Da Hui Trials are completed in impressive conditions

Staying true to form here at the Sunset Beach Pro, the Opening event of the 2012 Stand Up World Tour season, the trials kicked off in epic 8ft+ surf, as contending athletes stepped up to do battle.

With a challenging forecast that is certainly not lacking in swell, but has some challenging winds and storm surf to deal with, athletes were greeted with light and variable winds and solid surf for the first day of competiton at Sunset Beach. Chuck Patterson stands out again at the Da Hui Trials

Chuck Patterson once again matches power with power and stands out in the Da Hui Trials, presented by Mobi Pcs, putting on a display of powerful surfing in the sizeable conditions on tap at Sunset Beach. Chuck scored some of the best rides of the day and clearly earns his place in the Main event alongside the World’s best.

Big Island’s Kainoa Hauanio puts on an impressive display

From the outset of the Trials, Kainoa Hauanio puts on a text book display of stand up paddlesurfing, dominating his heats to earn his well deserved place in the Main Event. Despite increasing winds towards the end of the day, Kainoa managed to pull in and come out of an impressive barrel, to complement an already well executed ride.

Kainoa will certainly be a name to watch out for in the Main event, having already proved his worth in the Hawaii Island Finals in 2011.

Yuri Daberkow from Brazil shines at Sunset Beach

Young Yuri Daberkow from Brazil shines in the powerful surf at Sunset, earning his place in the Main event and looking to establish himself on Tour. After a competing in Brazil and then the Big Island, Yuri is fast becoming a fixture and is another one of the phenomenal U16 youth talent coming up in the sport. He is certainly someone to look out for through 2012.

Mo Freitas also stands out, narrowly missing out on his place in the Main event.

Ekolu Kalama: officially back here at the Sunset Beach Pro

After a hiatus from Stand Up World Tour competition in 2011, Ekolu Kalama was back in action here at Sunset Beach, working his way through the Trials and back into the Main Event. The conditions suited his larger build and powerful riding style, as he earned his place in the Main Event.

Also making it through the Trials into the Main Event

Also making it through the Trials and into the Main Event is Australia’s Beau Nixon, who showed great form through the Trials, displaying great promise as we look ahead to the 2012 Stand Up World Tour.

Also shining was UluBoi Napeahi, who put together some impressive rides at Sunset dersevedly earning his spot in the Main Event.

Finally, shortboarder Makua Rothman makes the transition to Stand Up with ease at his home break, clearly displaying his core roots and well rounded abilities, earning his place in the Main event of the Sunset Beach Pro, presented by Malibu and Starboard and in conjunction with Maui Jim Eyewear.

Crowds flock to Sunset Beach for the World Tour Opener

A packed Sunset Beach was on hand to witness the action unfold at the Da Hui Trials, with non stop action from start to finish. Now the qualification process is complete, all athletes will be readying themselves for the Main Event, as the World’s best prepare to do battle in what will undoubtedly be one of the most spectacular showdowns yet on the Stand Up World Tour.

We have stormy conditions here on the North Shore that will last through Wednesday, with the next window for competition beginning Thursday and lasting through the weeend.
