C4 Waterman Field Report #39

Posted 4 weeks ago

Where: Alaska When: June 6, 2008 From Liam Wilmott, C4 Waterman Associate Being a surfer in a surf-loving family that lives on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, a trip to Alaska in the middle of summer may seem a strange choice of destination. However, with the onset of stand-up paddling, and its potential to make any day on any body of water a blast, a trip to the land of 10,000 glaciers with a sun that never set promised to be a real adventure.
Flying up Shelikof Straight and Cook Inlet into our arrival point of Anchorage, it was stirring to see mountains and snow after such a lengthy tropical hiatus. When you see glaciers like this one below, so huge they're easily visible from 10,000 feet, it's mind-boggling to think that thousands of years of flow-freeze are now rapidly dissipating - inches every year, sometimes even feet.
Alaska With seemingly endless potential for flat water adventures it was hard not to pump up the ULI (ultra light inflatable) and paddle out at every turn. [Link]

The Top 5 Myths, Mistakes, and Misconceptions by Dave Parmenter It seems the new hybrid sport of stand-up paddling and surfing is getting more popular everyday. That’s great, but things are moving so fast that it is getting hard to keep up with all the advances. It seems like each day another SUP-oriented business sprouts up, and each seems to have its own ideas about equipment and techniques. Frankly, this infant sport is in an awkward phase———–its explosive growth has outpaced the formation of a core elite. Simply put, at present there are very few seasoned authorities on SUP surfing out there, yet an increasing number of insta-experts are inflicting all sorts of baloney on the gullible SUP newcomer.
With that in mind, we thought we ought to tackle a handful of the most common SUP errors we encounter in our travels…. [Link]

C4 Waterman Field Report #37

Posted 8 weeks ago

Where: Maunalua Bay, O'ahu When: May 25th, 2008 What: 1st Annual Race For The Reef Paddling Fundraiser The trade winds were light and the bumps hard to find, but after a long week of kona winds and vog, Sunday May 25th saw O`ahu paddlesports enthusiasts greeting the first returning puffs of the northeast tradewinds with open arms. Arriving at Hawaii Kai, the organizers of the Race For The Reef Paddling Fundraiser found a mob of paddlers milling around the registration table, eager to get out there and fly 'downhill' on the 'Hawaii Kai run.' A staple for O'ahu paddlers, the 8-mile course draws a line directly downwind from Koko Head to Diamond Head; when the trades are howling it's one long chain of 'railroading' bumps and chops.
Greg Pavao and Nolan Martin paddled Vortice XPs in the race. Though the race was open to OC1s, OC2s, surf skis, and paddleboards, it was the stand-up paddleboard division that fielded the most entrants. SUPs of all descriptions lined up at water's edge at the mouth of the Hawaii Kai Marina. "This is a landmark day for the sport," observed C4 Waterman's Todd Bradley. "I mean, look at the stand-up boards here. Five years ago there was just a handful of us doing this, getting all sorts of funny looks from all the guys on regular paddleboards." [Link]

Where: Pailolo Channel, Hawaii When: April 26, 2008 What: Kai Wa'a/Smith Builders, LLC Maui to Molokai Challenge Mid April marks the beginning of the paddle sports racing season in Hawaii. As the winter surf season ebbs to a close, it's time for the C4 crew to join all the canoe, surf ski and paddleboard enthusiasts in gearing up for a summer full of training, races, and plain ole holoholo larks. After spending the past four paddle seasons shaping and designing open ocean stand-up race boards with Brian Keaulana, Todd Bradley, Archie Kalepa, and Karel Tresnak, I was keen to get the new C4 Vortice XP out in some ripping trade wind bumps and point that baby downhill. So I was stoked when my Molokai Channel partner, Archie Kalepa, rang up to invite me to paddle with him in a race across the Pailolo Channel to Kaunakakai on Molokai. Arch is more or less the godfather of stand-up paddleboard racing, being the first guy, back in 2004, to take on the 32-nautical-mile Kaiwi Channel standing up. [Link]

Emmet O'Doherty Wins Irish SUP Championship

Posted 12 weeks ago

IRISH SURFING ASSOCIATION PRESS RELEASE
It was an early start on Saturday morning for Irish surfers competing in the Denny Irish Surfing Championships with the first heat in the water at 8.00am at Tullan Strand. With the wave forecast for Sunday looking poor event organisers were eager to complete the event in one day. The conditions on tullan strand were shoulder to head high rights and lefts peeling from a hollow wedgie peak. It was quite inconsistent between sets and the stiff offshore wind made it difficult to hold position in the line-up, and furthermore, to drop in to the steep take-off section on the SUP's.

About 5.30pm history was made as the first ever Irish National Stand Up Paddle-surfing final entered the water, contested by Neil Britton (Rossnowlagh), Emmet O'Doherty (Bundoran), John Mc Carthy (Lahinch) and Kieron Black (Down). From the outset it was clear that the final would be a battle between Emmet and Kieron as the other two contestants struggled with the strong offshore wind. Emmet kicked off the final with a solid score matched by Kieron shortly after. While Kieron rode several more waves he did not have a second high score to match Emmet's final wave. Emmet O'Doherty was crowned the first Stand UP Paddle Surfing Champion of Ireland while Kieron settle for second with John Mc Carthy, third and Neil Britton, fourth. {gallery}irishchamp{/gallery} Emmet O'Doherty, "I was riding a C4 Parmenter/Keaulana SUB 10-6. C4 Waterman/Boardworks Demo Day in San Onofre California

Posted 13 weeks ago

Waterfolk, Thanks for attending and making it a very special day; for those that missed it-see ya next time. We had shapely hot and glassy small waves in the ankle to waist high range. The turnout and conditions made this one of our best Demo Days ever! We had a nice local crew turn out including: Chris Koerner, Ron House, Chuck Patterson, Frank Niemeyer and many more. Brian Keaulana flew into town and brought some of his Hollywood buddies including Brooke Burns. Another of Brian’s friends, Nevada State Assemblyman Chad Christiansen paddled for the first time, and was hooked! Former Pro Surfer Pat O’Connell and Transworld Surf’s Jeff Baldwin were killing it on the 9’6”s’ Legend’s Surfshop owner, Jeff Warner was styling in regal fashion on the 12’ Holoholo and the 14’ Vortice. Andre Niemeyer’s performance on the 10’6” Poly board was eye watering, especially his smooth helicopters in the small waves. There was a bit of excitement when a 6’ White Pointer Shark was spotted cruising the inside lineup; local rangers came and checked it out, but no worries… The joy and camaraderie was infectious, again thanks to all for participating. See you next time. Aloha and paddle with respect, Ted Rutherford and the C4 Waterman/Boardworks Crew Some pictures of the day . Hello all, attached are a few pics of a stand up paddleboard demo we did today at San Onofre here in California. This was the best attendance we have had to date at one of our demos. SUP in History - India

Posted 4 months ago

Mark Taylor wrote to us about an ancient form of stand-up paddle boarding he discovered in Goa, India. Mark is deep into a round-the-world surf trip, and has made stops in Peru, Brazil, Portugal, Capetown, J-Bay, and Bali; but he says that the most interesting SUPing he saw was on the beach in Goa. ALL PHOTOS BY MARK TAYLOR "I was looking at the ankle to knee high dribblers and thinking how fun it would be for a SUP if it was 2 feet bigger. Out on the horizon I see a guy paddling along about 1km offshore," Mark begins. When the old die-hard local comes in, Mark rushed down to help pull his board up on the sand– all 200 pounds of it. The local informed him that it's an old practice of fishermen in Goa. Two flattened logs are lashed together with rope, and shaped into a hook at the nose to create rocker. Couple it with a simlarly custom-fabricated paddle, and you have a handmade, all-wood, SUP board. This has allowed the locals to lay lobster traps, net lines, and take fish out of the Arabian Sea for what the local told him was "generations." Apparently the Waikiki beachboys weren't the very first people to think of stand-up paddle boarding! An ingenious use of local materials, in use for "generations". You use what you've got, when you haven't got much. [Link]

Demo Day January 22 at Cardiff Recap

Posted 6 months ago

C4 Waterman/Boardworks Cardiff Reef, South Peak Update Folks, Thanks for coming out to join us yesterday; the weather/tide/cold were ominous, threaten and not very conductive to nice day of sharing waves at the beach; the skies cleared the tide drained and it turned into an A+ day! The photo below of Vince the Great sums it up: {gallery}cardiff/cardiff:400:300:1{/gallery} Click any image for a full-size display of the gallery. The above gentleman came down from LAX (where he is an air traffic controller) early yesterday morning and paddled out in Trunks in 44 degree air and 56 degree water; he surfed for over 6.5+ hours (he was still in the water when we left at 1330) with out a break. His intensity, stoke, and aloha never wavered!!! No one was having more fun! Again, thanks to all the Cardiff Reefers for your aloha. Ted Rutherford Jr. Professional photographer Branmir Kvartuk shot some more really good photos here. [Link]

Vortice XP Video

Posted 7 months ago

{youtube}1QPmTC2LxdM{/youtube} LENGTH: 14' 0" WIDTH: 26.25" BOARD WEIGHT: approximately 20 lbs. DESCRIPTION: The XP “Vortice” is a molded version of the fastest SUP paddleboard we could come up with in 4 years of races in Hawaii, and is intended to be the foundation of a ’stock’ class in the increasing number of races held in the Islands. This ultralight composite racer sports twin concaves running throughout the bottom, which increases both hull speed and stability; up top, the scooped out deck lowers the paddler’s center of gravity while boosting the mechanical advantage of a shorter paddle shaft. The bottom rocker was honed in the gale-torn Molokai Channel, the gold standard of every paddlesport race on Earth. If you’re into racing and want to ‘railroad’ open-ocean swells one after another like you scarf M & Ms, then book a test flight on the XP “Vortice.”

Waterman's Day

Posted 7 months ago

December 10th was a day to remember. The concept was simple: Get the top ASP pros out stand up surfing at Makaha, meanwhile give back to the community. The tricky part was the timing. The day had to be a "lay day" of the Pipe Masters. Long story short, Dec. 10 was the first ever C4 Waterman's Day. Jodi and Liam Wilmott managed to get surfers Mick Fanning, Richie Lovett, Jake Paterson, Pancho Sullivan… to donate their time and their sponsors, Rip Curl, Billabong, Quiksilver… to donate product. Brian Keaulana arranged everything at Makaha Beach, and Todd Bradley, Dave Parmenter and the rest of the C4 Team brought out all the toys. The sun was out and the surf was a perfect 2-3 feet. At one point 25 stand up surfers were in the lineup having a blast. Check out the photos by Allen Mozo of MozoPhoto.com. {gallery}watermansday/AllenMozo:400:300{/gallery} These photos are by Thomas Gaupp of SurfSessionReport.com {gallery}watermansday/surfsessionreport:400:300{/gallery} At the end of the end of the day all the donations were dropped off at Makaha Elementary School where the children had been collecting credits for good behavior. Lynn Okamura writes, "Aloha, friends at C4 Waterman! Mahalo again for dropping off the donations from your surf event to Makaha Elementary School. As predicted, the ROXY pillows "sold out" in two days! The Haleiwa t-shirts are going fast! The kids are thrilled to be able to make their own purchases. "Dad and I had the best day at Makaha with all you legends the other day. It was awesome to meet Brian and see how good you both were out in the water. I was taking notes and cant wait to test some of those moves you guys were doing. Your boards were by far the best that I have ridden and I had the best stand up surf because of this." -Luke Stedman {movremote}http://media.libsyn.com/media/c4waterman/C4canoeHULI.mov{/movremote} Click for more video… Read Jodi's press release… Check out more 500 more photos by Rocco at www.hawaiianswell.com. DK’S C4 WATERMAN SUP SOLUTION

Daniel Kereopa has already established himself as one of New Zealand’s finest surfers. In the past couple of years he has cemented his credentials as a big-wave charger — both paddle-in and tow-in. Further, after a long history of competitive success, he became the first to hold both the NZ shortboard and longboard surfing titles simultaneously. It would be easy to go on, but we can sum things up quickly. When you add up Daniel’s surfing successes it becomes clear that he is not just a very good surfer — he is well on the way to becoming New Zealand’s finest and most comprehensive waterman. [Link]

Sallas Wins Steinlager Shaka Event 5

Posted 9 months ago

Date: Mon, 10 Sep 2007 09:47:47 -1000
Subject: Final event of C4 Waterman Summer Series Wraps Up at Queens
KAI SALLAS TAKES HONORS AT STOP#4 OF THE C4 WATERMAN SUP SUMMER SERIES
Honolulu - (Monday, Sept. 10, 2007) - The fifth and final stage of the C4 Waterman Stand-Up Paddle Surfing competition, as part of the Steinlager Summer Series on Oahu wrapped up over the weekend at Queens, Waikiki, in clean two-foot surf. Four Oahu surfers dominated the competition to take the final spots. Kai Sallas was the winner of the fourth stage, followed by Bonga Perkins, Kamu Auwae, and Scotty Fong Jr. respectively. Despite losing out in the semi-finals, Big Island's Leleo Kinimaka was the top performing surfer after all four of the events in the series.
Seen below, Kai Sallas was in flawless form throughout each round, demonstrating a full spectrum of maneuvers that ranged from lengthy nose-rides to tricky "helicopters", all with full use of the paddle - a critical element of the judging criteria for stand-up paddle (SUP) surfing. As highly established competitive longboarders, all four finalists had the footwork and wave-riding skills to carry them through. But the most important component of SUP surfing is full use and proficiency with the SUP paddle. It isn't enough to stand-up and stroke your way into a wave (easier said than done!). The paddle must remain a functional element of every ride while being instrumental in the execution of maneuvers.
Perkins put up a strong challenge, still riding high on his recent success in the C4 Waterman Invitational as part of the Duke's OceanFest events. Both Perkins and Sallas extracted every ounce of speed out of a sporadic tail-end summer swell that offered the occasional ride to the sand, but more frequently lazed through lulls. Points and prizes aside, the coolest thing about the C4 Waterman/Steinlager Summer Series was watching the growth and development of SUP throughout the summer. Each event enjoyed a higher number of entries than the one before, with every additional competitor pushing the standard of surfing and SUP technique through the roof.
Most impressive was a new generation of super young riders who weren't afraid to take on the established chargers and earn some serious credibility while doing so. The performance of Maui's Slater Trout, 12, and the Oahu Bradley brothers Christian, 17, and Brendan, 15, said much about the capable hands that hold the future of this sport. Trout won his first round heat over the weekend, wowing the crowd with a perfectly executed a helicopter.

Take Part in the Record-Breaking California Paddle for a Plastic-Free Ocean
tom jonesJoin Tom Jones and San Diego Coastkeeper, along with our local sponsors Reef through the Reef Redemption Program, on November 3, 2007 at 9am at the Ocean Beach Pier for a paddle out and beach cleanup to welcome extreme endurance athlete and celebrate the last leg of his 1,250 mile world record-breaking expedition. Tom is traveling on nothing but a 14 foot paddle board to bring awareness to the plastic pollution problem in our ocean. This epic three-month journey is supported by such legendary surfers as Laird Hamilton, Rob Machado, Mickey Munoz, and Jericho Poppler.

The California Paddle is more than just a paddle; it is about drawing world-wide attention to an ever-growing marine debris problem that our oceans face. More than 50 percent of marine debris is made up of plastic; in parts of the Pacific Ocean plastic outweighs plankton by a 6 to 1 ratio. Plastics in our natural environment pose many problems. They are harmful to the marine animals that depend on the ocean; many animals are killed by plastic marine debris through starvation, entanglement and suffocation. no plasticsIn addition, plastics are extremely toxic and as they break down they release many toxins into our ocean and natural environment. Find out more about plastics and how you can be part of the solution to reduce plastic pollution.

The paddle will commence at 9 am, all people-powered vessels are invited to paddle out. Paddlers will be led out to form a healing circle and to welcome Tom as he paddles down to begin the final leg of his voyage. In addition, we will be hosting a beach cleanup in conjunction with the paddle to alleviate some of the marine debris before it reaches the ocean for those who don’t get out in the water. tom jonesWe will provide breakfast, along with local vendors and live music from bluegrass band, Second Delivery. Don’t miss Tom Jones speaking about his record-breaking journey!

Join the thousands of paddlers who have welcomed Tom Jones on various parts of his journey in this once-in-a-lifetime, historic and environmental awareness opportunity. Please contact Danielle Miller for more information or questions about the paddle or cleanup.

In The Lap of Duke Kahanamoku
Duke's OceanFest Celebrations Underway at Waikiki Beach

HONOLULU - (August 21, 2007) - With arms outspread in a gesture of welcome to all, the larger-than-life bronze statue of Duke Kahanamoku on the shores of Waikiki Beach delineates where the pavement ends and the ocean that Duke loved so much, and mastered so well, begins. This week Waikiki will come to life with the annual Duke's OceanFest celebration. If the "father of surfing" were still around today, he'd be honored to see his beloved sport and all its offshoots being practiced and enjoyed by so many.

Among this week's full slate of Duke's OceanFest activities, three of Duke's favorites will be featured: tandem surfing, stand-up paddle surfing, and longboarding. The World Title of Tandem Surfing, presented by Tsunami's Waikiki, the C4 Waterman Stand-Up Paddle (SUP) Surfing Invitational, and the Roxy Jam Honolulu women's professional longboarding championship will run concurrently starting Wednesday, August 22nd, and conclude with the finals of each on Saturday, August 25th.

While there will be the usual points and prizes associated with surfing competitions, the essence of Duke's OceanFest transcends titles.

"When I think of Duke Kahanamoku, I think of someone who was so personable and who willingly shared his knowledge, his abilities and his aloha in a way that represents the heart of Hawaii and what it means to truly be a waterman," says Makaha's Brian Keaulana, who is defending champion of the World Title of Tandem Surfing along with partner Kathy Terada, and will also feature in the C4 Waterman SUP Invitational and paddleboard race.

"One of my favorite memories is of sitting in Duke's lap as a young boy. He was already of an old age at that time and I recall him coming out to Makaha in his white tuxedo suit as a guest at the Makaha International. He influenced so many people in his prime and throughout his lifetime."

Keaulana is just one of a long list of surfers - one that includes his father "Buffalo" Keaulana and many uncles, who were so impressed by Duke's waterman skills and spirit of aloha that they chose to follow in his footsteps.

"There may be competition, but essentially all the different (surfing) sports we do are for relaxation," said Keaulana. "For me, it's about having fun and going out there to challenge myself. What Duke represented was way beyond competition and that's what I try to keep at heart. It's all about a deep sense of balance; physical balance, cultural balance, spiritual balance. That's what surfing is. That's what Duke was all about."

Team Hawaii Aloha Surf

Posted 10 months ago

Congratulations to Team Hawaii-Aloha Surf at the 2007 USLA National Championships! Here's an update from their Captain Michael DuBrule:
Hello again from Myself (Matthew DuBrule) and Team Hawaii - Aloha Surf. We once again competed and completed our Nationals competition for 2007. We managed a Second Place finish in the Chapter "B" Division. This is again a continual improvement for our team. Previous finishes were Sixth in '04, Fourth in '05, Third in '06, and Second this year. The competition was held at Myrtle Beach, S.C. from Aug. 9-11. We advanced several teams into finals of many events and were once again dominant in the Surf-Ski Event sweeping almost all the divisions. Our Main sponsors were MAUI JIM SUNGLASSES, REACTOR WATCHES, PATAGONIA, C4Waterman, and Outrigger Duke K. Foundation.

Our Team MVP was John Flanagan who accumulated some 25 points but in all honesty the event was again a step in the right direction with the
assistance and participation of everyone involved. We scored in events we hadn't even made finals in previously. It certainly was a team effort and I can get you an accurate listing of our Teams performance on an individual basis.

Here's a breakdown of some of the points at this years event in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
There were some 2,500 competitors at the event that covered three days (Aug. 9 - 11).
Our main man, John Flanagan gained a team high 25 points towards our total point accumulation of 135. The B Division was once again won by Smith Point, NY with 157 total points.

The brackets break down into the OPEN DIVISION which is open to anyone and a must for anyone29 and under. It is by far the toughest division and Points are given toplaces 1 - 10. The Age Group Divisions are Split into "SENIORS" and there are two divisions 30 - 34, and 35 - 39. Then come the MASTERS 2 Divisions which are again 5 year increments 40 - 44 and 45 - 49. The VETERANS age groups follow that with the 50 - 54 and 55 - 59. 60 + age competitors are put together as the SUPER VETS.

Individual points winners and/or placings:
