models sized 5’10″, 5’11″, 6’0″, 6’1″, 6’2″, and 6’3″.

The Surftech booth was well stocked with up and coming boards from shapers like Simon Anderson, Xanadu, Stretch, Strive, Rusty, and Surftech’s head shaper and founder Randy French. World class shapers are choosing Surftech because of superior technology and proven performance.

Why do you choose Surftech? Hit us up on facebook and let us know!

Surftech » Surftech Northshore House gettin down to business…

Posted 6 weeks ago

Just off the jet and back on the North Shore! “Mecca”, the “Seven Mile Miracle” whatever you wanna call it, the North Shore of Oahu is the place where the entire surf world collides for two months. The Surftech crew made the five hour pilgrimage to Hawaii with big plans… we’ll be hooking up with some of the world’s best to find some waves and put the boards to the test. We’ll keep you posted on how that’s going. Check back here for updates.

With a truck load of boards we left Honolulu bound for the North Shore. Surf check, Lanis, Logs, Sunset… all looked pretty good. Solid ENE swell in the water. So where’d we surf you ask? Right behind the house. A wedging lefthander, no one out!

With the current running like a river, no food in our guts and light fading fast, we tossed the boards in the truck and raided Foodland. Not a good idea to grocery shop on an empty stomach after surfing for two hours… we had the cart full by isle 3.

Tomorrow morning up at the crack headed for Ehukai.

Stay tuned.

Nearly 900 people, including elite athletes from all over the country, participated in one of the most environmentally conscious triathlons in the world Sunday at McNears Beach County Park on San Rafael California’s east side.

Racers were treated to a perfect day at the second annual Marin County Triathlon, a fundraiser for several nonprofits.

Hawaii’s Kai Sallas wins Oxbow World Longboard Tour Maldives | francais

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 30 October, 2009 : — – Pasta Point Maldives — The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Oxbow World Longboard Tour Maldives event today crowned two champions – Harley Ingeby (Australia) as the ASP 2009 World Longboard Champion and Kai Sallas (Hawaii) as the inaugural Oxbow Maldives event champion.

Sallas (Oahu Island Hawaii) won the event, surfing clean 3 feet (1 meter) surf at Pasta Point defeating Australasia’s Harley Ingelby in a high scoring final that saw Sallas take the win with a combined two wave tally of 15.65 to Ingelby on 14.00. Ingeby’s second placing in today’s final event on the two event ASP 2009 World Longboard Tour secured him the ASP World Longboard Title.

“I’m so stoked to win this event, the waves have been super fun all week and to beat Harley in the final capped off a perfect week for me” said Sallas.“ I started well with 7.65 on my first ride and felt confident that I could back that ride up and take the win, Ingelby came at me hard in the final few minutes but my best ride was my final one and it’s great to win and actually beat the current world champion as well!”

The ASP World Longboard Champion is decided across the ratings from two events and Ingelby’s 1st placing in the season’s opening event in Japan along with his 2nd place here in the Maldives see’s him take the first ASP World Title for the 2009 season. “It’s the best day of my life” said 26 year old Ingelby after the final.

Kai Sallas : photo Credit: © ASP/ CI/ Robertson via Getty Images

“I’ve been close to winning in the past and always felt I could win the title but I’ve also seen many great surfers not win world titles and I was wary that the opportunity could slip – It’s a huge weight off my shoulders and right now the feeling is unbelievable.” Ingelby secured the world title early in the day when he defeated Brazilian Phil Ratzman in a very close see-sawing quarter final.

“It would have been great to take the event win as well as the world title but full marks to Sallas, he surfed a great final and he deserved the win as he’s been a standout all week.” “I really left my run in the final late, I don’t think I had one decent score in the first 20 minutes, when I did get that 8 point ride late in the final I was a real chance but simply could not find a wave to deliver a decent second score” added Ingelby.

Today’s Semi Finals were both tightly fought out with Sallas defeating fellow Hawaiian Ned Snow while Ingelby survived a late challenge in his semi final from French surfer Antoine Delpero winning on a score-line of 14.80 to Delpero on 14.35. With excellent surf throughout the event all surfers enjoyed a great week and it was a fitting finale to the ASP Oxbow Longboard World Tour for 2009.

Surftech » 1st Annual Round The Rock Race

Posted 10 months ago

:: Overview ::

WASHINGTON — The clockwise rounding of Mercer Island, the 1st Annual Round The Rock SUP Race, got underway at 9:45 under gorgeous sunny skies, following a few first-time event delays. Roughly 75 paddlers were on the starting line for the Full Course of 13 miles. The race saw most paddlers stay in a large group for the majority of the downwind East channel run. The fastest paddlers made the turn at the south end of the island slightly ahead of the main group, however they quickly built a lead which served them well as these leaders saw slightly better conditions before the winds and waves kicked up later in the day. The north bound leg on the west side of the island saw large waves and swells, driven by a steady north-northwest wind and lots of motorized boat traffic. Paddlers saw difficult conditions particularly north of the I-90 bridge as the paddlers were nearing the ten mile mark in the race. The winning time was 2 hours and 35 minutes (plus change). There was also a 2 1/2 mile short course which attracted over 50 participants.

Surftech » Jamie Mitchell UNDISPUTED fastest man on water!

Posted 10 months ago

Jamie Mitchell crosses over to take out the 2nd Annual Battle of the Paddle!

DANA POINT, CA. – (October 3, 2009) — Australian Jaime Mitchell is the reigning eight time champ of the grueling Molokai to Oahu Paddleboard Race held every July. Known in elite paddleboard circles for his prone paddling prowess, Mitchell recently took his paddling act to his feet at Doheny Beach, California for Rainbow Sandals’ 2nd Annual Battle of the Paddle, the world’s largest Stand Up Paddle (SUP) race.

2009 Rainbow Sandals BOP Champion!

“Mitchell is more suited for the races in Hawai’i than in California”, “…a fast prone paddler, but he won’t hang with the top guys in stand up”, was the online chatter posted on message boards before October 3rd, 2009. Accused of being a one-dimensional athlete, Mitchell surprised all with a stunning win, a full 4 minutes and 39 seconds ahead of waterman Chuck Patterson’s winning time at the previous year’s event.

The morning after Mitchell’s glorious victory, critics ate their words and Wheaties in stunned silence. Mitchell’s magic formula: sheer athletic ability and a unique SUP race board designed with similar features to his Molokai to Oahu prone race board.

For stand up paddling’s elite, the Battle of the Paddle represents the world’s largest and most competitive race. A “motocross” style course has participants zig-zagging in and out of the breaking surf. It’s a challenge that tests the endurance and surfing skills of the world’s best watermen and women. Athletes fly in from around the world to compete for the coveted Battle of the Paddle crown and a cash purse of $25,000.

Doheny Beach resembled a NASCAR event last Saturday morning with dozens of vendors showing off their latest speed machines. With its festive atmosphere and a jubilant throng of onlookers staking out viewing spots on the sand, the salt air was buzzing with anticipation. As the sun rose that morning, no one could have anticipated what was in store. Mitchell had never competed in a stand up paddle race in the USA before.

Starting Line

Could the success he’s enjoyed in traditional “prone” paddle races be his in an SUP event? Dozens of rivals were there to take on the challenge. The sudden popularity of SUP in the fitness, kayaking and surf worlds has fueled fierce competition amongst athletes, board designers and shapers. Every innovator, huckster, fitness guru and experienced board and boat builder is climbing on the SUP bandwagon.

With a building swell and increasing onshore winds, this year’s race was to be far more challenging than the last. Mid-way into the first of four laps, and nearing the lead, Mitchell’s hopes were nearly dashed when he fell, loosing his board. Caught in white water, the board arrived almost back to shore without him. Swimming to recover it, Mitchell got back on course. The mishap had cost him approximately eight places.

Jamie extends his lead

Now in tenth place, he summoned his inner warrior to make up the lost time. When he overtook young phenom Slater Trout and Andrew Logreco to take the lead with a nice margin, the winner was clearly “MITCHO!”, a first time BOP competitor. “After the wipeout at the south buoy, I just put my head down and told myself that I wasn’t going to make any more mistakes” commented Mitchell.

Indeed, his remaining three laps were aided by surf skills honed in Australia and Hawai’i. Mitchell, perfectly positioned, surfed several set waves which extended his lead. Jamie completed the 5 mile course with a record time of 1:07:45. The ever so humble “Mitcho” gave credit for his win to his board designers, and added, “I’ve been busy traveling and working with my surf school back home so we didn’t really have much time to train before coming out to California.”

Just days prior to the Battle of the Paddle, Mitchell and a tight knit crew of fellow Aussies were up in San Francisco for the Hennessey International Paddleboarding Championships. Mitchell was there to defend his title in the Unlimited (prone paddle) Class. Victory was his when he won that race with more than a three minute lead.

By about 2:30 in the afternoon on Saturday, Mitcho’s lead at Doheny had left little doubt who’s board was the fastest! Mitchell’s unconventional SUP board has a unique concave bottom, chine rails and consistent thickness flow from nose to tail. A stark contrast to the majority of racing boards in the water, Mitchell’s board was designed by Lahui Kai, the Australian partnership of Adrian Birse and Mick Di Betta. The “Mitcho”, Jamie Mitchell’s 12’6″ model racing SUP board will be manufactured by Surftech, the innovative Santa Cruz, California company known for bringing exclusive shapes by elite designers to market. Surftech’s unique proprietary construction makes their boards both hi-performance and ultra-durable. Fast, stable & light, the 12’6″ Mitcho is a great board for racing or cruising on a long paddle. It’s a solid and proven performer, even in windy or bumpy conditions. Look for Surftech’s Mitcho in stores worldwide by Spring 2010.

Congrats Mate!!

Surftech » Fall in West Virginia on an SUP

Posted 11 months ago

(user submitted)

Last weekend Mette and I were in southern WV for the Gauley Fest (an annual whitewater river festival). Every fall the Army Corp of Engineers draws down Summersville lake to its winter level and as a result for 6 weeks in the fall the Gauley river has consistent flows that make for some world class whitewater.

We decided to skip the crowds on the river on Saturday and spend a relaxing day paddling the 14′ Bark and 10’6 Pearson Arrow Laird around Summersville lake. This is an amazing lake that is absolutely beautiful and great for SUP. If you are ever in the area make sure to check it out.

Here are a few pics from the day.

Enjoy,

Surftech » The CSSL kicked off the 09/10 season with Super Typhoon Choi-Wan!!

Posted 11 months ago

The newly formed Core Scholastic Surf League couldn’t have picked a better day to kick of it’s new league and season. Saturday was the first fog free day that Santa Cruz had seen in over a week.

Mid-day set

More importantly, thanks to Super Typhoon Choi-wan, the waves started arriving pre-dawn and by mid day there were consistent over-head sets for the high school competitors to rip!

The Core Scholastic Surf League Debut

The Core Scholastic Surf League or CSSL is a new non-profit surf league where high school and middle school surf teams compete in surf contests at marquee locations from Santa Cruz to Half Moon Bay. “The CSSL is off to a great start” said Executive director Kim Clary, “we have a dedicated crew that’s put in a lot of hours over the past four months to make sure that Saturday’s contest ran very smoothly.”

Steamer Lane Stadium

With the first contest of the High School season being held at Steamer Lane, Santa Cruz High coach Joe Hutson had his team more than prepared to defend their home turf. “We’ve been doing some pretty intense workouts up at Natural Bridges lately” reported Joe, “I’ve had the kids running in the deep sand, sprinting up the sand hill, push-ups, sit-ups… just trying to get them whipped into shape for the new season.”

Coach Hutson observes freshman, Willie Eagleton about to belt the lip.

Whatever Joe has them doing, seems to be working as Santa Cruz opened up the day with a decisive win over cross town rival Soquel High, 64–43. The scrappy SCHS Cardinals team ended up nearly filling the Men’s Shortboard final at the end of the day, with five of the six finalists being from Santa Cruz High.

Sean Burns (Santa Cruz High) took the Men’s Shortboard win, with Kai Madeiros (Harbor High) winning Men’s Longboard, Carly Wilson (Harbor High) winning Women’s Shortboard, McKenzie Stair (Soquel High) winning Women’s Longboard & Pete Mueller (Santa Cruz High) taking top honors in the Co-Ed Bodyboard division.

Women’s Shortboard Finalists

The remaining team vs. team results feature Aptos High defeating Scotts Valley High 74–44 and Half Moon Bay High took down Harbor High in a close battle, 59–55.

The next CSSL contest will be at Waddell State Beach just north of Santa Cruz, Ca. November 20th & 21st.

Surftech » SOUTHEAST SUP CHAMPIONSHIP RACE RECAP

Posted 11 months ago

Despite heavy winds and rain, the 1st Annual Southeast SUP Championships went off yesterday. The bad weather couldn’t dampen the participants’ spirits as over 50 paddlers paddled the race. Racers from Hawaii, California, Florida and Virginia joined local paddlers all in search of the crown. Jeremy Riggs ended up claiming the title, “SOUTHEAST SUP CHAMPION”, finishing with a time of 41.18 minutes. The temperatures were low, but just like the winds during the race, the stoke remained high throughout the day.

Racers of all ages and abilities showed up in many different race attire

Racers gathered for last minute course debriefing before heading out to the start line of the 3.5 mile course

The US Coast Guard was there, not for the entertainment, to make sure safety was the number one priority.

Surftech » Paddleboarding champ’s close encounter with humpback whale

Posted 11 months ago

EIGHT-TIME world paddleboarding champion Jamie Mitchell had the surprise of his life when a humpback whale surfaced centimetres away from him off the New South Wales north coast yesterday.

Mitchell told news.com.au he was out filming a pilot for his coming documentary, Living in Liquid, when a pod of up to five humpbacks surfaced, and started following him off Tweed Heads at about 7.30am (AEST).

He said the pod played around him for about 10 minutes.

“We were just out on the water paddling around and all of a sudden, boom, a whale breached about 100m away from me,” he said today.

“I thought that was pretty cool and then all of a sudden another whale came up right in front of me.

“At the start it was sort of scary, I got goosebumps and the adrenalin started flowing.

“But then I realized that they were just playing. They swam right underneath my board and I thought I’d be in strife if they came up but they had a good sense of where I was.”

The 32-year-old, who lives on the Gold Coast and spends most of his time in the water, said the migrating humpbacks drifted off after a while.

“It’s certainly the closest I’ve ever been to them,” he said.

Mitchell is soon heading to California to compete in the Hennessey’s International Paddleboard Race.

Surftech » Hobie checks in after the Gore Canyon SUP demo in Colorado

Posted 12 months ago

Hey Guys,

What a weekend. The Gore Canyon festival was a huge hit once again and the turnout was great. So was the response to stand up paddling! I arrived Friday and within an hour had five people out on boards running the class II stretch from our camp spot to about three miles downstream. One of the paddlers had done it before and the other four were first timers, and they all did great. If I had 10 boards they would have been used too. I had to turn people away as I had five boards total. We ended up doing a couple runs so everyone got a chance.

Mellow run

On Saturday I volunteered for the race as the head finish line timer. I could have raced but wanted to give my shoulder some rest from kayaking to make sure it’s strong. Stand up paddling puts little to no stress on it compared to kayaking so I’ve been super stoked on being able to run rivers on my board. I decided to hike up from the bottom and paddle up the flat-water to the finish line so I could paddle the mile down to the camp ground when the race was over. We even used the Blacktip and Surftech paddle to mark the finish line for the racers. Wrapped it in pink ribbon and stuck it out next to the river so paddlers knew where the race ended.

A BLAST for the whole family! Check out the finish line…

Typical of the race everyone gathered at the finish line for a bit of partying before paddling downstream to the camp ground and race headquarters. You should have heard the hooting and cheers when I jumped on my board and ran the first rapid in front of everyone! They were so fired up. I paddled the remaining class III rapids with a few dozen kayakers /rafters and several of them asked when they could try it out. “Back at camp” I told them and sure enough a bunch showed up. Some racers, a few rafters with their families and others all did a down river with me. Must have had 25 people in our group. We switched out boards and rafts and just made our way down. We had kids as young as 4 on them to new paddlers as old as 55 on the same section of river. I even had Bill Mattison, captain of Team Vail (they won the Eco challenge a few years back) He was so into it. Asked where to get a board also. Talk about a diverse crowd of river runners. Everyone picked up SUP fast and many asked questions about what board to buy and where can they get them. A total success with even more folks coming up to me at the awards ceremony and party asking about boards and where to get them to try.

So thanks to Surftech for having boards out here for paddlers to try out. All we have to do is get people on the boards and the rest takes care of itself. The river was full of stand up stoke this weekend. Stand up paddling is going to BOOM out here by next summer, watch.

Paddle,
hobie

Surftech » Surftech team rider, Craig Colbran wins China Coast Quiksilver Surf Contest

Posted 12 months ago

Surftech China Coast (Hong Kong) team rider Craig Colbran comfortably secured
his rightful 1st place at the recent Quiksilver shortboard competition in Taiwan.
Craig was riding a Tuflite Byrne 6’0” Tom Carrol signature model fish, which was
the perfect choice for the soft mushy 3’-5’ waves that built in size over the 2 day
comp. Winds were mostly light with perfect beach going conditions. The massive
spectator crowd ranged from curious families who had never seen a surfboard
before to the usual surfing enthusiasts that had traveled the globe to be there.

The event, which was held at Wushi Harbour Beach, Toucheng, Yilan (north east
part of the Taiwan Mainland) was a collaboration of Local Surf Clubs and the Yilan
government as part of the two-week rain festival celebrations.

There were 178 contestants over all divisions, which included Mens & Womens
short and longboard, body boarding and a Grom’s shortboard division.

Surftech » Gerry Lopez’s ultimate SUP quiver now available in stores

Posted 13 months ago

“Surfing is a deeply wonderful thing – anytime, anywhere and any way”
– Gerry Lopez from his book “Surf is where you find it”.

“The new boards turned out way better than I expected. I thought I made all of them for bigger guys than me but after riding them, I found .….. I really like them. And I rode them in some very challenging surf in Hawaii at Popular’s, Number Three’s, Kaiser’s, Rockpile’s, Ala Moana Bowls, Old Man’s, Rice Bowls and Zero’s. This was a wide range of different types of waves and I liked the handling in the bigger waves, the speed, the lightness, the durability and just generally how well they all surfed. I particularly liked the 8’11″ quad and was surprised when some of my 200+ lbs. friends floated nicely on it and loved it as well. I think we have a nice trio of good surfing SUP boards for pretty much any range of conditions.” — Gerry Lopez

Gerry’s deep relationship with the water is exceedingly evident in the smooth lines and subtle curves of each of his three new Surftech stand up paddleboards. “The 9’6″ & 10′ Surf Music boards were designed specifically with wave riding in mind. Many SUP shapes lean more toward the paddling side but I have taken the liberty of assuming the customer has already learned his paddling/balance skills and is looking to maximize his surfing performance.” Said Gerry. “The 8’11″ Lil Darlin’ is basically a scaled down version of the Surf Music series but with a quad fin set-up. I have found the quad fins to work very well in wave riding… looser, faster and just as positive.”

The much-anticipated release of Gerry’s three-board SUP quiver has finally arrived! Stop in to your local surf shop or stand up paddleboard dealer to check them out for yourself. And don’t be surprised if after stroking into your first wave on a Lopez Tuflite board, you find yourself soul arching off the bottom into a perfect crystal cavern and gliding effortlessly across the wave’s face and feel a little bit of Gerry with you as you glide over the shoulder and paddle back out for another one…

Kicking off this years Vintage Auction weekend festivities in Honolulu, Surftech hosted a great party attended by over 400 surfers, shapers, and collectors from around the world. It was great to see the local surf community come together to create a night to remember. Tom Stone brought over a group of beautiful Koa boards and there was an amazing art show featuring many top surf artists and photographers. Local chefs provided everyone with excellent grinds and a hosted bar was in full swing. Steve Cranston and the Surftech crew really knocked themselves out to transform the warehouse into something that felt more like an art gallery or club and a good time was had by all.

Surftech » Remembering Velzy

Posted 15 months ago

The Hawk. Photo taken by Rosemary Reimers Rice

Today marks the fourth anniversary of the passing of one of the Surfing’s most legendary characters. Dale Velzy was much more than a surfer or shaper. He was a cowboy, a hot-rodder, a craftsman, he was “The Hawk”. Dale’s been credited with being the first surfer ever to hang ten, he opened the first surfshop, Velzy Surfboards in Hermosa Beach and was the first to put a name on a surfboard. Velzy essentially started what we now know as the surfboard industry.

Another important first came in the early 1990’s when Velzy became the first surfboard shaper to sign on with Randy French and Surftech. It was a bold move at that time which continues to pay off as his masterful shapes are still being reproduced and surfed by surfers all around the world.

Johnny & Dale painted by Rosemary Reimers Rice

We’d like to take a moment to express our sincere gratitude to Dale for his willingness to open his mind about a new way to build a surfboard almost 20 years ago. Without his attention to detail and high quality standards, Surftech may not be where we are today. Thank you Velzy for helping to lay Surftech’s foundation.

You may be gone but you will always be in the hearts of everyone here at Surftech.

Surftech » Surftech leads the way at Wildflower

Posted 16 months ago

Lake San Antonio, Ca. – Blistering heat together with torrential downpours greeted the more than 7,000 triathletes at the 2009 Avia Wildflower Triathlon the first weekend of May. The Wildflower’s festival like atmosphere and outdoor camping accommodations are why it’s become known as the “Woodstock” of triathlons. But make no mistake, the hilly bike course and on and off road run legs are considered some of the most challenging courses in North America.

Meghan & George oversee the start line

Surftech was there providing water safety, stand up paddle demos for athletes and spectators and utilized Surftech Triathlete team member Meghan Browne (2009 Ironman World Championship qualifier) to lead the pro men’s wave and Surftech paddlesports manager, George Phiripes to lead the pro women’s waves of the swim course. “This year’s event marked the first time that we’ve had Surftech’s stand up paddlers leading the swim legs of the race,” said triathlon Hall-of-Famer & lead Wildflower announcer, Julie Moss. “Meghan looked so regal standing tall on her Surftech board out in front of our pro athletes. It was a huge benefit to the swimmers having the ability to site off of the Surftech paddlers.”

George leads the Pro Women wave

This year’s Wildflower race kicked off a full calendar of multisport events that Surftech will be participating in this summer. Not only will they be holding on water demos, staffing expo booths, lending water support and leading the swim legs of various races throughout the country, but they’ll also be participating in the events as competitors.

Surftech » How to stick a 360 air – with Matt Rockhold

Posted 16 months ago

Matt “Rocky” Rockhold is one of surfing’s most “Freak-uent Flyers”. Working with Xanadu for more than ten years, things started to get costly for both rider and shaper. With every air attempt, his boards were quickly disintegrating. Here Rocky enlightens us on how to stomp a 360 air without stomping your foot through your board.

“Why would I sacrifice good waves on shitty boards when I don’t have to.” – Rocky

Rocky, what advise do you have for a surfer wanting to learn to land airs?

It’s all about practice. The key is committing to the air and staying over your board. And if you can’t afford to buy a new board every two months, you need to be on a Tuflite. Before I was riding Tuflites I was “demoing” a lot of boards. The decks of my boards looked like the craters on the moon after about a week.

What do you think is the best surfboard construction for doing airs?

Tuflite is hand’s down. I ride my Tuflite boards everyday and probably do 50 airs a day. Why would I ride a board if it doesn’t perform right? Why would I sacrifice good waves on shitty boards when I don’t have to. That’s why I ride these boards, they perform well and they hold up. Who wouldn’t want a board that works insane, lasts forever and when you do finally need a new one, you know it’s gonna work just as good as the last one.

Photo: Nelly

Air 101, walk us through a frontside air 360 from take-off to landing.

Step 1 – You need to get as much speed as you can down the line. Usually I know if I’m gonna do a 360 or not before I hit the lip.

Step 2 – You need to do a steeper bottom turn so you hit the lip more vertical and time your take-off so when the lip throws, you pop off it and into the air.

Step 3 – As you leave the lip and your tail releases, kick your tail out so it rotates around toward the flats, and make sure that you stay on top of your board the entire time.

Step 4 – Try to really get that tail around in the air, then just stomp your landing and look for the next section.

Step 5 – When you land, make sure to absorb the landing by bending your knees. A few years a go I broke my leg and dislocated my ankle on a straight legged landing.

“Oh, and you don’t have to be 6’4” and 205 lbs to ride my models. We built them in five different
sizes so everyone can ramp out on ‘em!”

Surftech » SHANE DORIAN & JOHN CARPER PUT THEIR SPIN ON TECHNOLOGY VS. PERFORMANCE

Posted 16 months ago

Shane Dorian & John Carper’s 19-year board design development is one of the longest standing surfer/shaper relationships in pro surfing today. After eight years of working with Surftech to re-produce Shane’s favorite boards in Tuflite & TL2 construction, we caught up with them to hear how the boards are working out.
While Shane is no longer chasing around a world title on the WCT, he has been able to concentrate on chasing bigger and better waves, which truly puts his equipment to the test. From finishing # 4 in the world on the WCT in 2000, to winning the Billabong XXL award for “Ride of the Year in 2008, few surfers are as well rounded & diverse as Shane.

“The best 2 boards I have had in the last 2 years were TL2s. I filmed my whole part of “Stranger Than Fiction” (steele’s new movie) on my TL2.” – Shane Dorian

Shane Dorain boosting on his JC Tuflite

Hey John, how many years have you been working with Surftech and how’s it gone so far?

JC – About 8 years. It’s been good. There is a dynamic tension between us that really challenges us to produce a better product. We have learned a lot about composite technology during these years.

Shane, what did you think of the Tuflite boards after you had ridden them for a while?

SD – I was blown away at the strength. I’ve ridden the same original board every year on Tavarua since I got it maybe 6 years ago. The thing is still in perfect condition. I don’t know how many days of epic Cloudbreak that thing has seen!

Was there any session that stands out in your mind where you really had the chance to put your Tuflite boards to the test?

SD – I ride them all the time in all conditions. They work really well and they can’t be beat in terms of strength.

John, what do you think are the advantages of the Tuflite and TL2 constructions and how do you feel about Shane riding the TL2 boards all the time?

JC – They’re strong and light and they don’t get ugly when they are old. I wish I was a Tuflite! As for Shane, he truthfully loves them and would still be riding the original ones if they hadn’t gotten blasted by a jet engine in Bali thanks to a lame luggage handler. I just made him a new quiver of TL2’s.

You have a quiver of Tuflite and TL2 boards in your backyard on the North Shore. How has the feedback been with people trying the boards?

JC – Everybody that rides them is stoked and since they are so strong I never hesitate letting people ride them. On the North Shore, letting a friend borrow your board is like letting another cowboy ride your horse. On weekends, when all the longboarders are out, I’ll ride the 7′5″ EQUALIZER. I call it “Crowd Control”. It paddles as good as a longboard but surfs like a short board.

Shane, how about TL2, how did you get involved with that project and did you need to adjust your surfing at all to get used to the flex of a TL2?

SD – The Surftech guys told me what they were trying to develop so I got on board and tried to get as close as possible to what I was riding in my high-performance short boards. As for the flex, it’s really close. The best 2 boards I have had in the last 2 years were TL2s. I filmed my whole part of “Stranger Than Fiction” (Steele’s new movie) on my TL2.

Anything else that we haven’t covered regarding your Tuflite & TL2 models that you want to talk about?

SD – No. I love them. Been riding them for years and will continue to.
Mahalo, sd

Surftech » Surftech gives SUP clinic to Olympic Training Center Athletes

Posted 17 months ago

Elite endurance athletes from the Olympic ranks are always looking for ways to add some flavor to their training regiment. So our good friend Brent Allen USA Triathlon Expert level Coach helped coordinate an outing on Mission Bay (San Diego, CA). We sent Sales Manager Ty Zulim down in our Super-Surftech-Sprinter loaded to the roof with SUPs. Surftech Endurance Athlete, Roch Frey, head coach at www.multisports.com; took time out of his busy schedule to take part and clinic the athletes about the physical benefits of stand up paddling and proper stand up paddle technique. Roch droppin some SUP knowledge

Roch droppin some SUP knowledge

We ended up having an impressive group from the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, CA which included: Olympic Rowers Dan Walsh, Sam Stitt, Wes Tiermani, Maggie Hogan, former pro-cyclist Saul Raisin, Elite triathletes Jen Spieldenner, Matt Chrabot, and Ethan Brown. It was a great break for all of the athletes to learn something new that gave them a GREAT core work-out and time on the water.

When triathletes head to the open water it is usually for the first part of their triathlon swim-bike-run. When rowers head to the water it is normally to take a seat in one of the many rowing boats. This was a great opportunity for all of them to have a new perspective on the water and to work on different muscle groups that they don’t normally target in their usual training.

The future of Olympic Athlete training

Many triathlon coaches are now finding Surftech stand up paddle boards are the perfect piece of equipment to teach open water swimming from. “It is like a moving pool deck. It creates an optimal vantage point to communicate with the athletes while they’re in the water and a give them direction”. All the Olympic athletes and Olympic hopefuls for the 2012 games where stoked and are looking forward to getting back out on the Surftech stand up boards for more training.
