Board Classes… Have your say
Not sure if I'm the only one whose noticed this, but every topic about a race recently seems to turn into a discussion on board classes and takes away from the discussion of the event itself. I've been guilty of joining the discussion too at times but have been trying to refrain myself from sabotaging another topic. Take the NSW titles feedback, started out with a huge amount of praise for the event & pics etc and reading some of the current posts its hard to realise its a discussion about that event at all. Yes there's a place there to discuss the race classes offered in that particular event, but I figured its about time (based on the number of people who want to have their say) that we had a separate topic to discuss races classes in general and left the event topics for a discussion of the events themselves. So here's a place to have your say. [Link]

Naish Nalu 10'65" GT or GS
OK, one last question, I think!!! From what I have read and been told by all of you on this forum Naish makes a great product. I am definitely getting the Nalu 10'65". I know the GT is bamboo skinned and GS is not . Is there a difference in the way they paddle or surf, and can you tell me which one might suit me in the future when when my skills get better and why? Also, does the bamboo wrap around the rails on the GT? Cheers, 90 Mile [Link]

Tasmanian Winter Classic (and 2013 state titles)
Well, it's finally confirmed and locked in for Saturday the 22nd June 2013. The event will be held at Scamander Rivermouth and will commence at 9am. Surfing Tasmania will be officiating this sup surf competition and as such all competitors will be judged according to current Surfing Australia guidelines. In the next few days a link will be available to take you from this thread to the entry page at Surfing Tas – alternatively, visit: http://www.surfingaustralia.com/tas/events.php (and keep an eye out for the entry for the Winter Sup Classic.) I have been informed that all competitors will need to join Surfing Tas, at a very reasonable cost of $44 (which gives you a shirt and insurance – very very handy to protect you in the unlikely event of an accident in the surf) ALSO – we have been able to get the actual event entry fee down the a tiny $15 !! So in total the event will cost you only $59 to enter – I can ass… [Link]

helmet wearers.
A professional and famous windsurf coach once mentioned that he avoids windsurfers who wear helmets as they generally seem to assume they are invincible and subsequently lose their awareness of their surroundings and just plow into carves, jumps etc regardless of other water users. After he pointed this out i did start to notice what he meant at popular sailing spots. Worryingly i'm noticing the same is happening with SUP'er when they wear helmets. almost gave a SUP'er helmet a good test today as he carved up the wave into the exact location where i was just pulling off the wave as it was his wave. Missed his head my inches as i forced the back of the board hard into the water to get the nose up . Totally unaware of his surrounding and he could of waited 1 second for me to be clear. So helmets wearer you are not invincible, boards hurt, so remember to look around and be aware. It spoils a day when incidents happen. [Link]

Naish 10' 65 SUP – How big can the rider be?
Can anyone advise me whether a Nalu 10'65 is going to be suitable for me. I weigh 105kgs or 230 lbs at 186cm or 6'1". I have short board surfed for over forty years, done a little SUP'ing but continue to receive conflicting reports about the buoyancy of the Nalu 10'65. I intend to do a bit of wave work but would like a board that will also allow me some time on the flat. I like the look, the feedback and information available about the board but it seems everyone that writes a post on this board anywhere is under 90kg's/198lbs. Is there any larger riders out there with first hand views? [Link]

SUP in Venice
I'm over in Venice for the Vogalonga, a 30km paddle around Venice and the outer islands of Lido, Barano and Murano (another post to come about that). Here's a video of my first time out on the Astro 14' x 26" Race. Perfect board to travel with for flatwater, haven't tied it in a DW, but have a feeling it would perform well. Surprisingly quick for an inflatable. Got some funny looks from the Gondoliers and people on bridges – it would have to be the most interesting and beautiful paddle I have done, very special to paddle under the Rialto Bridge at the end. On the weekend of the Vogalonga, the city opens up the canals to all paddle craft – it's a fantastic event over 7000 paddlers in all craft – gondolas, fishing dorries, rowing shells, kayaks,. This is my first video, so I hope the editing is alright and it isn't too long

Big changes at St Kilda marina.
Yesterday I took some pics. Out with the old… Soon the east side of the marina with its old wood poles and wood pier will be gone.
In with the new… Soon the west side will have a floating concrete marina and they have planted all these steel poles with plastic covers on them.
They are also extending the rock breakwater at each end and they drive four truck loads of rocks onto a barge each time and float the barge to where they put the rocks.
It's taken a few weeks so far and I've heard that they need to get it all done before Sepember because that's when the penguins breed.

PFD's with hydration bladder
A few months ago there was a forum on PFD's for SUP'ing, some wanting hydration bladders built in; I know I'm a bit slow but I have found a mass produced one designed for paddling. If you could buy a PFD specifically designed for SUP'ing what features would you want it to include? Are the existing PFD flexible enough – with the twist and bend action of paddling? What percentage of paddlers wear PFD's? J [Link]

Johnny Stewart had his van stolen with his Lahui Kai Manta 14' on the roof last night. This is the best pic I have of it so far but you should get the idea about the colour scheme. It has a white hull Please keep a lookout for it.
