Getting past constant walls of whitewater

Posted 7 years ago

Just looking for some suggestions here. Today was a multi-sport day, I was pretty beat from kiteboarding and decided to take the SUP out after the onshore wind died down to about 15 knots. Our waves are mostly mushy wind chop, today it was about head high with what seemed like 3 second period swells. With the wind and the current ripping, I was able to finally get out after battling constant whitewater for about 15 minutes. But after my first good ride I got stuck inside on the sandbar and just gave up trying to get back out. This happens pretty often since the quality of waves is so poor and it's just constant whitewater. No outgoing rips or reef features etc to help find a channel to get out. Is there anything that can really be done to get out in these kinds of conditions, since you can't really duck dive under the foam? It's not a big deal to get through one or two broken waves, but when it's back to back it seems really difficult or impossible. [Link]

Other forums have it so why not this one, with so many new comers to the sport its a good way to share your wins/losses and SUP adventures. Me, I SUP'd a metro beachy, noticed the swell was a bit stronger than I thought with a little bit of west in it and better timing than forecast, water was beautiful and warm and there was no one out a Dawn. I scouted a bank up the beach and jagged a couple of clean ones before the swell died off and the crowd arrived. One good sized one was so much fun, probably the first good sized wave I have had on the SUP – stoked. [Link]

Small Sunova delamination repair?

Posted 7 years ago

Any helpful hints? Area is a bit smaller than 4 inches by 3 inches on front right hand deck with maybe a quarter of it under the deck pad. Presumably from impact with body or helmet I see some people say drill holes and inject resin…….others say inject gorilla glue [Link]

I think SUP Racing divisions should be based on weight instead of age. This would be far more competitive and likely invite more racers of the larger category . Just thinking out loud. JB [Link]

Are Quickblade paddles still the go-to paddle?

Posted 7 years ago

I'm in the market for a new paddle. Light and good for fitness paddling and the odd race. Several years ago when I bought my last paddle it was pretty much Quickblade or nothing else. Has anything changed since then? Any advice would be great. Cheers. [Link]

It's bloody hot – Don't cook your board!

Posted 7 years ago

Just a quick message to all you board sport lovers out there to watch out for the heat. There has been a string of very hot days recently, and looks like there's more to come. If at all possible, keep your board in a cool well ventilated area during these hot times. If you absolutely can not get your board out of the heat, then I suggest releasing/removing the breather screw (however you absolutely must tighten/replace it before exposing your board to any moisture). Be kind to your board and keep it cool. Ride safe, JB [Link]

New Supper … old surfer

Posted 7 years ago

Hi all Just scored a SUP for xmas … a waterborne evoke 10'6" I surfed a lot over the years … 52 years old now Man it's almost like learning to surf again … I'm ok once on a wave but balance has been tricky especially when paddling with the waves … is there a technique for paddling with the waves as opposed to paddling out ? I seem to have way better balance paddling out and over the waves … all good fun though … and found all new ways of being sore !!! BTW … I'm a goofy footer … mainly surfing right handers so any back hand wave catching tips appreciated Cheers Byrds [Link]

Nambucca Heads

Posted 7 years ago

I'm in Nambucca Heads for a couple of weeks from this weekend. It's a family holiday but I'd like to squeeze in as much sup surfing as I can. Any ideas where I could source a board? Can I hire one locally? could a seabreezer up that way hire/sell me one? I'm 80kg and would describe my surfing as on the beginner side of intermediate. Looking for a board in the 120-160 L range, something fairly stable would be good as I'm still recovering from a sprained knee. Also, any advice on where to surf – or where not to! [Link]

Best way to fix an fcs defreaded screw / plug?:-)

Posted 7 years ago

Hi I am looking for the best – cheapest & easy way of repairing an fcs screw (in an old fcs fin plug) that does not tighten anymore, I really do not want to replace the whole plug as this is a big operation / stress for my board/sup. I have previously read that I can fill the hole with resin and 'retap' it, is this better and what is the cost or who knows how to do it properly etc. thanks ?:-) [Link]

Camelbak

Ok just bought one of these for those longer than usual paddles on the Glide, before I remove the tags does anyone have any opinions in case I have made a huge mistake with this model? I know it's not the SUP specific one seen on the forum before and will not be water proof just resistant and it is designed for Cycling but the straps are light and softer than the Denali models I saw, I can always take it back if it is a real dud!
