Here’s part two of our canoe paddling technique video with elite paddler and championship coach John Puakea. In this video, Johnny continues teaching us the importance of “The Catch”. According to Johnny, once you get your catch right and master it, then you can work on the rest of your paddle stroke, your conditioning, and your strength.

The 2018 Kerama Blue Cup was an event to remember, with its stunning blue water and amazing island life style. It was definitely a mission to get here for me coming from Hawaii with 20 hours of traveling to Okinawa. Then jumping on a 3 hour ferry ride to some incredible islands that reminded me of back home.

Here’s another canoe paddling technique video from elite paddler and championship coach John Puakea. This time Johnny teaches us in detail an important part of the canoe paddle stroke: “The Catch”. According to Johnny, it is critical to set your catch correctly since it is the first part of your paddle stroke. If you don’t get the catch right, it will be hard to get the rest of your stroke right as well. Johnny himself spent one year mastering his catch.

John Puakea Presents the Kahele OC1 Canoe

We’re back with canoe designer and championship coach John Puakea as he shares his latest creation with us, the Kahele OC1 canoe. Johnny designed the Kahele for improved efficiency by eliminating length in the nose and tail of the canoe. Although the Kahele is shorter than most OC1 canoes, it features a longer, optimized waterline of about 19 feet. According to Johnny, this gives the Kahele faster flatwater speeds and more high-end speed in the bumps. The shorter length also makes the Kahele more maneuverable in the surf.

The 2018 Olukai was another great event with some crazy conditions that we will be talking about for years to come!

The race was originally supposed to be on Saturday, but with the crazy north winds and lots of rain it was postponed until Sunday. I woke up early to have the meeting about doing either a course race or the traditional downwinder. The decision was made and I headed towards Maliko for an 11:30 start.
