Returning for year two, after an great turn out in 2009, Werner Paddle's paddling instructor Danny Mongno will be hosted by the Dinghy Shop, Amityville NY, the evening of March 30th, for an on land instructional seminar.

Danny Mongno.NYY

Title- Paddles and Paddling. Version 2.0 Paddling in the Wind

The sure fire way to guarantee more fun while paddling is to use less energy.  The best two ways to get started on this quest is to assure you are using the proper fitting paddle and to perform strokes more efficiently.  In Paddles and Paddling-Version 2.0, Werner Paddle's kayak instructor Danny Mongno will expand on the information he shared with us in past seminars.  Starting with the paddle, he will quickly review low angle and high angle paddling, paddle fit options and help prescribe the perfect fitting paddle for each individual.  From their we will take the basic core principles of Boat and Body control, that we focused on in the past, and apply then to windy wavy conditions, something we all need to deal with from time to time.   This will be an interactive dry land instructional seminar, with the ultimate goal to send you home with the knowledge of what is the perfect paddle for you and some skills practice and drills you can do at home, between paddling sessions.  Whether you a sea kayaker, fisherman or quietly exploring the waters in your back yard, bring an open mind and get ready to have fun.  Call the shop, 1-631-264-0005, to get directions, times and to let them no you ar ecoming, it filled up fast last year.  Danny is stoked to be back on his home town of Long Island and looks forward to working with you all.  See you at the Dinghy Shop.

John Carmody Joins The Werner Team & Navigates You Into Safer Waters

Posted 7 days ago

Werner Paddles welcomes sea kayaker and coach John Carmody to the team in 2010.

John

We caught up with John recently and got a taste of what he has been up to this winter.  Here are some photos and his tales from his navigation classes this winter

Img 8587
“As the cold of winter turns the liquid H2O to solid, it’s hard to think about getting on the water. The ocean temperature is hovering around 38 degrees and the prevailing Northwest winds have settled in. It’s a great time to think about Kayak Navigation. On January 16th, I ventured up to Lachine, Quebec to work with Sylvain Bedard, www.kayaksylvainbedard.com and a great group of paddlers. Sylvain is one of the most qualified Sea Kayak instructors in Quebec’s FQCK being a Level IV Coach and a Level I, II & III Trainer in their scheme. I presented the BCU Coastal Navigation and Tidal Planning course. It’s a very concentrated course covering the practical aspects of weather, tides and currents, charts and compass and trip planning and is the safety pre requisite for the new 4Star Sea Trip Leader Award.

P1160008

There was a large range of experience in the group and many personal experiences enabled us to put some practicality to the subject. The group is hoping to get together on a regular basis and challenge their navigation skills.  We took over Sylvain’s home  for the day and had a great time. Thanks."

Keeping busy indoors is a valuable skill as a kayaker when you live in Maine in the winter.  Here John hits the road again, this time in New York.

P1160011

“Next up was Voorheesville, NY to do another Coastal Navigation and Tidal Planning Course. The Course was organized by John Ozard, UKCC Level 1 Coach. We had a great venue in the old Library, now the Old  Songs Inc. It’s now used for musical events and dances and was a great spot to spread out the charts! Again, the experience of the participants was varied, but Pete Devitt, UKCC Level 1 Coach, Alan Mapes, UKCC Level 2 Trainee, Cheryl and Anthony were a great help to everyone. Thanks, again."

P1310019

“Navigation and seamanship are passions of mine. It’s what gave people the ability to cross oceans! It has a basis in science, but, especially in a sea kayak, is an art. I encourage you all to practice over the winter. Take out a chart of an area that interests you, look at the tide and current tables, read the cruising guides and plan a trip! It’s a great way to go to on to an exotic destination without venturing too far from the woodstove!!"

Thanks John, this is great stuff.

If you are interested in learning more about the art of navigation you can find John on our blog through out the year giving tips and of course get a closer look at his class offerings at www.seacliffkayakers.com

Canoeing Gets Some Long Overdue Attention

Posted 13 days ago

Canoeists are often overlooked in much of paddlesports media, with the lions share of attention going to whitewater, expedition sea paddling and the booming sport of stand up paddle.  But those days are coming to a close as film makers begin to focus on our single bladed brothers and sisters.

Justine Curgenven, who made sea kayaking cool with her award winning 'This is the Sea' series of sea kayaking DVD's, has been busy for the past year making a new movie about Canoeing, as in open top canoeing. Here's what Justine has to say about the movie:'THIS IS CANOEING” is a 2-disc celebration of canoeing, showcasing top single-blade paddlers in their pursuit of remote wilderness journeys or challenging white water. Multi-award winning film maker, Justine Curgenven captures the essence of canoeing in 12 short films. From open canoe slalom races to 1,000 mile birchbark expeditions, Justine provides insights into the diversity of the sport and the influential people who tell it’s story. Immerse yourself in this globe-trotting 3 hours of adventure to world class canoeing destinations in Canada, the United States, Scotland & Wales. Innovatively filmed with headcams and on-board cameras to take you to the heart of the action.'

There are plenty of familiar faces in the film including Werner supported athletes Bob Foote, Karen Knight and up and coming paddling sensation Hailey Thompson.  Even Werner's Eastern Canadian Sales Rep, Mark Scriver, makes an apperance.

Check out the trailer:

You can also see some single bladed love coming from the crew at LVM, as they showcase Eli Helbert on the Rio de Oro last week while filming for The Canoe Movie. Check out Eli's Golden Stroke…

The Canoe Movie is giving some well deserved props to canoeists as well.  Check out their trailer…

Any one remember this photo?

Ice
Well we are stoked if you do!  I can remind the rest of you, check out the February 10th 2009 post, on the Werner Paddles blog, sent in from Jim Misiewicz and the hard core SUP crew at The Outpost of Holland in Holland Michigan.  Well this was no circus stunt to drive up interest in stand up paddling, for these guys and gals SUP has become part of their souls and the ice is as much a part of their paddling as sand on your feet.  Almost a year to the day Jim sent us some more pics of their 2010 winter stand up paddling trips.

If you are in the Holland area, looking for a day trip or just a reason to get out of the house and try something new, be sure to check out the SUP pool demos The Outpost has going on all winter and spring. If this looks nuts you need to give it a try, the stability of the boards is just amazing and you are about as likely to get soaked as you are cross country skiing.  Thanks again to Jim and his paddling buddies for the post.

Winterkayaking3_fs[1]
There was a time when scenes like this, photo of Trish Walter, taken on the "T-Ville" section of the Farmington River, CT, were shared by "Experts Only."  However with advancements in gear and better instruction more readily available, paddling earlier or deeper into the shoulder seasons, or all winter long for that matter, is becoming more and more accesible to the everyday paddler.  It is the love of the peace and quiet, the solitude of off season paddling that spawned Collinsville Canoe and Kayak's, "Paddle University."  Join the staff of CCK, paddling instructors and industry experts as they kick off their 20 Year Anniversary on March 6th with this great new event.

Jeep_02_fs[1]
Throughout the day attend classes on the challenges associated with cold water paddling and how to dress and plan for it, on land stroke and skill work, choosing the best gear for you and individual segments looking at canoeing, white water boating, kayak fishing, recreational and touring kayaking and the exciting new sport of stand up paddling.   In between classes get your first look at all the new 2010 boats and gear as they continue to roll off the trucks and onto the shelves.  Werner Paddles will be represented by paddling instructor Danny Mongno, taking you through a variety of topics through out the day including  more efficient paddling by using the proper fitting paddle and better stroke work.  Be sure to call the shop (860) 693-6977 for more details or check out the web site for a class schedule.  Centrally located to so many paddlers, set in the beautiful Famington River valley, Paddle University is a must attend event for north east paddlers looking to meet up with friends, take some classes, check out some gear and kick off the spring paddling season.  See you there!

Werner Paddles: Voted 2nd Best Company To Do Business With For The Second Year In A Row

Posted 6 weeks ago

WPlogo_stacked.compress Werner Paddles     was voted the second best company to do business in the Outdoor Industry, in the 2009 SNEWS Outdoor Retailer Dealer Survey.  The survey appears in the Winter 2010 issue of SNEWS magazine and full results will be posted on line February 1, 2010.

Werner captured the number two position for the second year in a row after moving up two places, from number four, in the same survey in 2007.  “It is such a great honor to be named in top positions three years in a row.  This is especially important to us, in that it is our dealers who cast the votes.  It takes our entire team; great product design, quality production, on time delivery, and our sales, service and marketing teams focusing on helping our dealers sell through.  These seem like basic concepts, but it is our area of focus”, says Jim Miller    , Werner’s Marketing Manager.

The SNEWS full survey lists the best and worst vendors to do business with.  Werner landed right behind The North Face who took the number one "Best Supplier To Do Business With" position.

“We look forward to working in partnership with our dealers in the coming season. Our service really is a margin builder and a reason we repeatedly get recognized by our dealers,” says Miller.

To get the full results you will need to be an All Access SNEWS subscriber. You can login to view the results or subscribe by visiting the SNEWS site.

Werner Athlete, Paul Kuthe Featured On "The Season"

Posted 6 weeks ago

Werner Paddles World Team Member, Paul Kuthe is being featured in a new web television project, titled The Season, which followes five athletes through the course of a single season in the Pacific Northwest. A veteran climber invents a new piece of gear.  A pro snowboarder searches for a way to return to the roots of his sport.  A boulderer returns from a series of injuries with new perspective.  A family man goes to Whistler to test himself against mountain biking’s elite. A young sea kayaker (Paul Kuthe) with a troubled past sets out to reinvent his sport.

Here is what Paul has to say about getting involved in this project…

Ever since we filmed Pacific Horizons together, I have jumped at the chance to work with Bryan Smith.  His film projects have opened more doors for me than I ever could have imagined.  At my roots I am a whitewater addict, but have found amazing success within the world of sea kayaking with Bryan's help.  When he came to me with this idea about a web series that would feature sea AND whitewater paddling I agreed without hesitation.  How else would I convince my boss to let me off work to go creeking in B.C. in the middle of our busiest time.  Check out The Season…you won't be disappointed.
 -Paul Kuthe

BTW – Bryan Smith is doing some incredible work with the cable cam.  Don't miss this.

Part Two. 3 Werner-migos Stand Up in Puerto Rico

Posted 7 weeks ago

It has been a crazy two weeks for the team at Werner Paddles and it created a slow down in getting all the photos from the 3 Werner-migos stand up trip to Puerto Rico.  Fresh off the plane we met up with the crew for the Surf Expo show in Orlando and it has just been go, go, go.  Here are some more pics we just pulled together from Bruce's camera.

Jobos-Glass 2

Jobos is reef break but plenty deep with plenty of  sand mixed in, real mellow.  There are so many places to take off you can leave the main point the "heavies" and still get tons of waves.  Hard to tell from the deck but it was chest to head high this day, you can see how clean it was!

Group

This rental car was SO bad!  So we just beat it down, the roof was just a bit tweaked.  (If any of you work for a rental car place keep it zipped!)

Lonely at the top
Jim was so afraid we were gonna ditch his ass , he stayed close to the boards at all times.

Oversize
Jet Blue was so SICK!  Best airline I ever flew, way easy and cheap to fly with boards.  Thanks to Dakine for making killer SUP bags.

Paddle
It's hard to shoot surf unless you have the killer lens, plus we were having to much fun to even take the cameras out.  One of two shots of us paddling, Danny heading back out at Little Malibus.  The board is a Surftech, Gerry Lopex "Surf Music" and it was the goods!  78" Werner Nitro paddle.

Hope you all enjoyed, now get out there and have your own tropical stand up adventure.

PR-Surf Expo-10 009
(words by Danny Mongno. Photos by Jim Miller.)

Far and away the best part of my job is that I work with my friends and that says a lot considering how many great things there are about working at Werner Paddles.  So when the plans to stand up paddle in Puerto Rico this winter with Bruce Furrer and Jim Miller were finally laid down, when the boards were loaded on the plane and the first cocktail was ordered, I knew it was going to be a great trip.

PR-Surf Expo-10 007
We certainly wanted some good surf, no doubt, but the last thing we wanted was to be stressing on vacation.  One of the Atlantic's surf meccas, the North Coast of PR can dish up whatever you are looking for, need a gut check they got plenty of that trust me.  Luckily with the help of the best surf/SUP shops on the Island, Beach Cats, Aquatica Dive and Surf and Mar Azul, we found what we wanted, perfect stomach to head high glass.  We stayed at The Ocean Front at Jobos Beach and surfed some there and depending on the wind and swell directions also travelled to Wilderness, about 15 minutes and down to Little Malibus in Rincon, about 45.  (Check out the map provided by Mar Azul to get a lay of the land.)

PR-Surf Expo-10 014
We all agreed the key to good SUP surf trip is to avoid the heavily surfed, localized spots and Jobos is great for that and really consistent.  The folks at the Ocean Front were awesome, the rooms were clean and affordable and the food was authentic.  Thank you to all the friendly staff, especially Javier and Leo, our drinking and life advisors at the open air bar.  Now if you want to be closer to the surf city of Rincon, Bunger Surf Shop on Long Island NY has a sick hotel walking distance to Sandy Beach, Antonios and Marias and a short drive to Tres Palmas and our favorite Little Malibus.  A right hand point break with an easy paddle out through the harbor it was a great place to hide from the wind and catch some killer waves.  The water was crystal clear and super warm, however we all at one time or another had wished there was a bit more of it between our fins and the razor sharp reef.

PR-Surf Expo-10 003
If you are just looking to get some sun and see the gorgeous coral reefs and abundant aquatic life from your stand up board, both Bobby at Mar Azul and Jose at Aquatica had some killer touring options as well.  In the end we all felt Puerto Rico was a really easy, laid back winter vacation spot.  You know we have Dan Gavere, Nikki Gregg and Kainoa Beaupre on our team to charge the big stuff.  The 3 Werner-migos however were just looking to take in the Island vibe, catch some fun waves and enjoy stand up for what it is.  So if you are looking to get out of the cold for a bit there are plenty of SUP opportunities with the dealers we mentioned, from San Juan to Rincon and some great places to paddle.  Sadly I will report the rum reserves took a serious hit but I am sure they will be back at full strength when you arrive!

PR-Surf Expo-10 002

Please send a comment to this Blog, attention Jim, and tell him why you should be our staff photographer on our next trip, we had too much fun to even take the cameras out!

PR-Surf Expo-10 144
Here is a link to a great post from Kevin O’Brien at Kalavida Sports in BC’s Okanagan. They have a really cool site that explains the basics of SUPing.  They are off to a great start at creating a community for SUP in BC.

Kevin outlines some of the "Best In Show" from last weeks Surf Expo trade show in Orlando Florida, with kudos to Werner Paddles for best use of the new demo pool and most innovative paddle (3-piece Adjustable).  Dan Gavere and Danny Mongno rocked the microphone, while team athletes Nikki Gregg, Kainoa Beaupre were joined by first time paddlers in the demo pool.

Werner’s Adriene Levknecht Raises Awareness During the Kimberly Expedition

Posted 9 weeks ago

Werner Team paddler Adriene Levknecht is widely recognized as one of the most talented female white water boaters in the world.  After a busy 2009, making the US Freestyle Team, competing at the Worlds in Switzerland and countless top extreme race results; she is turning her attention in early 2010 to an expedition to help raise environmental awareness.
AL-Profile Pic
Below Adriene puts the importance of the Kimberly Expedition in her own words.
“During a 6 week journey to the Kimberly Wilderness of Western Australia, me and eight other people will raise awareness to fight the proposed industrialization of this pristine region.  A region which not only is home to such endangered species as the hump back whale, marine turtles, Dugongs and the Golden Back Tree Rat, but also is still home to one of the oldest human cultures in recorded history.  During this trip we will be spending a month on the Fitzroy River, which during flood season is regarded as the highest flow river in the world.  With raft support along the trip we hope lightened boat loads will allow us to truly explore this river and its tributary creeks.
The group is meeting in Melbourne in mid-January and driving cross country to the put in and start of our adventure. Along the way we will be speaking to Aboriginal people, learning of their tricks to live off the land and the ways of their forgotten culture. We will be taking pictures of possibly never before seen Aboriginal paintings and exploring unknown gorges along the way down the river.

“Great, another kayaking vacation!”  Hardly.  Certainly this is an amazing opportunity to put all my kayak training to use on a highly challenging expedition and of course leave the stress of the real world back at home.  However we are going with a mission at hand.  While experiencing a historic cultural few ever get to learn about first hand, we hope to share with others what we learned about them and the wilderness that is so important to not only them but the ecosystem of our planet.  This type of short sighted raping of the wilderness is not just occurring in the Kimberly.  Closer to home regions of Quebec and Ontario are being logged and dammed at alarming rates and let’s not forget about unsubstantiated oil exploration in our own country.  With our time spent in the Kimberly Wilderness and on the Fitzroy we will produce a full length movie of our endeavors and increase avenues to raise money and awareness of the Kimberley.  Along the way showing more and more people the harm that will come of thinking less and less about the values of the pristine regions around us.

I am certainly stoked for the adventurer in me as well; there is so much we are all hoping to get out of this trip personally. Learning about the Aboriginal people, seeing new animals and plants and being able to live off the land.  Not to mention the chance to boat some HUGE water along the way! We have set up a page for our expedition and it will be more put together once the crew all gets in one place but feel free to check it out and see what this is all about.  Also be sure to check in here for updates as well as my other blogs I have been working on.
www.adriene-spankinit.blogspot.com

Thanks Adriene.  Everyone at the Werner Paddles Blog is stoked that you are embarking on this expedition not only as a paddler, but as a tiny little soldier for the environment.

“It's Not Really About Me – It's About the Water.  It’s about you and all the people along the route, and anybody else that cares to listen. “ I think this quote is an amazing way to bring you up to speed on who Jake Stachovak is and what the Portage to Portage Paddling Project is all about.  Over the course of the next year, Jake will paddle from Portage, WI over 5000 miles through the back yards of the some of the highest population bases in the United States, and back to Portage.  Along the way bringing kayaking to the people and showing them the adventures that lie right outside their homes.  We will be following Jake along his journey here at the Werner Paddle’s blog via, www.paddletoportage.com  Here you can take some time to get to know Jake, his mission and his watery route.  Once you got the basics down you can keep up on your own, or at our pace, with his blog that he updates daily.

Here are a few words from Jake’s 12/27 post.
Somehow I thought the state of Mississippi would be a bit warmer. But apparently winter is winter wherever you go. The wind was already pushing ripples on the water before sunrise so I was happy to have an early start to avoid the big blows I’ve seen the last two days on the water. Luck was with me and I actually had a tail wind for a change and made great time on the way into Helena, Arkansas.

Stay warm Jake and enjoy the final push to the end of a great 2009 and the wonders of what 2010 will bring, we’ll keep in touch.

Steep Creek Report From Trafford McCrae in the Virginia Blue Ridge Region

Posted 12 weeks ago

Werner’s regional Team paddler, Trafford McCrae has been on the Virginia Blue Ridge's steep creek scene hard in 2009. He and his crew are making sure they finish up strong.  With the amazing rain year Virginia and the Southeast has been having in 2009 (making up for back to back years of record droughts) the boating has been stellar throughout the region.  Below are some photos and some words from the man himself.

Trafford photo-1

“Last week was good back at home, with a couple of good rains on top of some early season snow melt.  Gordon Dalton and I paddled Paul's Creek Wednesday after work. Unfortunately, we were behind the peak of water on this super-steep micro creek.  It was still worth the hike as you can see from the picture (above) of Gordon running one of the biggest rapids 'Chutes and Ladders'.

Gordon and I didn't have the problem of being behind the water on Sunday afternoon; we scored a double on the VA classic the North Fork of the Tye.

There’s nothing better than a weekend afternoon of creeking, and the NFT delivered with boof on top of boof."

Boy Scout Expo Will Turn 100's Onto Kayaking & Canoeing

Posted 4 months ago

BSA Werner Team Paddler, Boyd Ruppelt checks in here about an upcoming Boy Scouting event that includes kayaking and canoeing.

This weekend, thousands of scouts are expected to take over Shelby Farms Park in Memphis, TN for the BSA Centennial Expo and a weekend of outdoor activities, exposure to new sports & hobbies, and opportunities to earn new scout badges, most of which are expected to work their way through a Kayaking program at Patriot Lake.  There will be demos and instruction in both touring and whitewater kayaking, including the a Kayak BSA course for the Kayak BSA patch.  Shelby Farms is one of the largest urban parks in the country and is building into a model for "the new urban park" with the goal of being the greatest urban park in the country.  I will be there instructing with Jackson Kayak'sSamantha Brunner, among others.   This will not only be a large event for the Boy Scouts, but also a huge growth opportunity for paddlesports in the southeast.

Peace – Boyd Ruppelt

Thanks to you and Samantha for volunteering your time and energy to get kids involved in paddling.

More Feedback on Lumpy Waters & Werner's Danny Mongno

Posted 5 months ago

Danny4 This post comes from a participant at the Lumpy Waters Symposium.  Read on…

Over the weekend we attended the Lumpy Waters Symposium here on the Oregon coast and we wanted to let you know how impressed we were with Danny Mongno and by association Werner paddles.  Danny was coaching a class called " Fear to Fun in the Surf" where he displayed his seemingly boundless energy (does he ever walk anywhere?) and high degree of skill in teaching on land and demo'ing on the water.   His coaching made everyone in the class feel safe and allowed us to progress a great deal in our paddling skills.

Danny2 We're  guessing you already are, but you should be proud to have a man such as Danny representing Werner. Because of  Danny's professionalism throughout the weekend our image of Werner is one of strength, competence, and performance.

We also want to say thank you very much for sending Danny out here for the symposium. At a time when we have read that some symposiums are shrinking with hardly any industry participation, it is great to see Werner supporting our local paddling community. We noticed and appreciated that Werner didn't  send a bunch of merchandise to sell and schwag to throw to the crowd, just a highly competent individual  to help as needed; that will stick in my mind as an example of the type of company that Werner is. We realize that in a tough economy you are examining all expenses, but it's our opinion that sending your reps out to the field are worth more than years of glossy ads in magazines and hope you will continue to allocate your marketing efforts in that direction.

Danny1 Once again, thank you.
Sincerely,
Roger Artigues and Claudine Veran
Portland, Oregon

Thanks Alder Creek Kayak and Canoe. Lumpy Waters Symposium was awesome!

Posted 5 months ago

Werner Paddle's own  Danny Mongno  reporting from this past weekend's Lumpy Water Symposium, presented by Alder Creek Kayak and Canoe.

Cape Kiwanda
“I want to first say thanks to Werner for sending me to the event.  Dan Gavere has things so well covered on the Left Coast I rarely ever get to head out.  Thanks and kudos must go to the owners and staff at Alder Creek.  Their focus on making sure each person was looked after and happy on the water and off was amazing, killer attention to every detail.  I met so many great people on the water and can't wait to come back out and see you all again.

Lumpy-Good 2 The Pacific did a great job of giving us "Lumpy" for sure, Friday and Saturday were full on.  With a solid swell running and high winds creating interesting conditions for say the least, students did an awesome job building confidence and truly taking their skills to new levels.

Lumpy-Good 1
Sunday’s weather was perfect, warming up, no wind and much cleaner surf.  Teams made it to the outside to share waves with the local surfers while others explored the Three Capes region on a multitude of tours and classes.

Cape Kiwanda-surf
I made some great new friends and got to hang out with old ones I don't get to see enough.  If you missed this one you really need to check it out for 2010 and between now and then be sure to stop by Alder Creek to see all the programs they have to offer to get you ready."

If you missed the West Coast showing don't blink.  Danny lands in Asheville on Tuesday, jumps in the truck and drives right to Sea Kayak Georgia for some more rough water coaching.

Werner Paddles at The Battle of the Paddle 2009

Posted 5 months ago

Bop_2009_23
Dan Gavere checks in here with a report on the Battle of the Paddle 2010..

The Battle of the Paddle has become the underground World Championships of Stand Up Paddling and this years event was proof positive.  Over 600 competitors from all over the world came to the sunny shores of So Cal to be involved in what can be called a  landmark event for the sport.

The open class course race consisted of a 5mile course with a beach start and finish.  Werner Paddles team member Nikki Gregg got off to an incredible start outpacing her competition and rounding the first turn marker with a solid 10 second lead over the nearest female competitor.  Making no mistakes and without ever looking back Nikki held the lead throughout the grueling race amidst the other hundreds of competitors, and the churned up sea, she utilized a solid and powerful stroke to claim 1st place in the entire women's open class.

Team Werner Paddles, Kainoa Beaupre (HI), and Dan Gavere (Werner Sales Rep) competing in the elite class against some of the best in the sport had respectable finishes with a 13th and 26th in the class. (They even found themselves paddling side by side for one complete lap.)  Surfing prowess and endurance were the most important factors in this 6 mile race that required competitors to complete 4 laps around a challenging course that wove in and out of the surf and required a 50 yard beach run on each lap.

Grueling is an understatement for this particular course; broken boards, paddles, chins and feelings could be heard throughout the race as several competitors made contact with each other.  The building surf and low tide conditions exposed the racers to head high waves, shallow waters and challenging turns on every mark making for an exciting SUP race.  Werner paddles could be spotted everywhere in the hands of competitors and the Nitro is steadily proving itself to be the paddle of choice for racing.  All 3 team members mentioned above used Werner Nitro paddles for the race, and can attest to their performance, strength, and reliability.

Werner Paddles knows that the future of paddling depends on the youth of today.  So here is some info about a program to get more kids off the couch and reconnecting with the water and land.

In an effort to encourage tweens (ages 8-12) to spend more time in nature, the U.S. Forest Service is joining the Ad Council today to launch an interactive photo/art sweepstakes that will engage families in experiencing nature first hand. As an extension of their "Re-Connecting Kids with Nature", the photo sweepstakes encourages tweens to head into the forest or river, explore and find their "other you.  Learn more about the sweepstakes here.

Ben Kinsella packs up his Werners, and the World Class kids, to head to Peru.

Posted 5 months ago

We are proud to have two top teachers and coaches paddling Werner Paddles at the World Class Kayak Academy, Josh Bechtel and Head Coach Ben Kinsella.  As they pack up and get ready for a semester in Peru, let's let Ben give us some more beta on the kids, the program and their big travel plans.

Ben profile pic

” I might be biased, but World Class is the best kayak school in the world."  (There are many amazing programs out there in the US and Internationally, but we will back Ben up and will say that World Class without a doubt has a stellar reputation among the best schools.) "The combination of faculty, students, curriculum, and epic paddling destinations makes for an incredible atmosphere for young adults to grow and learn.

Yough kids

As an instructor/teacher the challenges vary from day to day and keep you on your toes.  There isn't a dull moment… and that's how we like it!  During our fall semester this year we are going to Peru, an unprecedented destination for a kayak academy.  The school will embark on many whitewater endeavors culminating with 2-3 multi-day self-support trips.

Max's spot

The experience these students will gain on the water is truly amazing, not to mention the cultural and technical education they will receive on a daily basis.  There is no better way to prepare these flourishing minds for the real world than to introduce them into new challenges in a foreign country.  They will learn history on the steps of Machu Pichu, practice spanish in the streets of Cusco, and calculate the intertia of a kayak traveling down the Rio Colca.

Werner casey

As the Head Coach of this amazing group I feel truly honored to be a part of this historic trip! With my Werner paddle in hand I will guide the young athletes down some of the most pristine and unexplored whitewater in the world.  Peru is going to be the trip of a lifetime for these students, and I can't wait to be a part of it.  Journeying across a new continent, kayaks in tow is an amazing experience that will change the lives of my athletes.

Here’s to the never ending pursuit of knowledge, adventure, and the whitewater dream!"

Thanks for a great report Ben, we appreciate your time and the photos, letting folks learn more about the World Class Academy.   I can attest, from the time I have spent with their graduates, the program works.  The way teachers like Josh and Ben can slow these kids down, and set up classrooms while they are on the road exploring these amazing paddling destinations, is just a total compliment to how good the staff is.  Ben was also gracious enought to give Werner Paddles a really great compliment, thanks we appreciate it.  “Paddling over 300 days a year I need the best gear, and with Werner in my hands I'm confident in tackling the trials of a professional teacher/coach. "

Werner, Canadian Team Paddler, Matt Hamilton, finally reporting from Garb!

Posted 6 months ago

After 2 years of waiting… Garb!

Canadian Team member Matt Hamilton has been busy as of late to say the least.  Working part time in the paddle sports industry, full time on the Ottawa River and posing as a full time student keeps him scrambling to find river time.  However, this past Sunday he got the goods, let Matt explain.

Firstpaddleof the year 001

"Fall has arrived here on the Ottawa River.  It is a time when I’m sad to see friends depart from a summer of fun on the river, but ecstatic that the lines ups are gone!   This past weekend was one to remember.  The weather was abnormally mild and the water was still very warm.  I headed to the city early Saturday morning for a class, and was devastated when I found out the  river had dropped to Garb levels, and I was stuck in school.

IMG_7905[1]

I woke up Sunday morning to find out the river was still holding at a solid level .  A few phone calls later I had a photographer, and some paddling buddies.

IMG_7965[1]

We arrived at the wave to find a good size group with huge grins on their faces!  Unfortunate for my good buddy, and Ottawa River local, Billy Harris got stuck on a cute canoe trip all weekend!  Canadian paddlers are stoked, with unusually high rain levels driving up CFS on the river the past few years, this is the first time in two years that Garb made its appearance.

IMG_7966[1]

It’s been 2 long years in the waiting, and it was everything I remembered!   Big, foamy and fun!"

Thanks for a great report Matt.

Jan from T.I. Adventures gives the fishing report, "Their crushing salmon!"

Posted 6 months ago

Jan reported to us on the Werner blog earlier this season, letting us know about the stand up paddle wave he and his staff is generating in his shop,  T.I. Adventures, home town of Clayton NY. (Upsate NY in the Thousand Island Region.)  Last night he now got me the report from local kayak fisherman Bill Taddeo and his buddies that they were "crushing" salmon.

HPIM0390

Now as we all know, and one of my favorite authors Linda Greenlaw confirms, all fisherman are liars.  However, with these amazing shots provided, we can't say that about Bill and his friends…well at least not this time.

HPIM0395

I can tell you where they are cathcing them, but I am sure that would lead to me ending up in small pieces at the end of the hook.  I think  your best bet, if you are interested in catching some big NY State salmon from a kayak, is to drop Jan a line jan@tiadventures.com and see if he'll give you the skinny.  Thanks for the report Jan and thanks Bill for the great pictures of your Werner Paddles, I mean salmon.

The Surf Line Up. What's going on in Danny at Werner Paddles head?

Posted 6 months ago

I’m beat and when your beat you always think crazier things than you usually do.  This is certainly the busiest time for paddle sports reps., which means when you are living in a truck in New England for a few weeks, during swell season, you are surfing at sunrise and sunset to still get gobs of work done during the day.

IMG_0012[1]

So yesterday I drag myself out of the truck at 6:00am, after two sessions the prior day, and see what the Atlantic is spinning.  So as I paddle out somewhere in Rhode Island in the Capella 161, wrong swell direction for the stand up board,  I get to thinking…the experience of wave riding and hanging in the line up can be a lot like eating.  So hear me out.  For some folks paddling out is like the family BBQ, a social event.  They hang around around, chat, laugh with friends, grab a burger(wave) then hang out for awhile longer till they are hungry again.  Just soaking it all in.  For some it is like they're a fish, keep putting food in that bowl and they'll eat till they die.  It's like a marathon or something, they are out there all day?  Then there is the "Fine Dining" crowd.  This bunch will sit outside the entire session, letting one good wave after another go by just waiting for "the one."  Like trying to make sure the chicken matches the wine selection just perfectly before they will eat.

Sickriwave[1]

For me, surfing waves has always been like buffet style eating.  You get in there and you check out the scene, what's going to get eaten in what order and who's going to be looking to cut you in line as you get to the crab legs. Once you got that sorted it's game on, get as much in as you can as quick as you can, I mean I got things to do after this.  Then of course, once you are stuffed, there is the desert table.  You got to find the strength to walk out with that ice cream cone and surfing is the same way. You got to wait it out for the gem wave, sitting out there with the "Fine Diners" waiting for that one bomb to take to the beach.

Danny Mongno. 3

No matter how you eat, and who knows you may have your own style I didn't cover, like a good meal a killer session will always leave you feeling full.  But instead of your gut it's your soul that just seems ready to explode.

Team Max's and their Werner Paddles-racing to raise money for Believe in Tomorrow

Posted 6 months ago

Shoving off today is team Max's of, Max’s Tap House in Baltimore MD, as they race against Team Nacho Mamma's for bragging rights in Fells Point but more importantly to raise money for their charity, Believe in Tomorrow.  Two teams of three, Team Max's- Ron Furman, Jason Mislan and Jessica Welsh, Team Mamma's-Scunny McCusker, Delaware Dave and Sean Leahy, will race through the high seas of the Potomac, Chesapeake and Baltimore Harbor. Each man – and one woman – pledge to navigate individual kayaks through 165+ miles of open water to raise money in support of Believe In Tomorrow National Children's Foundation.   Believe In Tomorrow provides exceptional hospital and respite housing services to critically ill children and their families. Sticking the belief that keeping families together during a child’s medical crisis, and that the gentle cadence of normal family life has a powerful influence on the healing process.  Dave from Annapolis Canoe and Kayak

Springriverlogo07sm[1]

came to us at the begining of the Summer and said he was sponsoring the event and asked if Werner would supply paddles in the effort to raise money.  "It is hard at times for us," explains Werner Paddles Field Marketer Danny Mongno, "We get approached by so many people to help with events and fund raisers."  In this event, with Annapolis Canoe and Kayak on board, Werner followed and as a part of the sponsorship sent Danny as an instructor to work with the teams on some forward stroke skills for their long journey.  "Once you get to see the people involved, it makes all the difference.  I do not doubt for a second that team Max's wants to pound Scully and Mamma's into the Bay, but there was so much more to it than that.  They are all really behind helping the kids and that was no more evident than in the time I spent with Team Max's captian, and bar owner, Ron Furman."

You can log link to the web site's of Believe in Tomorrow, Max's or Nacho Mamma's from this blog if you would like to make a donation to either team and the cause.  If not, simply join the Dave and the staff at Annapolis Canoe and Kayak and the Werner family as we wish both teams lots of luck.  Check in end of the week for a race report.

Werner team paddler, Matt Young, back in the saddle for NY fall whitewater.

Posted 6 months ago

Just back from his white water expedition to Norway, see his post on Werner Paddles blog, team paddler Matt Young is back in upstate NY and has hit the ground running, or water paddling?

Beaver 007-2 Check out his quick report as he and Bill Frazer got the goods this past weekend.

“Summers in Northern NY are certainly anything but long. Fall begins on Labor Day up here, Yes that's right, while many down staters are soaking up sun at the beach we are starting to experience the beauty of fall on Labor weekend.  The changing of the seasons to Fall is always marked by the dam releases on the Taylorville, Moshier and Eagle sections of the Beaver River and Raquette River over the holiday weekend.

Beaver 013-2 Along with Bill and myself, it seemed like just about every other whitewater boater in the northeast thourougly enjoyed all the Beaver and Raquette had to offer. Labor Day weekend in New York is certainly he place to be."

Beaver 034-1 Thanks Matt, we appreciate the trip report.

Sea Kayak Georgia's Skills Symposium. BCU, Surf and so much more.

Posted 6 months ago

BCU 2

Start planning now as Werner Paddles is proud to again support Sea Kayak Georgia's 2009 Skills Symposium and BCU Week, this coming October 21st-25th.  As I travel the country teaching and meeting people at events I always find myself explaining that, "I at not on comission from Marsha and Ronnie," owners of one the nations premiere paddling instructional institutions.  It is just that I invite everyone to Tybee Island because it is such an amazing learning enviornment.  Located about 30 minutes from one of the nations greatest cities, Savannah, GA, Tybee Island offers paddlers of all ability levels a water way that is not only a comfortable learning enviornment, but a great starting point for multi day trips.  Although having an element that caters to the advanced paddler, the event offers something for everyone. From paddlers growing with the BCU progam as well as beginner to intermediate courses, even in disciplines like canoe and stand up paddling.  It is a well know fact though that the warm water surfing enviornment of the famous "Triangle" draws paddlers from all over the world to SKG each October.  Few other places offer you n enviornment where you can you put your dry suit away and increase your comfort level, from beginner to advanced ocean conditions, under the watchful eye of some of the world's best coaches.

BCU 1

BCU 3

Werner Paddles is proud to present the Most Improved Paddler Award each year.  All the coaches vote at the end of the week the "Chosen One" is the paddler who they felt grew the most in their skills over the course of the event.  That paddler walks away with a free custom fitting for their perfect Werner Paddle.

BCU 5

Be sure to check out the schedule of classes and then give Marsha, Ronnie or Regan a call at the shop to set up the program of coaches and classes that will help you get the most out of your trip to Georgia.  On behalf of all the Werner Paddle coaches that will be in attendance, we look forward to seeing you.  (Words by Danny Mongno, who will be teaching at the event.  Photos by owner/instructors Marsha, Ronnie and the Sea Kayak Georgia staff.)

In his first year with Werner Paddles, Kelsey Thompson from Team Canada has had a lot to sort out, losing his best friend earlier this season in a kayaking accident.  He is taking day by day but is certainly focused and ready for this event.  Check out his blog, Atlantic Kayaker and see how his training is going and check out how huge this kid is going with his sure to be event winning Air Screws.  There are few harder workers or nicer people I have worked with this year for sure, I hope you'll join us in pulling for him to bring home the Gold.

Nicole Mansfield, represents the female's perspective at Demshitz

Posted 6 months ago

We have been hearing plenty lately from Demshitz, as Jared and Dave have been on the road spreading the love as they see the country and paddle it's rivers.  Today we are stoked to have our first post from the loan female on the tour, Nicole Mansfield.  A hugely talented boater she has been running the goods and throwing down at all the play spots for the past two seasons whenever the van pulls over.

Head On a recent trip home to Upstate NY to visit family, travelling with Dave Fusilli, Nicole found out there was alot more boating to be found than she had ever remembered.  Read along as she reports.

“Most times when I return home to visit my family in Buffalo, NY I just stash my kayaks in the backyard and figure they will sit there unused for a couple of weeks.  Because I never knew whitewater kayaking existed as a sport while I lived there, I assumed that there was no whitewater in the area other than the obvious Niagara Falls

While Western NYmay not be the next mecca of whitewater paddling, there certainly are multiple opportunities to paddle some fun stuff even at the end of August without any significant rainfall.  Below are some pictures from the whitewater adventures we found within an hour of Buffalo, NY."

Surf"Right outside of Rochester, NY is Lock 32 Whitewater Park in Pittsford, NY. is a small diversion from the Erie Canal, the whitewater park is impressive because it is fun and shows what can be made with just a little bit of water and not much gradient. Check out the Genesee Waterways website.  Here are some shots of the last feature on the run, clearly the best play spot."

Nicole-surf   Nicole-Loop

“The interesting thing about this creek, with the next more sizable drop, is that about 50 yards before the waterfall, the entire creek flows below the Erie Canal.  Check out these pics, the Canal is actually raised up and over the creek."

South Georgia Expedition Confirmed For January 2010

Posted 7 months ago

Hayley.shepard Just caught up with Hailey Shephard about her expedition to South Georgia. Werner is proud to be supporting Hailey's efforts. Here is an excerpt from her blog….

To ensure the South Georgia Expedition takes place, I have recently secured a bank loan to go towards the cost for the Mandatory support vessel required by British Law, just in case I am not successful in gaining sufficient sponsorship.

The South Georgia 'Kayaking to Save the Albatross' Expedition is happening this coming January!

The job I have right now is perfect. I spend up to 7 hours a day kayaking many miles of our gorgeous BC coastline, talking to paddlers along the way. My job is to monitor kayak movements around the resident killer whales who spend the summer months feasting on salmon which are migrating up rivers where they were born a number of years ago. I offer interpretive talks about the whales and the region aswell I educate people on the best way to view the killer whales without interfering with their daily routine and lives.

I am based in Alert Bay which is where I live, rather unique and refreshing actually working from my home.

I will continue to update my blog, keeping you posted as the South Georgia Expedition departure draws near.

It’s all training and preparing from here! Cheers and thanks for your interest

There is a great quote from Darren Bush that gets to the core of this sports popularity…“It’s simple and accessible – all you need is a paddle and a board.” The simplicity of the sport is key to attracting even more participants.

Paddle to Seattle: Journey through the Inside Passage Gains More Attention

Posted 7 months ago

POSTER Paddle to Seattle: Journey through the Inside Passage is a feature documentary chronicling the progress of two intrepid adventurers paddling handmade wooden Pygmy kayaks (& of course using Werner Paddles) from Alaska to Seattle.

PTS.1 The Inside Passage encompasses an enormous chain of islands while maintaining North America’s only rainforest 1,300-miles from Alaska to Northern Washington.   Encounters with grizzly bears are not uncommon.  The rain can fall for weeks uninterrupted.  Rich biodiversity makes room for surreal encounters with unexpected marine life.   The film presents interviews from peoples of the region, and a sense of humor provides genuine insights into the experience of two adventurers.

PTS.2 J.J and Josh have been gaining a lot of attention recently for their trip and documentary.  They are featured in this month's Canoe & Kayak Magazine and Paddler Magazine did an online article.  You can check out a short video clip about the project. The guys have been invited to the Port Towsend Film Festival which is taking place over the same weekend as the West Coast Sea Kayak Symposium

Check out the films premier at the Port Townsend Film Festival (Sat. Sept. 26th -3:30pm at the Uptown Cinema). "The film has screened a handful of times in focus groups across the country. Each time, we were taking the editorial critiques from the viewers back to the edit room to refine our film. Ultimately it has been our hope to make the story as seamless as possible. Thanks to the thoughtful input of preliminary viewers; we have a strong film to present. It feels good to be premiering the finished product at Port Townsend. We had the good fortune of passing through on our way to Seattle; I guess you could say it's a bit of a homecoming," says J.J..

On Friday at WCSKS they will hold a 1-hour slideshow describing the expedition with never-before-seen-footage (bloopers, outtakes, and extra scenes). To learn more about J.J. and Josh check out their site and be sure to check out the film – great footage and two fun guys!

Kayak Session #31: Tyler Bradt Interview

Posted 7 months ago

KS_31 Just back from the mail box and found the newest Kayak Session (#31).  This issue is packed full of great content, as always.

There is an interview with Tyler Bradt who most recently made news with his world record waterfall decent of Palouse Falls on April 21, 2009.  The 186 drop has made headlines and stirred controversy in the paddling community. Here is a link to an interview KS did on line with Tyler following the new record. He also attracted a great deal of mainstream media including FOX News

If you don't subscribe to Kayak Session – you should.  The best quality whitewater paddling magazine bar none.

I would encourage people to read this interview and then comment about Tyler's impact on the sport.

Werner Paddles Company Picnic

Posted 7 months ago

Werner.picnic.1 Keith Krueger, Werner Paddles Production Manager, checks in here about a little company get together we had recently.  (All photos by Keith Kueger)

Werner.picnic.sup We had the company picnic this past Saturday.  We missed all of you working remotely. We set up at Lake Tye in Monroe.  We fired up the BBQ and cooked burgers, hot dogs and sausages.

Werner.picnic.erich One of the Werner Paddles company picnic traditions is to bring a selection of kayaks and paddles for the employees and their families to try.  We brought 13 kayaks, 2 stand up boards and a pile of paddles this year.  They were all out on the water most of the day.  The stand up boards were a huge hit.

Werner.picnic Andy Bridge (Director or R&D) and Erich Furrer spent the day down by the water giving people pointers and taking some of the younger kids for rides.  There were many people who got in a kayak or on a stand up board for the first time.

Werner.SR.SUP Werner Sr. and Jr. both attended.  Werner Sr. at 82 years old decided he wanted to give the stand up board a go.  He wiped out twice, but got up both times to try again.

We have a great group of people here.  It was nice to leave work behind for a day and have some fun together.

Home grown boy Danny Mongno, now representing Werner Paddles, will be working with local shops on Long Island, NY all weekend long, getting people fired up on stand up paddling.

Head shot-Hat

From beginners looking to try the sport out for the first time to people trying to learn some tips towards more efficient paddling, there will be something for everyone.  Werner has been hand crafting the world's finest kayak paddles, here in the USA, for over 40 years.  Stand up is new for us in the past 3 years, but our paddles are quickly becoming the standard in quality and performance.  Lead by our stand up paddle pro, Dan Gavere, Mette Bergvall, Jim Miller and Danny are out in the field getting people more excited about this new sport.  It's gaining popularity not only for it's fun riding waves but its new perspective on touring and amazing fitness potential.  You can join Danny at Main Beach Surf and Sport in Wainscott, on Friday from 4-8.  Sunset Surf Shack in Montauk on Saturday.  Sunday from 12-4 Danny will be at the Peconic Paddler in Riverhead.  Check in with the shops for more information on these events.  Can't make it out for these times, these shops not only stock stand up paddle boards and Werner Paddles, but can educate you on the sport and get you on the water any day of the week, just call for an appointment.  You can also find Werner Paddles on Long Island at, Bunger Surf Shop in Babylon, Empire Kayaks in Island Park, Weekend Warriors in Sag Harbor and Wind Surfing Hamptons in South Hampton.  Hope to see you this weekend, "standing on water."

Jimmy Grossman won his Final in Master’s IC with Wayne Waddington taking fourth in his Grand Master’s IC final.  Russ Buskirk and Tom May took 3rd and 4th. I was the second to last heat to go.  I ended up 4th in finals!  This was my third time making it to finals in the Worlds.  I cannot even express how fun it is to surf big waves.  Naomi James surfed her way to a World Title during our heat!  The level of competition was outstanding and the waves were great. As I surfed in after the buzzer the Basques greeted me on the beach with our flag (my family is Basque) and cheers.   The Basques had great Individual finals with Ainhoa Tolosa taking Women’s  IC and Urko Otxoa with Men’s title in IC and Edu Etxeberria in second in HP.  Luis, who I met at the 05 Worlds, honored the Basques by capturing the World Title in both HP and IC Grand Masters!

Devon.EduBasque With the delay in competition I was not able to make it home on Saturday.  I had a rushed flight on Monday as there were no seats left on Sunday, were I left customs without my kayaks as not to miss the last flight home to Idaho.  Unfortunately, my father was diagnosed with Kidney cancer, which spread, to his optic nerve the day I was in semi-finals.  Sometimes the highs and lows in life have bad timing.

I arrived home 27 hours later to Idaho.  The sound of the river and the smell of the forest welcomed me home.  My new Jackson Star was waiting for me in my front room.  I cannot wait to surf on Cat’s Paw on the Salmon.  Below are links to more photos and results.  Many thanks to all of you who supported me.  I could not have done it without you all!    BEST OF LUCK TO TEAM USA AND ALL JK ATHLETES IN THE FREESTYLE WORLDS IN THUN!  Devon

Werner Paddle's Danny Mongno, Stand up paddling with Cinnamon Rainbows

Posted 7 months ago

The stand up paddling scene is taking off in the North East and one of the hot spots is Cinnamon Rainbows Surf Shop in Hampton, NH.

Bus[1] The crystal clear water and rocky shoreline makes for some killer paddling and yesterday's gentle winds and sunny skies made for a glassy ocean with just a mild pulse of a swell running under my feet.  Over the rocks it was awesome to see the sea life, including a huge stripe bass I saw swim right under me.  If stand up paddling is new to you it needs to be on your short list of things to try this summer.  The perspective from touring standing up combined with the amazing work out you get is awesome, plus it is so easy to do for anybody.  Don't believe me?  Check out Cinnamon Rainbows stand up demo every Tuesday and Thursday from 6-8pm, weather permitting.  The staff is quick to help people of any ability get the hang of it on super stable boards and allow you to give it a whirl in a protected clear water cove.  Once you get the hang of it you are going to be dying to catch some waves and the beauty of stand up paddle surfing is you can avoid the crowds, since any wave is super fun to surf on.  As dusk turned to dark and I rode my last perfect little wave of the night, I looked down the beach to see the pack of surfers waiting it out to get their wave.  I looked around my little patch of ocean and saw nobody else out…not even that bass?  Hope you make it down to the shop next week to give it a whirl yourself, don't live near Hampton, NH?  Check out our dealer locator and look for the stand up paddle icon,

Stand_up[1]

then call to set up a demo.  Happy SUP to you.

Mountain Man Outdoor's, Chris Morelli, blogs about NY's Bottom Moose.

Posted 7 months ago

Located in NY's Adirondack Park, the Moose River is a classic of North East boating.  Whether you are checking out the placid head waters as you paddle into outdoor outfitter, Mountain Man Outdoor's, Adirondack Center in Old Forge, or pushing your personal white water skills from class 2 to class 5, the Moose has something for every paddler and their family.  Today's episode finds Misty Mountain Adventures, Liane O'Hara and Rob Yager, Werner Paddle's Danny Mongno and myself getting a sweet summer time, sunset run on the class 5 Bottom Moose.

P7130084 Check out a short video of some of the kayak and shredding action.  Without American White Water's hard work the Moose River would have been lost for boaters.  Be sure to mark October 16th-18th on your calendar for this year's Bottom Moose release and epic Moose Fest.  Come up and hang with your buddies, drop some gradient and help raise money for AW.

Sea Kayak Georgia's Skills Symposium. BCU, Surf and so much more.

Posted 7 months ago

Touring Technique: As conditions get bigger get below the deck.

Posted 7 months ago

This past weekend at the 25th annual Grand Marais Sea Kayak Symposium, mother nature was serving up some humble pie out on Lake Superior.  With stong on shore winds swells of 4-5 foot turned into great surf as it slammed into the small town beaches of Grand Marais, Michgan.

Good-1 If there is one thing I love about paddling it is playing in the surf, but not because of the "rush."  Although it is of course fun, for me it is the challenge of controlling a kayak in these conditions and testing my skills that gets me excited to paddle out again and again as things get rolling.  Core skills like torso rotation and edge control become even more important as waves wash over your bow and stern and essentially try and lock your kayak in place.  It is here that we start today's short lesson, because if we do not "get below the deck" with our paddling, we will never tranisition all the work our upper body is doing into the water efficiently.

Good-2 Have you ever paddled past a dock, a pier or a water front walk way and some maniac yells down at you from above, "HEY!  WHERE ARE YOUR LEGS IN THAT THING!!"  Well…have you given that much thought lately?  By pushing against our footrests with our feet, when going forward, and with our butt into our seat and back band, when going backwards, we essentially lock our lower body into place.  This gives us higher confidence, through more stability, but also allows us to generate more torque as we rotate our upper torso and move the paddle through the water.

Good-5 Practice this first on placid water.

1-Sit up straight in your kayak and while keeping you shoulders square, reach your right arm and index finger out as far as you can, imagine you are trying to grab your bow toggle handle.  With your finger extended, touch the deck of your boat and note how far you reached.

2-Now, same excersise except, with your arm and finger stretched out, rotate your right shoulder forward, turining your torso, eyes forward!  Now lower the finger to the deck, look how much longer your reach just got!

3-Last step.  Arm extended, right shoulder rotated, reach hard without leaning your head forward!  Remember sit up straight.  NOW, move your right butt forward in your seat slightly, check how far you can reach.

Each step should gain you a longer reach with your finger, or "Catch" with your paddle.  However that last step, moving the butt should have significantly increased the pressure on your right foot rest.  IMAGINE how much more torque you will now create as you drive off that footrest with your feet as you rotate your torso and move the paddle through the water, across the morning glass or up and over that wave.

GM-2009 036 Try this same excersize only in reverse to feel the power of driving your butt into the seat and back band.  Now pratcice your basic strokes, like sweeps and forward and reverse strokes with your new thinking of, "Getting below the deck," with your paddling.  Practice on flatwater and as you move into more advanced conditions this will start to just become second nature for you and allow you to move your boat with a higher level of ease.  This is just a short intro to more efficient paddling, be sure to check out our Events Page for up and coming symposiums to work with some of our amazing instructors on the water or check out Go Paddling to find a Werner Paddles shop or Outfitter offering classes in your area.  Too busy to get out?  Sorry to hear that.  Check out our short Forward Stroke and sweep stroke videos on Werner TV for an introduction to this line of thinking.  Ready to graduate? Check out Team Paddler Ben Lawry's DVD on the Forward Stroke. We always suggest getting proper training and instruction before any level of paddling and especially as you increase the the difficulty of water you explore.  Because even at expert levels you are always one mistake away from this!

GM-2009 067 Words by Werner Paddles kayak instructor Danny Mongno and photos by Down Wind Sport's, Bill Thompson.  Be sure to keep an eye on Bill and the gang at Down Wind as they prepare to take the Symposium at Grand Marais to new heights in July of 2010.

Battery-NYC I know, I know…no religion no politics.  But the day in this photo, it was 3 to 4 foot swell and 25 knots when we paddled out to the Statue of Liberty!  This candidate is legit!  Over the years Craig has touched the lives of so many people working for Werner Paddles, fitting people with the perfect paddle and laughing and smiling both on the water and off with paddlers in the North East and Mid Atlantic.  We wish the Craig the best as he runs for Bookhaven Town Council out on Long Island, NY.

Werner Paddler, Hailey Thompson Checks In From The Road

Posted 8 months ago

Hailey_0398 Werner Team Member, Hailey Thompson checks in with us.  She is living the dream!

The Junior Olympics were incredible! I spent my first three days at the Gull River, in Minden, Ontario, the site of the 1977 Whitewater World Championships, where we competed in Slalom and boater-x events.

From there, we moved on to Madawaska Kanu Center, where we had more slalom events. Then to the Ottawa River. Wow…I can't say that I've ever paddled a river that I liked more. Huge drops and wave trains, after peaceful looking lakes, and North woods that reminded me of home! We had a freestyle there, and spent an entire day playing on big waves and holes.

Our last couple of days were spent in the city of Ottawa…we saw Parliament, walked across the bridge to Quebec for little culture-shock (I need to work on my French!), and I raced in the final Junior Olympic Slalom at the Pumphouse.

It was such an amazing event, and I was lucky enough to come back to the States laden with 12 Junior Olympic medals, winning the Junior Olympics Overall Award for my 3rd year in a row…I feel incredibly blessed.

From Canada, I traveled south to West Virginia, where I spent a week and a half with family and friends, training Slalom at the ASCI artificial Whitewater Course, paddling the Upper Yough, Bouldering, and Hiking. It was a great stretch of time, and West Virginia was gorgeous as always, but I am very pleased to be back in Wisconsin.

I’ll be home for the next three weeks, preparing for the World Championships, catching up on chores and school work, and all of that good stuff, as well as competeing in the Open Canoe Nationals in Wausau, July 31-August 2.

I’m incredibly excited for the opportunity of competeing in Pre-Worlds, in Tacen, Slovenia, and World Championships, in La Seu D' Urgell, Spain. It will be the largest international event I have ever competed in, and it will be amazing to paddle with some of the world's most talented boaters.

Beau Whitehead on SUPing in the PNW

Posted 8 months ago

Sup.pnw Here is a post from Werner's friend Beau Whitehead on SUPing in the Pacific Northwest…

SUPing in Puget Sound can mean different things; cruising flat water, surfing boat and freighter wakes or surfing the rare swell-driven wave.  There are so few surf spots inside Puget Sound that surfers tend to be very protective of them… but if you draw a straight line down the Strait of Juan de Fuca and follow a NW swell direction, you can pretty much tell where the waves might end up.

Sup.pnw1 SUPing is not as cold as regular surfing, since you are out of the water more. You can wear a much thinner wet suit than you would regular surfing.  And standing up on a SUP board allows you to see down into the water and see fish and jellyfish (and sharp rocks) lurking just below you.  SUPing is probably the coolest thing to happen to northwest water sports in decades!

Werner Paddles Listens to Dealers: New 2010 “Go to Dealer” Strategy

Posted 8 months ago

Werner Paddles has created their most flexible “go to dealer” strategy to date.
Werner has a three pronged strategy for reaching out to their dealers with 2010 pre-season program information.  They will host a web based conference call, create a DVD and have their dedicated rep force visit with dealers in person; all in an effort to communicate the new 2010 product, programs and support.

“In light of our decision not to attend Summer Outdoor Retailer, we thought about how best to serve our dealers.  We want dealers to have access to all of the same information they would receive at a sit down meeting with us, in an environment and time frame that meets their needs,” says Jim Miller, Werner Paddles Marketing Manager.

Werner will deliver a series of web based conferences for their US and Canadian Dealers the week of July 13, 2009. The conference will cover the 2010 product line; including additions and changes, program, pricing, marketing and rep support. For those dealers who can not attend one of the scheduled “live” conferences, Werner will archive the presentations on their Dealer Resource web site.
Additionally, Werner will mail a DVD with their pre-season program covering much of the same material. This will ship the week of July 20th, 2009.

“We are making a concerted effort for our reps to hit the road and visit dealers in person.  We are trying to be sensitive to the message that was delivered to us from our dealers. They told us; ‘We want more information, in a more flexible format and in a more flexible time frame,’  Our strategy to reach our dealers with our 2010 information meets these needs,’ says Miller.

Werner Paddles is the leading manufacturer of high quality kayak, canoe, and stand up paddles, operating near the banks of the Skykomish River in Sultan, WA. For more information call 800.275.3311 or visit us at www.wernerpaddles.com

Family SUPing Over the Fourth of July

Posted 8 months ago

Wren

I went paddling with my to kids over the weekend at Elk Lake which is in the Cascade Range of Oregon.  We set our picnic lunch up next to the Elk Lake Lodge.  It is a very low key affair with a restaurant, general store and marina.

Stand Up Paddling is a great activity for the whole family.  The kids would play in the sand, swim out to the floating dock, and paddle the stand up board.  They had a great time and could make the board go where they wanted with just a few minutes of practice.

There were about half a dozen other SUP'ers and twice again as many kayak and canoe paddlers. The lodge rents all of these crafts so if you get to beautiful Bend Oregon be sure to check out all of the beautiful high mountain lakes.

Payette River Experience

Posted 8 months ago

Image Werner Athlete, Devon Barker checks in from Idaho…

Idaho had two white water festivals this month.  The first was the Payette Boise Revival (PBR) (which had great sposnorship from Idaho River Sports and NRS) and the second was the Payette River Experience.  Both events had down river races, slalom, and freestyle contests.   The organizers have been working with the dam operator of the Bladder Dam.  3 out of the 5 days the epic wave was in.  The good news is that if the river is between 8 and 15 K the dam operator is able to dial in the wave.  For the second event the water dropped below 8K and there was not enough pressure to Image-1431718-72896164-2-Thumbnail_0_d03b646a498b2fbd2b0478fe00bf3332_1 hold the bladder dam down to make the crease for the wave.  We hope to hold more events in Idaho on this great wave now that we know the flows that are needed to make it work.
The highlight was using my new carbon Twist paddle from Werner with my new Dynamic Duo.  Ethan and I surfed it but Jimmy Grossman and his 7-year-old son Buey stole the show by entering the freestyle event in the Duo.  They were great!

Werner Athlete, Dave Collins Makes His Move With SUP Jousting

Posted 8 months ago

JOUSTING SHOT Here is a post from Dave Collins from his recent trip to Canada…

I competed this last weekend in the first ever Qualicum Beach SUP Race sponsored by Island Longboards of Qualicum Beach on Vancouver Island, B.C..  My Werner Nitro helped propel me to a second-place finish in the approximately one-mile race.  But I put my Nitro away when it came to the next and final event: paddle jousting, a medieval twist to this booming sport.  The object: knock your opponent off his or her board before he or she knocks you off of yours.

Two paddles with foam taped around the grip were provided.  This was a co-ed event and I was paired up to duel with a local “lady” on my second round.  I had all intentions of taking it easy on her, which was my first mistake.  She came at me from a kneeling position, whacked me across the head and sent me face first into the soup before I had time to be nice.  I walked away from the duel stunned and humiliated and would have been eliminated had she not later apologized for letting her competitive spirit get the best of her, and renounced her victory.

That opened the window for me into the finals where I was pitted against a burly local who proved extremely tough to oust from his board.  We put on a good show with several sketchy recoveries on each of our part.  Being on the heavier side of the scale for racing (200 lbs.), I often feel at a disadvantage because of my weight, but not the case in paddle jousting where some extra mass is beneficial.  The event combines balance with strategically creative paddle moves.  I´m not sure if paddle jousting will showcase at other SUP events, but it was a clever way to wrap up this inaugural event, drawing in new spectators who might otherwise have kept on walking by.  Coverage of the whole event, which will be an annual affair, can be found at here.

Werner's Dan Gavere: Paddle Long, Paddle Hard

Posted 8 months ago

Sc.crossing Ever think about doing a long paddle on your SUP board?  Perhaps three hours.  What an awesome workout.  How about racing your SUP board? The sense of competition and adrenaline that comes with it.  Now lets combine the two.  There are only a hand-full of athletes who can go hard for five and a half hours. That is exactly what happened this last weekend as a group of paddlebaorders and SUP'ers raced for 28 miles across Monetery Bay. Werner Paddles, Dan Gavere, finished in third place overall and was the first stand up paddler across the line with a time of 5:30:42.

The event was hosted by the Ghostryders Waterman Club, which plans to donate proceeds to local Junior Guard programs. To  make things a little more exciting there was a shark sighting by one of the safety boats.  To read more check out  the Santa Cruz Sentinel. Werner Ambassador Brian Good Brings His Infectious Smile To The Potomac

Posted 8 months ago

Brian Good packed up his new born son Fletcher, his girlfiend (paddler, Jessie Rice) and headed North out of Asheville.  The community was sad to see him go.  After all, there are few people you meet with a more fun loving attitude for paddling and life in general as B Good. A native of the white water mecca, Fayettville, WV; he started his paddling career when he took his smile and non stop comedy routine to the back of a raft, keeping people in stitches as he guided down the New and Gauley Rivers.

B-Good 004 His fun going way landed him opportunities to guide rafts and work with kids in Fiji as well as guide all over the West coast.  Like so many raft guides, the alure of kayaking, drew Brian into a hard boat and life as a video kayaker.  His long time relationship as a paddler for Pyranha Kayaks and Werner Paddles was developed as he hit the white water kayaking scene hard, running the steep creeks and getting new paddlers stoked on the sport.

As he rolled out of Asheville this past November he turned to his next opportunity in the sport, as the manager and a kayak instructor for the Mid Atlantic retail giant and kayak school, Potomac Paddle Sports.  Although an established program, they were stoked to get Brian's energy and enthusiasm in the shop and more importantly, on the Potomac with their students.  Being a good instructor is so much more than knowing the techniques, or being a good kayaker yourself; it is all in the experience you give your students and how much fun they have.  Brian has the fun part down pat, get ready to smile.

B-Good 011Sky is the limit for Brian, Fletcher and Jessie and they are stoked to be a part of the new community of paddlers on Potomac River.  If you are passing through the area or are a Potomac local yourself, be sure to stop in the shop or by the put in at Anglers and introduce yourself to Brian, you'll be happy you did.

Guide Training With Discovery Sea Kayaks

Training

Got this great picture from our friends at Discovery Sea Kayaks, read on…

We packed our gear and loaded up to get on the water to practice doing rescues of tandem kayaks.  New guides with Discovery Sea Kayaks are always given the best equipment and we choose Werner Paddles for not just our guides but our clients as well.  In the image you can see two of my new guides, one is hard at work getting us loaded back in our kayak.  Practice builds confidence, so we get on the water as much as we can to work on our skills.  Having the right equipment goes along way in improving skill sets.

Discovery Sea Kayaks says thanks to Werner Paddles for building reliable  kayak paddles.

Jan Brabant of T.I. Adventures: "Stand Up Paddling is for everyone"

Posted 9 months ago

To say Jan Brabant is still getting after it is an understatement.  He built his College white water
kayak club in Colorado from the ground up. Started a family business teaching kayaking and running tours in New York's famous Thousand Island region. Showed young people there are no limits to how big you can go when he started charging the snow fields with his power kite. And now he is getting out ahead of the West Coast's latest fitness/action sport; stand up paddling.  "I want to be different, I want to seperate myself from the masses and give people and their familes something exciting to look forward to."  A mantra he follows himself and has built into his families business T.I. Adventures, getting people on the waterways of the Thousand Islands for over 23 years.

T.I. 1 Jan sees stand up as an amazing way to easily get the family on the water, tour the islands or get a great work out while taking in a sunset over the water.  I had the chance to get on the water with Jan last week and it is really a wonderland up there, a must do on any paddlers list.  If stand up is new for you don't sweat it, lessons and even guided tours are avaiable.  FYI, it does cost extra to rent the family dogs!

Regional Team Paddler-Trafford Mcrae Reports From Rainy Virginia

Posted 9 months ago

Continued South East rains find Trafford and Crew back on the "Jewell" of the Blue Ridge.

Gibson Wall The weather called for rain all last week and an email was sent out. Gordon was stuck at a black-tie wedding all weekend.  He managed to join us as we headed out for a Friday afternoon warm up run on the South Fork of the Tye.  The bottom half consists of continuous technical class 4+, leaving the remaining crew primed to hit the Jewell.  We sent Gordon off, all fired up, to suit up in his tux and hit the open bar. Trafford_KettleSaturday started off with a phone call from Gibson that Jewell Creek was at the perfect
level, so we headed out for an 80 degree blue-bird day of creeking.  Sunday was a repeat
of Saturday with a little less water but by no means low.  All in all, a killer weekend
of Southeastern creekin!

Waterman League World Tour

Posted 9 months ago

Logosnew I want to let everyone know about The Waterman League, which is supporting mass participation races and demos to encourage access for all to the incredible sport of Stand Up Paddling. On the opposite end of the spectrum (read hard charging – big wave maddness) they are gathering the world’s greatest Watermen for a world championship tour like no other.  The tour will be held in some of the most challenging waves in the world. Werner Paddles is stoked that Kainoa Beaupre will be representing!

The Stand Up World Tour™ has the goal to showcase and continuously re-define the outer limits of the sport and demonstrate how the sport has become quite literally the ‘Waterman’s choice. With a fleet that is brimming with colorful characters that have proved themselves across the complete cross section of ocean sports, the Stand Up World Tour will deliver their newest and greatest challenge….the chance to be crowned World Champion of a sport that embraces their complete skill set so wholeheartedly and that will demand the most complete level of oceanmanship, athleticism and courage to come out on top….
The events will take place at in these locations:

Teahupoo, Tahiti; Teahupoo has firmly established itself as one of the most challenging and demanding waves in the world.  Its power is unmatched, as are the consequences if things go wrong: breaking below sea level, the wave unloads itself over treacherously shallow coral reef.

Ocean Beach, California; Ocean Beach is one of the most exposed and unpredictable surfing beaches in all of California. Exposed to all the swell that the Pacific Ocean has to offer, Ocean Beach also presents the challenge of freezing cold water and the knowledge that the shark population in the area is not small. When it is on, Ocean Beach provides some of the most high performance surfing in California, with spectacular and powerful waves providing exhilarating rides no matter what the craft.

Makaha, Hawaii: Home to the sport of Stand Up Paddling and a globally recognized capital of the Waterman culture, ocean sports legends such as Brian Keaulana, Melvin Pu’u and Duane Desoto all hail from this beautiful beach town.

Be sure to check out Watermanleague.com for more info and updates. Here is a  teaser video for the upcoming tour.

Voice of the Rivers Experience

Posted 9 months ago

Robert_Dye I got a great email about this trip from Robert Dye.  Check out what college students at Brevard College are doing…

The Voice of the Rivers experience —which combines academics with outdoor exploration—is designed to educate the public and raise awareness of activities that threaten rivers; bring attention to organizations and groups poised to address those threats; and foster a sense of stewardship and community activity among the students who participate.

Since its inaugural 1997 expedition from Brevard, N.C. to the Gulf of Mexico, the Voice of the Rivers (VOR) program at Brevard College has offered students and faculty an opportunity to paddle and study a variety of ecologically and culturally significant rivers.

This year, two Brevard College faculty members and 11 students will paddle kayaks the length of the Catawba-Wateree watershed, beginning on the Catawba River near Linville Gorge, N.C and ending at the Atlantic Ocean in Charleston, S.C, over 400 river miles.  The Catawba-Wateree watershed was selected for the College’s fifth VOR expedition after being recognized by American Rivers as “America’s Most Endangered River” in 2008.

During their 18-day trip, the group will study about rivers and their importance to society, while camping along the riverbank and talking about their experiences with the people they meet. Plans are underway for VOR members to talk with school programs, media organizations and conservation groups in North and South Carolina as the group makes its way to the sea.

VOR students—whose majors include Art, Environmental Science, English, Elementary Education, Business, Theater, Music and Wilderness Leadership and Experiential Education—are also required to post daily journal entries, photos and videos of their travels and experiences online using Facebook, blogs and the College Web site.

Brevard College is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, Brevard College offers a range of distinctive baccalaureate degree programs.  The VOR program embodies the College’s commitment to a liberal arts education that is interdisciplinary and experiential.  Past VOR expeditions include trips down the Tennessee, Ohio and Mississippi rivers; the Green River; the Rio Santa Cruz, Rio Limay and Rio Negro rivers in Patagonia, Argentina; and the Savannah River.
For more information about Brevard College and the Voice of the Rivers program, please visit www.brevard.edu/vor or contact Robert Dye at dyerw@brevard.edu or 828-883-8946.

And The Winner Is… Correction In Results For Whitewater Stand Up Paddle Nationals

Posted 9 months ago

SUP.Nationals Just got an email from Paul Tefft at EnviroAction Productions who produced the Whitewater Stand Up Paddle Nationals this past weekend in Colorado.

There was a mix up in the results because of a rush to get things posted.  I think it is always tough to have to go back and "take away"  a victory from someone.  But just as someone loses, someone wins.

Werner Paddles, Dan Gavere has taken first place overall in the Men's Pro Division of the first ever Whitewater Stand Up Paddle Nationals.  Check out a full listing of the corrected results  you can get them here; Download 2009 WW SUP Champs Final. Recent Rain and South East Creeking

Posted 9 months ago

With great spring rains pounding the South East, creek boat is getting respect again through out the region.  Our good friend Trafford Mcrae reports on some recent steep creek action in Virgina.  Apparently it isn't just for Lovers anymore! Read on…

Trafford_top_of_Marbles

We’ve had great water the past few weeks in the VA Blue Ridge.  The North Fork of the Tye is solid class IV+ to class V technical creeking and with April and May rains it is nice to hit it during some warmer weather.  Marbles is the crux rapid on the North Fork of the Tye, drawing comparisons to the Green Narrows, Hammer Factor rapid, but ending up through a boatwide slot move to avoid a sieve. A solid crew has been joining Trafford for some Jewell Creek action pretty regularly as well.  Gordon Dalton, Brandon Reynolds, Gisbson Barbee and Shawn McClung have all been taking advantage of the high water.  Jewell Creek is an incredibly beautiful place that is really similar in character to the Eastern Escarpment runs of Western North Carolina.  Thanks to Trafford for the report, we hope you
and the team keep the photos coming.

Add Ontario's Twelve Mile Bay to the Must Paddle List.

Posted 9 months ago

(Words and Photos by Werner Paddle's Danny Mongno.)

12 Mile Bay 028 Twelve Mile Bay is a breath taking paddling destination on Ontario's Georgian Bay.  Leading
my first ever kayak tour in this part of the world was Bill Swift, owner of Swift Canoe
and Kayak
, and members of his staff from their Gravenhurst and Georgian Bay stores. The
diversity of scenery was certainly the most exciting thing for me and there was never a
boring moment of paddling.  We transitioned from calm tranquil water moving between small
island chains to the open waters of the bay and rolling wind driven waves.  It was like a combination
of the Adirondacks and the Maine Island Trail.  Conversation among new friends, ample sightings of bird life and the intersting waters we paddled on made the 18 km trip seem to go almost too fast.

12 Mile Bay 029 I have a standing invite to get back out there this fall and spend a few days camping and exploring even more of this great region, I can hardly wait.  If you plan to be in this area this season and want to take some time to explore 12 Mile Bay, be sure to check in with the folks at Swift to get some advice on where to go and get yourself and your family set up with some rental boats.

Whitewater Stand Up Paddle Nationals

Posted 9 months ago

Dan Gavere checks in from the field.  He is traveling in Colorado and brings us this report and photos…

_Q8T8311 Photo: Dan Gavere; Dawn Patrol on the river: Early morning focus, determination, and visualization…

The first ever Whitewater Stand Up Paddle Nationals went off this weekend in Glenwood Springs Colorado.  The Colorado river was aver 11,000 cubic feet per second or in other words BIG!  With water temps in the 40's over 20 competitors battled the swollen Colorado River in a 3 part competition combining downriver racing, slalom, and wave surfing.  One of the most interesting aspects of the event were the wide and diverse backgrounds of watermen and women who participated and came together for the event.  Competitors came from as far away as Hawaii, Utah, and Wyoming to compete and test their skills against the river and each other.  The first event started at 10 am at Grizzly Creek on the Colorado river where each class of paddlers lined up and started all together with just 2 minute intervals between classes.  This was a 6 mile downstream race to Two Rivers Park through class II and III whitewater.  They started with the fastest paddlers last so there was tons of passing in the rapids and tactics being used to make moves and find the fastest lines down the river.  The the main battle between Charlie MacArthur and Dan Gavere in the men's pro class  culminated at the finish with Dan G edging out Charlie by a mere 2 seconds in nearly a photo finish.  Next was the Slalom race which is a timed race where each competitor races down a class 2 rapid while having to make marked gates by paddling upstream.  There were 5 upstream gates with judges at each gate to insure each paddler passes through in the proper direction.  Many of the competitors had never done a slalom event before and enjoyed the technical challenge and fun it provided.

_Q8T8312 Photo: Dan Gavere. Sweet Success Paddler: Nikki Gregg Location:  Glenwood Springs Whitewater Park,

After the slalom the event ended they moved down to the infamous Glenwood Springs Whitewater Park featuring "The Wave".  Each competitor got 3 one minute rides on the wave with their single best ride being scored.  With a giant flow of 11,000 CFS just being able to get on the wave was a huge accomplishment.  Once on the wave competitors could, carve, smack, and slash for points from the from the judges.  We saw moves like ollies (Dan G), spins (Nolan/Charlie/Liam), coffins (Hobie), one footers, and a plethora of unique and traditional surfing maneuvers from the competitors.  The results for the Slalom and Surf were not announced but for the Overall the results are as follows (these are
unofficial):

Pro Men Overall

1st Charlie McArthur-CO
2nd Dan Gavere-OR
3rd David Collins-WY

Pro Women
1st Corral Ferguson-CO
2nd Jenny McArthur-CO
3rd Nikki Gregg-HI

Amateur Men's
1st Matt
2nd Seth
3rd Earl

Thanks to Paul Teft and Charlie McArthur for putting this together.

Solo Kayaking Expedition for the Wildland Firefighter Foundation

Posted 10 months ago

Shapeimage_2 We can all use a great story of people giving of themselves.  Here is a post from one such paddler…

In October 2009 Massachusetts based sea kayaker Justin Deforest will attempt to kayak down the east coast of the United States to raise money for the Wildland Firefighter Foundation. This 1300 mile trip will start in Norfolk, Virginia and follow both the Intra-Coastal Waterway and the Atlantic coast to their end in Key West, Florida.

Transparent Transparent When asked why I want paddle this route and this cause my answer is simple: “the Wildland Firefighter Foundation is an organization I respect and support and this is my way of showing that. By kayaking down the Atlantic coastline I will be able to interact with local communities and spread the word about the foundation. There are very few places in the country not affected by wildfire, be it southern California or the coast of South Carolina.” Every year thousands of firefighters leave their homes, work long hours and camp in the dirt to protect the great outdoors we love so much. Sometimes accidents do happen and firefighters get injured or killed and that is where the Foundation comes in. The Wildland Firefighter Foundation's main focus is to help families of firefighters killed in the line of duty and to assist injured firefighters and their families.

Transparent Before working as a wildland firefighter for the National Park Service, I was a military diver assigned to a counter-terrorism unit based in Puget Sound, Washington. In 2005, I was medically retired when I developed an Auto Immune disorder from an infection he contracted while on deployment. Even with daily injections and swollen joints, I am trilled to have found an activity that brings me back to the ocean. Follow Justin's trip on his site, where you can also make a donation to the Wildland Firefighter Foundation.

Juniors Show Up In Force To Golden High School Event

Posted 10 months ago

Wm_normal_lauren_s Werner Team Member, Lauren Burress, sends n this trip report from the road in Colorado…

We officially kicked off our Colorado tour on May 9th, at an event in Golden. We arrived just a couple of hours before the down river race started, and was amazed with all of the juniors that showed up! After registering me in all events possible (Freestyle, Slalom, and Down River Racing), dad and I decided that I would paddle his BEAST! (The Mega Rocker) So I would have the greatest advantage possible, without borrowing a wild water boat. I think I may have compressed my spine carrying the 49 pound boat on my head to the start of the race. But it was apparently very helpful, getting me a 2nd place in the end! After getting a little play boat action in at Library Hole, we headed to the Griffith's for some yummy spaghetti, and hit the hay.

The next day was the Freestyle rodeo followed by the Slalom event. Dad woke me up early to practice before the event, and as always it was nice and chilly. It definitely makes you appreciate Tennessee's “cold” water. The freestyle event had an awesome turn out, with about 15+ juniors! I competed just second to last in the event and was pumped up by the time it was my turn. I made it to finals in the Junior Mens, and came out with a 2nd  place. I was pretty happy with my rides and was content with what I did.

Up next was the Slalom competition, I was really excited about this event because it was my third Slalom race! A personal goal for this particular race was to not miss any of the gates, and I didn't! I was happy to find out I only had 3 touches, and finished in 2nd once again. :) This was a great event and had an enormous amount of juniors! Golden will be holding Senior and Junior events the next three Wednesdays, starting on the 20th . If your any where near the area you should stop by, the events start at 5 o'clock.

See you on the river,
Lauren Burress

Thousands Attend Paddling Festivals In Germany

Posted 10 months ago

PP1.1 This post comes to us courtesy of Kanumagazin.  Images are all from Michael Neumann and text has been supplied by Judith Prechtl.

On April 18 and 19 the second of five »Globeboot Festivals«  took place on »Stadtparksee« in Hamburg. One week later boats, tents and the crowd moved on to Berlin. Ten thousand outdoor-enthusiasts came to try 80 boats and visit over 100 tents.  They enjoyed two days of bright sunshine and had fun at the many side events.

PP2.2 Globetrotter Ausrüstung, Europe's largest supplier for outdoor-sports, has proven their talent in organising events many times before at the festival series that take place right at the start of the paddling season each year. This time however, it seemed they had a direct connection to the weather gods. Few times before, the visitors of »Globeboot Hamburg«, the largest of five testivals, could enjoy the sun beaming down in full power. Thanks to high »Reinhild«!

PP2.2 The location at the »Stadtparksee« turned out to be perfect for the event. 100 tents of any shape and color were put up on the lawn nearby, as were two high ropes courses, a lumberjack camp and dozens of information desks on many different outdoor topics. Also catering was provided for the visitors. The major attraction nonetheless was made up by 80 boats of different brands. Often the manufacturers themselves were present to give information on their products. The morning was used by many experienced paddlers while in the afternoon beginners dominated the scene. Some of whom could not help it and test the boats end-stability to more than 100% — no problem also: Swimmers where quickly fished out of the water by the safety-crew. On shore the Globetrotter Team took care for the dry up.

PP4.4 Those who did not want to paddle themselves — or could not find a suitable boat because of  the great rush — could gather theoretical information on canoeing or watch many paddling demonstrations such as a canoe polo match, flat-water freestyle or sea-kayaking rescue techniques. Paddling resistant visitors could enjoy different activities in the lumberjack camp, try freshly cooked outdoor meals prepared by the Globetrotter apprentices, test their personal limits on the high ropes courses (one for big boys and girls, one for little ones) or ride the automatic Tatonka rodeo bull.

If you missed out on the Globeboot in Hamburg, there is no need to grieve! In May the Globetrotter Stores in Köln and Dresden ask round to »sit-down-and-paddle« on »Heider Bergsee« and the river »Elbe«. Only the good weather cannot be assured in advance.
Dates:
9. + 10. Mai, Dresden
16. + 17. Mai, Köln

Jerry's Baddle Event Supports ALS & The Green River Access Fund

Werner Paddle's Mette Bergvall and Danny Mongno, Asheville NC locals, were especially honored to donate a paddle to suport Jerry's Baddle this past weekend.  A combined extreme kayak race and road bike race, on the Green River and in and out of the gorge, is in memory of Green River local Jerry Beckwith who was a victim of ALS.  All proceeds from the race and the auction go to ALS and the Green River Access fund.  You can learn more about the cause at www.jerrysbaddle.org and be sure to take some time to read and check out photos on our friend Shane Bendict's blog from this past weekend's event.

Trip of the Week in Southern New England

Posted 10 months ago

The first weekend in May always brings a lot of excitement to my paddling heart.  First off you have the great opportunities to take free classes and try a huge array of boats and gear at North Cove Outfitters and The Kayak Centre’s demo weekends.  Plus the chance to paddle some of southern New England’s most amazing coast lines is just too big a reason to not pack the car and head out.

My trip of the week; the one I look forward to every year? The Thimble Islands in Branford CT.  It is so easily accessible to I-95 it is almost a sin to not pull off and get your boat wet.  My original reason for getting so excited about paddling the Thimbles this weekend dates back to when I worked with Impex Kayaks Thimble .  You see, there is a train trestle, 12’ of clearance, which guards the put in at Stony Creek. So with my truck loaded with sea kayaks, it was too tall to get under the tresel which did not allow me to get to the Thimbles.  However, after I unloaded at North Cove’s event I was stealth baby!  This allowed me to sneak away for a few hours after set up to enjoy some of my favorite paddling.

The Thimble Islands are a picturesque spot on the Connecticut coast. It’s as though the pink-granite-ringed islands of the Maine coast migrated south just off the quiet town of Stony Creek and with a rough count of 365 small to large islands there is plenty to see.  Be respectful of the locals when you show up, both the local paddlers who always deal with the limited parking and of course to those who inhabit the islands.  If you are coming from the north and you are just going to be to far away to come see me on the water on Friday, call the staff at The Kayak Centre and be sure to ask about some local paddling in Wickford that will allow you to enjoy some paddling when you at their event learning about…well paddling.  Hope to see you on the water.

Charleston Sea Kayak Symposium

Posted 11 months ago

Dad&Kid Mette Bergvall, Werner Paddles SE Sales Representative posts here about the Charleston Sea Kayak Symosium…

The event was put on by Charleston County Parks and Recreation last weekend.  It was a great event with instructional and educational classes, some taught by Werner Paddles very own Danny Mongno.  The event is a weekend full of paddling of all types, kayaks, canoes, SUP boards, outriggers and even motorized kayaks.  There were many manufactures present demoing products, as well as quite a few retailers that set up shop to sell product.  We wrote many paddle prescriptions through our custom fit evaluation program.  In fact we custom fit a paddler for a paddle she won from Sea Kayaker Magazine

SUPKid We had quite a bit of interest in out SUP board demos.  They were out all weekend!  Thanks to SurfTech, Hurricane and Uli for the demo boards.  Werner Paddles also took a few days before the event to SUP in the surf at Folly Beach.  The waves were not so great for the surfers, but the waves were perfect for us on our SUP boards.  We all caught plenty of waves and event surfed with a dolphin.  In addition to the surf we enjoyed a down winder in the creek behind the beach, the one pictured at sunset.  It was great to get a free ride with the falling tide and the blowing wind!

I love my job!

Werner Paddles Supports "I Speak For The Rivers"

Posted 11 months ago

I.speak Below is a message from the Algonquin College White Water Team Expedition 2009.

Good morning boaters. As many paddlers are aware (or should be!) the conservative government has passed Bill C-10, The Budget Implementation Act. This bill was passed without consulting the public in order to amend Canada’s Navigable Waters Protection Act (NWPA). This empowers the provincial government to allow development on any body of water Canada that has a draught of 1 meter or less without properly assessing the environmental damage it would cause. This issue affects every Canadian and their children’s historic right to paddle rivers or any body of water in Canada.

I.speak The ‘I speak for Rivers Foundation’ was started by Scott MacGregor, founder of Rapid Magazine in the Ottawa Valley in an effort to raise awareness and inspire people to speak out against this political transgression. Now, 6 students of Algonquin College’s Outdoor Adventure (Luke Morris, Will Andrews, Pierre Fournier, Byron Chittick, Billy Blades, Colin Loose) program are using their final expedition as an opportunity and taking to Black River, Fish Creek, The New River (Gorge Section) and The Upper Youghiogheny River on 11 day tour across the North Eastern United States. Ending the journey with a paddler celebration at MACK fest weekend in Marmora, Ontario. Team ACWW1 (Algonquin College White Water 1) is paddling to bring awareness to a part of the American paddling community who may also use our waterways. We encourage anyone who reads this blog to  visit and sign up.

Cheers,
Team ACWW1

SUP for Washington Water Trails

Posted 11 months ago

Ken1 Ken Campbell blogs here about the Puget Sound Challenge, you can follow him regularly on his blog

The Puget Sound Challenge is a 150 nautical mile paddling challenge that goes out to all kayakers, canoeists, rowers, and any human powered craft to complete the selected course in one year. The paddle is from Belfair to Allyn, WA. The purpose of this event is to create a fun challenge unique to Washington state and help raise money for Washington Water Trails.

The main goals of the Washington Water Trails Association (WWTA) are to promote advocacy, education, and stewardship of public access to Washington’s waterways for people in human and wind powered beachable watercraft. WWTA is a non profit organization that incorporated in 1990 after realizing that urbanization and privatization of Washington’s shorelines are limiting access to and rapidly changing the pristine nature of Washington’s waterways. WWTA provides a clear voice for small boater’s rights and a helping hand to preserve access to Washington’s waters for future generations.

I have been exploring Washington waters by sea kayak and canoe for the last two decades. Paddling my own small boat had been, and continues to be, an integral part of my outdoor experience but it is not the only way I have found to enjoy the water. This year, I plan to paddle the Puget Sound Challenge on a Standup Paddleboard (SUP), something that has not been done before. Although SUPs are quite common elsewhere – Hawaii, California, etc. – they are just starting to make an appearance here in the Pacific Northwest. I am happy and proud to make this attempt in order to raise money for a very worthy cause. Throughout my paddling pursuits, I have found WWTA to be a stalwart defender of this unique environment as well as a voice for access that would otherwise not have been there. Every kayaker, canoeist and paddle boarder owes this fine organization their gratitude and support. Your donation will help to ensure that WWTA can continue to expand and improve water trails in Washington.

New Zeland National Slalom Championships

Posted 11 months ago

Werner.nikki

Werner Team member, Nikki Kelly blogs here about her recent participating in the National Slalom Championships in New Zeland…

National Slalom Championships were held over the Easter weekend with 300 plus competitors;what I would call a growing sport in New Zealand.   No practice, 20 gates, two runs, best one counts.  The ultimate training for extreme racing, each gate is a sequence of strokes best made for a fast and no penalty score, much like the must make moves on Home stake steep creek race at Vail Games – all under the pressure of competition.  I take my mind to that place, prepare for the race, visualize the moves, sit at the start line then take those first series of forward strokes off the mark, pulling hard, feeling smooth – then I know I have the groove.   My two runs were night and day.  The first I couldn’t get purchase or balance, the 2nd I pulled hard all the way through, hit my lines and felt elated at the end.  I took out 2nd place, just behind our Olympian.
Cool – Nikki

23rd Annual Santa Cruz Surf Festival

Posted 11 months ago

IMG_3849  Dan Gavere blogs about the Santa Cruz Surf Festival…

The 23rd Annual Santa Cruz Surf Fest went off March 21-23, competitors came from as far away as Brasil, England and Canada.  Known as the worlds number one most competitive kayak surf competition, the SCSF, has become a barometer for the sport.  This year was no exception, and although the waves were small, paddlers still got the chance to display their abilities in one of the best surf breaks in the country - Steamer Lane.  Known for its heavy localism; a paddler would not normally paddle out, nor is advised to be out at this break at any other time outside of the annual competition. Which makes this event worth the price of admission alone.  Dennis Judson, along with a stellar team of volunteers, professional surf judges and a host of sponsors pulled it off once again for the 23rd time and put on an excellent event that was well run and a pleasure to watch and/or participate in.

IMG_3852 Dennis Judson one of the organizers from Adventure Sports Unlimited  had this to say…

“The 23rd Annual Santa Cruz Kayak Surf Festival was simply grand.  Sitting there at Steamers with the sun shinning on my face looking at Steamer-smooth and glassy with an off shore blowing rooster tails off the overhead waves was simply a wonderful thing to be a part of.  I mean the view was breathtaking with waves that you could almost see through, deep blue skis studded with pure white puffy clouds and whales perusing the outside break-it was stunning!  I want to officially thank all who had a part in this gathering-for it is a gathering of people who come to share in this magnificent appreciation of this energy space.  The addition of the Stand-up (SUP) group was not only another tribute to this paradigm but demonstrated what a beautiful dance with waves this sport represents.  I will take out my stand-up board with a new commitment born from the skills these surfers displayed.  SUP will be a permanent asset in all our events.

To make sure that no one is left out of the next confluence of energy of paddle surfing at Steamer Lane, I am announcing the dates for the Festival in 2010.  We have submitted our requests for March 26th-28th of 2010.  This event demonstrated the combined positive karma of all can prevail over anything.  Thank you, my hats off to all who participated.”

Spring Paddling On Lake Union

Posted 11 months ago

K.K Keith Krueger is Werner's Production Manager.  Here he blogs about a nice little paddling trip…

We had our first nice spring days this weekend.  I went out paddling on Lake Union in Seattle with my wife and her parents and shared a couple of pictures I took with customer service.

K.K.0  The funky looking contraption is at Gas Works park on Lake Union.  It was built in 1906 to convert gas from coal.  When it became obsolete they made a park out of the place and left all the equipment standing.

Lake Union is a very cool place to go paddling in a "city" kind of way.  You have the whole Seattle skyline and city right in front of you.  There are sea planes taking off and landing.  There are often times crew teams out on the lake from the University of Washington.

I rented Kayaks from Northwest Ourdoor Center which is right on the lake.  They have a long standing relationship with Werner.  When they found out I worked at Werner they set me up with Kallistes and great rental boats.  If you are ever in Seattle check them out – you can paddle right from the shop. Really nice folks.

Eastern Horizons to Premier at New England Paddle Sports Show

Posted 11 months ago

6a00e5519ea7d28834011168ceb083970c-800wi With the success of his first feature length kayaking film, Pacific Horizons, it didn't take long for Squamish BC's Bryan Smith to start planning his paddling routes along the East Coast of the US and Canada.

In partnership with The Kittery Trading Post, Werner Paddles, P&H Sea Kayaks and Kokatat, Bryan's latest film Eastern Horizons will premier on the East Coast, Friday April 3rd at the New England Paddle Sports Show, in Durham NH.  The movie has been honored by the Reel Paddling Film Festival's, Kayak Movie of the Year.

It is hard to call it a sea kayak movie.  Although Bryan and the entourage of paddlers he joins up use sea kayaks as their exploration vehicle, the film truly captures the spirit of adventure, the mystique of the locales and the people he meets their.  The film spans the Atlantic Ocean, capturing the wildlife rich swamps and mangroves of the Carolinas to the icebergs of Newfoundland; from surfing the "zipper" at Tybee Island, Georgia to playing in the tidal flows around Nova Scotia's Bay of Fundy; and from capturing the iconic urban landscapes of New York City to the remote fishing villages of Quebec's north shore.

Eastern Horizons will inspire paddlers and non-paddlers alike to get out and explore the ocean!  While at Canoecopia, be sure to stop by the Werner Paddles booth to meet Bryan as well as other athletes who star in the film.  We are just as excited about the films premier as you are, so we look forward to seeing you at the NEPS.

White Squall Paddling Centre Presents Paddle Party 2009

Posted 11 months ago

WS.drysuit_race When Tim Graham and the entire staff at White Squall wanted to invite paddlers for a gathering at their shop in Nobel, Ontario, the word Symposium never really worked.  Their weekend event, May 16th-17th, will offer kayak instruction for the beginner to the advanced skill level paddler but there is just so much more.  With that in mind they couldn’t help but just call it a Paddle Party.  This really has turned into a family event and with the band, card board boat races and even rumors of “friendly chickens,” why would you not want join the party in this beautiful part of the world.  Did we mention that this is a FREE event?  WS.canoe_family That includes all the above mentioned fun as well as slide shows, boat and gear demos, from all the leading manufactures, and a camp cook out, don’t worry the “friendly chickens” will only be spectators here.  Email the gang with questions at  or check out the event beta at the White Squall web site.

Kainoa Beaupre Checks In From The North Shore

Posted 11 months ago

Aloha gang, Kainoa here to fill you in on the latest happenings in Hawaii. Since I arrived back home to Oahu what I thought would be all boardshorts and slippers turned into jeans and a hoodie as if I never left Cali. The weather here in Oahu was the coldest its been in a really long time. Only as of mid March have I been able to get rid of my long sleeve wet suit top, and thats only been a hand full of times.

On a more positive note I've been catching some really great end of the winter swells in the country(North Shore Oahu) at breaks like Laniakea, Leftovers,  and some secret spots on the east shore of Oahu. I also had the pleasure to spend a day in Makaha with one of the most spiritually in touch human being, Troy Palamalu. Uncle Mel Pu'u hosted a BBQ and surf session for all of us and the day was perfect. The waves were small, but perfect to teach Troy how to surf and do Standup paddle surfing. All that's left to say about Troy is he is a pure Athlete!! Kainoa Mcgee took met up with Troy for a surf session and his comment about Troy when giving him pointers was"Troy listens and does everything he's told". Troy Palamalu is the real deal, and it was an "honor" to have met him and hang out with him and his Ohana (family). John Grace of Penstock Productions was also in town to work on a film project for Werner.  I introduced him to some of the well respected waterman in Hawaii and I feel we captured the concept really well.

In my arsenal of paddles I've been using my favorite paddle the Spanker and it's been a real comfortable fit for my style of surfing. Since one of my most popular moves is to do a slide tail maneuver I end up contorting myself into a really awkward position where I'm very laid back into the white water of the wave and laying heavily on my paddle. Because the Spanker blade is so wide it enough surface area to enable me to lay onto it as well as push me back up to the upright position. This is just one of the many reasons I'm so particular about my paddles. I will be giving some more of my input each month, but for now Aloha and Malama(see ya and take care).

New Kayaks Open Up New Experiences

Posted 11 months ago

Cross.DSC_5239 What are people calling these two new kayaks from Pyranha and Liquid Logic, hybrid? crossover? We just call them awesome.  The Fusion by Pyranha and the Remix XP by Liquid Logic offer paddlers the ability to safely navigate modest white water while, with the easy flip of a switch, drop a tracking aiding skeg and put some miles in on placid flat water.  "The Werner Tybee in either carbon reinforced nylon or fiberglass reinforced nylon in a 205 or 210 length is the perfect paddle for these new boats," says Danny Mongno.

Cross.DSC_5359 The concept of a switch hitting kayak has been tried before but never quite to the level of these two great designs.  Certainly people who know they are covering a lot of calm water want a recreational or touring kayak and those who are river junkies will go for a full fledged river kayak, but these really give people a solid option who just need a little of each.  Both boats offer more ample cockpit space, an actual dry hatch with bulkhead in the rear and a drop skeg.

Cross.XP We talked to Dinver McClure at Pyranha Kayaks. “I grew up on the river, don’t get me wrong I love my creek boat.  But how cool is it to throw two Fusions on the roof when I go on vacation with my son and be able check out the lake, catch some bass and still play on the river?”  Woody Calloway and Justin McGiver of Liquid Logic both took the XP on self support missions down the Grand Canyon this winter and yes the hatch works and the skeg wasn’t bad either on all that flat water!

Stop by a shop near you and check out these new kayaks and see how they can expand your enjoyment of the outside world.

Sea Kayak with Gordon Brown – the DVD Series

Posted 11 months ago

Gordon.web Top UK sea kayak coach Gordon Brown is filming a series of instructional DVDs, the first of which will be released later this year.

Following the phenomenal success of his book, Sea Kayak – a Manual for Intermediate and Advance Sea Kayakers published by Pesda Press, Gordon spent two years developing the format for DVD. Shot entirely on the Isle of Skye, the first production concentrates on paddle technique and will combine the narrative of a multi-day expedition along the coast of this spectacular island with his unique and effective style of coaching.

The instructional sequences show progression from calm water to rough, with Gordon explaining the refinements needed to cope with the changing conditions.  Cameras on the front, rear, above and even inside the kayak capture every nuance, while shore and boat based cameras allow detailed slow-motion analysis of technique.  Rescues, towing and more will come in subsequent productions.
Gordon says: “It is challenging to translate one-on-one coaching into a style which works on DVD.  But this means I can share two of my passions – sea kayaking and the beauty of the Isle of Skye.”

The DVD is being shot and edited by Simon Willis who runs Sunart Media.  Simon is a former BBC video journalist and known to sea kayakers around the world through his podcast website SeaKayakRoutes.com.

Gordon and his wife Morag owns and run Skyak Adventures, on the Isle of Skye, Scotland.  He is an internationally renowned sea kayak coach, teaching and paddling across the globe.

For more information on the series contact Simon Willis at Sunart Media. Best of luck to you Gordon, we know we will have our names on the waiting list.

Ernie Alverez Takes A Hard Won First Place In Puerto Rico's SUP Contest

Posted 11 months ago

This was sent to us from Carlos Gonzalez at Beach Cats in Puerto Rico…

I wanted to let you know that this last weekend we had Puerto Rico's first contest that included SUP Surfing.  The contest took place at old San Juan legendary break Playa La 8. Conditions where somewhat extreme, 12‘ to 15’ faces on 4 wave sets, wave selection was critical since all sets included at least 2 closeouts.  Playa La 8 is known for hitting hard at 7’ at 14’ it doesn’t only hit you it want to break you in half.

Ernie showed patience and poise waiting for the best wave and then charging them with a combination of turns that made everyone look twice to realize that he was doing this on a SUP and NOT on a 6’ shortboard, sticking his paddle on the face and completing bottom turns, cutbacks, roundhouses, smacking the lip hard.

The top 2 places of the Finals heat was hard fought between Javier Gorbea and Ernie Alvarez, Mario Oronoz and Eliezer, Ernie kept his plan of picking the best wave because at this size getting back to the peak was not a guarantee, he picked the best wave of the set carving hard turns and completing the wave to the end, Javier did not plan to give in to his friend Ernie, but after his first wave he notice that Eliezer had broken his leash and consequently lost his board, Javier took it upon him self to rescue the board until help from the shore arrived.  After that Javier was back at the peak charging waves to put forward his best effort forward for the coveted first place but Ernie’s best wave of the heat on the eyes of the judges proved unbeatable.

Ernie got first place, Javier got second place, Mario got 3rd place.  I am going to try to get some pictures and send them to you, by the way Ernie was paddling with his Werner Spanker, he cannot wait for his wave design carbon Nitro to arrive. I inform him that Beach Cats would be getting them a bit ahead of schedule in early April, and was pumped to learn that one of those was his already.
