Billb, thanks heaps for the outstanding site! It is great to find a place with truly independent reviews. I am looking at purchasing a 11′6 C4 Standem as there is a slightly used one close to me for sale. On the review at Ke Nalu it states the Standem has a volume of 137 litres. However, the 11′6 Naish is only 3/4 of an inch wider and has 230L of volume. Is the volume for the Standem incorrect? I am 250 lbs and will certainly need the volume, but the numbers for the standem dont seem quite right. I tried to post this on the Ke Nalu forum, but couldnt figure out how to post there. Please feel free to contact me on my personal email address. Cheers! [Link]

My problem is different from the above…the camera seems to take video and sound without difficulty, but when it is plugged into the USB port of the computer (XP), it turns off and cannot be turned on again until it is unplugged. If I take out the card, the video playback (windows media) works fine. But it will not play from the camera via the USB port. Any ideas?? [Link]

This camera is garbage. It simply won’t recognize any SD Card that I put into the damn thing. Sure, I know that I have to format it to FAT16, but the SD card never shows up at ALL! What a waste of time and money! And the Oregon Scientific tech support BLOWS. They simply repeated what was already in the manual. Thanks!!! [Link]

I am writing from Whangarei, New Zealand. I have the Southpoint Kalama and Bonga Perkins standup boards. I started out with the Kalama model. I bought the Perkins model 3 months later. It has taken me about 6 times out in the surf to get the hang of the Perkins model. It is very tippy in choppy onshore conditions. It is very responsive. You can drop into waves much later than the Kalama, which often nose dives during last second take offs. Nothwithstanding this, the Kalama model is a high performance board as well. It is very responsive. You can turn sharply, carve up and down big waves, lift the front of the board up like a skateboard while dropping down the lip of a wave as it is breaking, etc. It is probably much faster than the Perkins model because of its shear size. The Perkins model is more like a longboard. I often use both boards depending on the conditions. I tend to use the Perkins board in low tide conditions. Both boards are so much fun to ride. [Link]

Thanks for all the suggestions. I was out for my second sail off Dana Point in whitecap conditions. I have the new rudder but under heavy load on port tack the boat wants to come up into the wind. I picked up an AI. in Annapolis last week. I sailed it back from the dealer in 20 knots of wind. It did good - except down wind. Because of the missing boom it just flutters. When you pull it in it naturally turns up wind. After the 5th circle I furled and peddled until I could get a better point of sail. There is a web site that recommends a barber haul rigged to the amas. I was thinking of a wisker pole rigged with the paddle. Have you had similar experience? [Link]

Hello Bill,
THanks for sponsoring this site. Couple of quick questions. When will the SUP comparison be posted? I am trying to decide between the Naish 11′6
and the Admundson 11′3. I surf and windsurf so want the windsurfing option. I am just learning SUP and want a beginner friendly board to teach others and tandem. The Admundson looks to have a lot of great features, built in eva deck and paddle guard. THe Naish looks extremely thick which could be good for me my weight 210lbs 6′2height, but maybe harder to handle in the waves. The Admundson looks thinner which could be more responsive in the waves but perhaps more tippy or less floaty?
ANy help is appreciated. YL [Link]

hey ho bill: did you get a chance to ride the starboard 11-2 ultimate blend? i’ve been wondering if it might be everything the jimmy11 plus more and wondered if you would agree w/ what john hibbard on the starboard forum says about the two, to wit: “The 11′2″ UB is a totally different Beast when compared to the JL 11′… The tail is a lot thinner and narrower. The 11′2″ feels smaller than it is. The length helps with its flat water glide. If you had an 11′2″ I don’t think you’d use your JL again. The length is similar, but the application and ability of the board is totally different.” on another subject: have you thought about opening up the individual SUP pages on the showcase to comments from readers? I read somewhere on one of the blogs that Starboard made a board using the Ku Nalu for the mold. What model did that become in the Starboard line? If you tested it, how did it compare to your original? My use priority is: flat water glide, windsurfing, and then surfing. I live 8 hours from the coast and 2 minutes from a lake. [Link]

there’s no problem with long posts, if you look at the SUP 101 postings you’ll see some that go on for pages–it’s all good. I prefer to answer questions online so everyone can gain. Wow, $750-$850 for the board, paddle and bag is FREE. I don’t think i could beat that deal buying direct from Jimmy. Is that the new JL paddle? if so, it’s Quickblade blade and his own shaft. I haven’t tried it myself, but I saw Jimmy using it in some nice big waves the other night at Kanaha. Looked pretty good, though the big Peahi blade he had doesn’t work for me with my dodgy shoulders. You can’t go wrong with either board. I really enjoyed the Naish, haven’t tried it in bigger waves, but I suspect it’s great. the JL surfs great, it just takes a few sessions to understand the mechanics. the squash tail makes it fast. the only guys that don’t like them are the ones that either don’t like to move around on the board, or never replace the fin. the lack of glide isn’t that big a deal, in fact i tend to use my JL for upwind/downwinders (paddle against the prevailing wind direction until it picks up, then turn around and return) just because it’s a better workout. I use my Starboard 12′6″ for real downwinders because if I was slow my buddies would beat me back to the car and drink all the beer. the Naish has better glide, but that’s because it’s a little narrower and more of a pintail. That also makes it a little tippier, especially when you step to the back of the board to turn it in front of a wave. [Link]

Thanks Bill. I am a decent surfer so the JL sounds good - I ride Harbours, Cooperfishes and Tylers with some proficiency - not a lot, but some! Harbours have full rails and tend to be very glidey while my Coop has superpinched rails and is fast, the Tyler has a boatload of concave and pinched 50/50 so it is slow and technical. I do want to use the SUP on flat water a good bit though and the lack of glide with the JL is a bit worrisome - is it hard to get into waves with it because of this? I expect not. The deals are these: The Naish for $950 with a pad, the JL for between $750 and $850 with pad, paddle and bag. I do not care about the windsurfing really… Just comes down to the glide (do I need it) and surfability I guess. Thanks so much. I am really looking forward to your comparisons. I wish they were out now - I might go for something else if there were a board that was more stable, had more glide and surfed easier than the JL. Of course, I wouldn’t get that deal… J (Sorry to post such a blog hog personalized note here but I couldn’t seem to find a contact email for you - maybe just a bit blind!) [Link]

Actually, of the three boards, the JL 11 is the easiest to ride and the floatiest. You wouldn’t think so from the dimensions, but it’s true. we didn’t get to test the southpoint, so i can’t comment on it. both the Naish and the JL are excellent boards. I weigh 245 and own a JL 11er (among others). One of my all time favorite boards. I’m also a longboarder with shoulder problems. The last time i paddled a longboard was eight months ago. I paddle a longboard for day and my back hurts for two, but I SUP almost every day. My shoulders hurt every night, but I can pop out of bed and do it again the next morning. Longboarding is sprint exercise, SUP is core plus aerobic plus sprint. Most people lose a couple of belt sizes the first few months. The JL surfs well once you get used to it. You have to ride the rails, and then it’s fast, and kind of loose. If you get it, use the huge fin for the first week, then get something smaller, like a 10.5 Faberow flex. the big limitatiion of the JL is that it has no glide–it goes as far as you paddle it, then slows quickly. the Naish has more glide. If you really plan to wavesail, then you want the Naish, if you want an intro board that is very stable and surfs well, get the JL. the Naish is actually a little tippier. You should try all three if you can and see what you like best. I know lots of longboarders who said they’d never switch to SUP except for small waves and flat water. Never lasts. It’s just more fun catching and riding thirty waves an hour than five, and surfing anywhere instead of just a few reachable breaks. I swore I’d never sup bigger waves–who wants to be tied to an aircraft carrier when the green room closes on your head. I was out yesterday in overhead sets at Kanaha. Never even thought of going home for the longboard. Sup is extremely seductive. [Link]

Wow. This is going to be great. I have about three good deals available to me and would love to hear the comparisons. I am 205#, 6-1 and am an intermediate prone surfer (longboards and midranges). I also have had several back, shoulder and neck injuries which limit me a bit. The three boards available to me at a good price are: 11-0 Jimmy Lewis All-Arounder (11-0, 4.4″, 30″), 11-6 Naish (11-6, 4.5″, 29.75″), and the 11-6 Southpoint Kalama Timpone (11-6, 4.5″, 28 7/8″). The Lewis is the best deal financially by far, but it is also the shortest of the three (Foatiest: Naish, then Kalama, then Lewis). I certainly like to save money but I do not want to start out on something hard and if the extra half foot is going to make a big difference then I will look at the other boards. The full length single concave of the Timpone is intriguing. I am a fan of pintails (Naish - V tail), but for a board this size I wonder if the squash/square (more drive out of the turn) makes more sense than the smoother turning, better down the line drive of a (rounded) pin. I am thinking I will use this more as a flat water/extremely small wave rider, as I am a prone surfer and love that. That said, who knows? Maybe I fall i love with it. But if that happens I will probably pick up a much higher performance board at that point. The Naish is also a windsurfer and has a mast track and a handle built in (I am a sailor but not a windsurfer - might be fun to have the option) Any advice is appreciated. Sorry for the long post! bill: you are totally living the life, aren’t you? meanwhile, a thought about the upcoming event. would it make sense, do you think, to offer up some board as a basis of comparison for the testers? iow, if, say, the jimmy11 is the center line for various elements (stability, glide, surfability, etc), then the other boards could be viewed as + or - that centerline. obviously, for this to work, the guy would all have to spend some time on the jimmy but at the very least, if it worked, the idea could spit out some interesting numbers — especially if it worked out that the various element numbers actually fell into meaningful groups instead of all over the damn place. also, it’d make it easy for the guys to complete quick evals — just write in some numbers, maybe an overall impression, and off you go, bob’s your uncle.
anyway, just thought i’d toss that in at the last minute. [Link]

Dw–it would be kind of nice if I DIDN’T do that. But I know what you mean. At 200 pounds the 10′6″ would be really cool. I think it will be fine for me if I make 220. Bob–I’m trying to talk Jimmy into putting in at least some strong inserts like the Starboard has. Truth is I think you could add them to any board but it might be too hard on the deck without reinforcement. The track that Ding King put in my JL seems bulletproof, but it’s a big job. [Link]

I loved reading this. It is so great to hear you’re going through the exact same thing I experienced my first day on the JL 10. At 200 lbs the JL 10 is too small for me, but it blew my mind and changed everything I thought I knew. It was the board that sent me on a several month long SUP buying frezzy in seach of the magic board for MY WEIGHT. I could not wait for the new JL sizes, I had expereinced the 10 footer and knew the stoke. Nothing I had ridden before was good enough anymore. I tried to get by riding the 10 footer for about 6 weeks, but gave up and started buying SUPs faster than a kid in a candy store. [Link]

bill: i certainly am glad to hear you are continuing to work on lowering your maturity level. i’m right there with you. hmmmm — toes just a few inches past the balance point? man, i don’t know what gives, but for me that’s just too far back. i’m way up there. same with the starboard. i’d guess i’m somewhere about 2/3 of the way up. had some guy tell me the other day that it looked like i was standing too far forward. this was on the 12-6. i told him it might look like that … and then i caught the next wave, no pearling. one thing i know i need to do is work on my paddling strength. more of that would help me out a lot. afternoon update: just got back from 1.5 hrs in the water. stood further back on the board than i did yesterday — and caught twice as many waves. go figure. thanks bill! Trust me, I’ll be all over any board that can remotely hold me. I want to try as many as I can. If you think I’m going to have all these toys here and not play with, you’re greatly overestimating my maturity and discipline. My toes are not a long way past the balance point, probably just a few inches, and yes, I switch to a surfing stance when I start paddling hard to catch a wave. I’ve seen guys do it both ways, but that’s easiest for me. Drawing a line on the balance point is a good idea. When I longboard I draw a line with wax where my nose should be. Otherwise I tend to get too far back. [Link]

bill: so when you’re paddling for a wave, you’re pretty much always starting off in surf stance? i’ve got to give that a go. i’ve been going parallel except for those times when i knew i was gonna pearl cause the wave was about to pitch on top of me; in a few instances a quick switch to surf stance allowed me to pop the pearling nose back to the surface before it was too late. mostly, though, i’d eat it.
can you guestimate for me how far back from the nose your forward toes are?
once i found the sweet spot on the 12-6, i Sharpy’d a line across the pad so a quick look’ll tell me if i’m in position or not. it’s proved to be pretty helpful (if a little kookfull too).
one thing about the upcoming boardathon that i’m not happy with is that you’ll probably be too busy running it to try out the SUPS yourself. from your past writing, i’ve come to trust your judgement and have found it incredibly helpful. my hope is that you’ll see some that are of obvious interest to you and that you’ll make time to jump on ‘em and momentarily hand off the busywork to your bro. So here’s the thing with the Jimmy Lewis, the small amount of nose rocker absolutely makes it prone to pearling if you’re too far forward. What I do is catch the wave with my feet in a surfing stance but not widely separated so I can keep weight forward to catch the wave easily. with weight forward the JL catches waves extremely well, as you know. As soon as the board is in the wave I take a big step back with my rear foot and lean into the bottom turn (whichever way I’m turning). Lately I’ve added putting the rear foot toward the back rail during that big step if I’m going backside. When you do that it never pearls and you’re in a great position to maneuver. I don’t go all the way to a stinkbug squat, but I have a lot of weight on my rear foot and I’m leaning back. The first day out when we got back to Maui I drove straight down like a lawn dart into the reef on an overhead wave with the JL. I had forgotten about the step back, or just froze like a scared possum, one or the other. I haven’t pearled since, and I can catch waves easier with the JL than the Starboard so far. In fact I find myself wailing away after some absurd knee-slapper on the Starboard just because I know I can catch it with the Jimmy. You’re absolutely right about the fin, I curse it when I’m turning. You have to be way back on the board and even then you need to herc it around. I’m going to swap to something skinnier. I’m getting a decent backside worked out. Now my problem is when I get either board turning backside, I have my ass hanging out so far I have a hard time getting back to reverse the turn. I did a backside turn so tight on the Jimmy two days ago that I shot back through the top of the wave. Too bad, it was a nice one, I had big plans for that wave but I U-turned right out of it. just got back in after 2.5 hrs with the jimmy in nice lined-up 3′ surf. i caught a fair number of waves (and had one 40 minute period where i couldn’t catch a thing) and had a pretty great time. problem was, i couldn’t find the board’s sweet spot to paddle from. i was either an inch too far forward and pearled or an inch too far back and missed the wave. guess we’ll have to differ on this one, bill: i think the starboard’s sweet spot is pretty easy to find and it works well, at least for me, in both mushy and steeper situations.
in this regard, i think the starboard’s kicked-nose helps a lot to keep pearling to a minimum. the jimmy’s nose, otoh, is almost flat as a board and tends to dig in quickly if you’re too far forward; i.e, it’s not very forgiving, imo.
for sheer surfability, though, i think the jimmy has it all over the 12-6. especially backside. i actually had fun on the rights today (i’m a goofyfoot) and even got in a little drop knee action (or at least i think i did; someone looking at me probably saw something else entirely).
the stock jimmy 13″ fin is great for stability but i missed a whole bunch of waves because i couldn’t come around fast enuf. i think i’ll put the ol’ dewey weber 13″ hatchet fin on; it’s just got a lot less surface area.
well, that’s the latest on this end. over and out ….
(please excuse all typos and other infelicities; as usual, i’m too pooped to proof read…) [Link]

I surfed both the Jimmy and the Starboard today, definitely very different boards with different strengths. It was choppy and windy with confused waves that were hard to read the peaks of. I just got some thrusters for the Starboard so I was anxious to try it, but conditions were tough enough as it was, so I used the Jimmy. As far as stability in the rough stuff and surfing, for I guy with my weight and skill level it’s as good as I’ve found. I stayed out about two hours, including putting my new helmet cam on to go video some surfing canoes. After the wind died I went and got the Starboard, and it was fine in the calmer conditions. I think it surfed better with the thrusters, but I’m not sensitive enough to the variations to say for sure. Conditions were too different to compare one day to another. But I did discover that I can’t do backside turns very well on the Starboard. I asked several of the experienced surfers what I was doing wrong. they said I needed to step back further, get my rear foot closer to the inside rail, and get some hip into the turn. So far that’s a recipie for falling off, but I’ll work at it. By comparison, I can slide the nose of the Jimmy back across the wave to the backside very easily. I’m not carving that turn, but I get done what i want to do. Frontside turns are easy with both boards, but again, the Jimmy does it quicker and cleaner. Let me know what you find out. I think the JL 11er is one of those boards that we’ll all outgrow, then grow back into, then outgrow, then grow back into. It does a lot of things well. [Link]

I make myself move around a lot on any board I’m on, but when I paddle to catch a smallish wave I move way forward, especially if I think I might not make it. For the big honkers I move back a little and as soon as I get into the wave and start the drop I lean back to get the nose up and start the turn. I’m probably ahead of where you’re talking about when I’m paddling hard. I have to say that the Starboard is still a lot harder to catch waves with than the JL11er–for me anyway. Even though it goes faster and accelerates better. You have to be positioned just right on the board, and there’s a lot of board to move around on. The pointed nose is probably great for maneuverability, but I can’t move very far forward on the board to accelerate. a great all around board, and I’ll use it a lot for downwinders and cruising. The 11er remains my go-to board. I’m just stuck on it. As anyone that sees my jeep running around in Maui could tell you, the JL is a permanent fixture on it. It’s not the best for cruising, for sure, and it doesn’t turn well until you learn to lean on it, it takes technique to make it paddle straight, and it tends to wobble in surf until you learn to set a rail, but once you’ve overcome those obstacles and learned to ride it, it’s a wave catching machine. I think when I learn to surf better I might move away from it more, but it makes cutbacks and bottom turns so easy, I have my doubts that I’d ever retire it. And even a grunion like me can get up on the nose and move around when it’s in the wave. [Link]

wow, bill, thanks a whole bunch for that fin suggestion. i took out the puny fin i had on the 12-6 and put in a fat 10″ Hobie fin and it was like night and day, the difference from my dismal experience of a week ago. iow, i caught a ton of waves. btw/ i have 3.25″ thrusters on there and am not sure i need them now. did you buy a pair and try em out? also: i realized today that i’ve been standing way too far back on the board. for whatever reason, i’d been locked on to those center-line diamond cut-outs in the pad as the approximate place to stand. but when i started moving forward on the board, i also started sliding into waves much much easier — and a lot further out. i just went out and measured my new fav position. from the nose of the board back to the front of my booties, it’s 58″; and from the front of the carry-thingy insert to the front of the booties, it’s about 17″. Zat about where you and Bob are doing it? [Link]

Does snowboarding descirbe that sport? Skis are boards on your feet ridden on snow. People already know “surfing” means prone surfing. No surfer ever says he is going paddle surfing, so paddle surfing is not associated with prone surfing. It doesn’t take long for terms to catch on and become the offical name associated with that activity. Usually the name that sticks, is the one we end up with. We all called windsurfing, windsurfing, even though technically we all knew it was a board brand. Eventually the the name stuck, regardless of lawsuits. Many tried to PUSH sailboard on us, but you can’t fight it, if the people call it something else. People tried to push kiteboarding on us because people can do it on flat water. Marketers wanted a name that would allow the sport to grow on lakes. It failed, the sport is known as kitesurfing. [Link]

the problem with a name like “Paddle Surfing” is that it’s not a clear identifier. It works in the context but not alone. Everyone paddle surfs (they just use their hands to do it) and paddle boards already exist, as surfboards designed only to paddle. That’s why people added standup to the name. And presto, for clear writing you’re back to Standup Paddle Surfing aka SUP. Windsurfing suffered a long identity crisis, rescued only by lawsuits and protected names. People used to call it Sail Boarding but that was a trademark. I still tend to call it sailboarding. The other cool thing we can do with these board is stick a sail on them and get into big waves. Right now it’s called Longboard Wavesailing or SUP Wavesailing. Yikes. [Link]

I too think SUP sounds like one more acronym that must stand for some ridiculous, boring, or needless program created by a committee of government bureaucrats trying to hide the true meaning of their screw the taxpayer program. Okay, so that may be a bit over stated, but certainly we can give this energizing sport more life than a three letter acronym. So what do we call it in our own lives? When I am leaving the house and headed for flat-water on the bay, I say: “By Honey, I am going to go paddle.” If I am headed for the beach with the SUP, I say: “I am going to go paddle-surf.” If I am trying to describe the sport to someone who has never heard of it, I call it: “standup paddle boarding” and then have to explain that I stand on a long wide surf board and paddle it with a long canoe paddle. They look at me a bit strange until I explain the benefits of standing up and not laying prone in the water; and that it is a natural extension of other paddle sports like canoeing and kayaking. So, I think the operative words are of course standup and paddle. Personally, I like all the attempts that give credit to Hawaiian culture. The problem is that I can’t remember the longer phrases like Ku Ku Hoe which Infiniti has trademarked, and I think I have seen something worse like Ku Ku Hoe Ke Nalu out there. I can remember a short phrase like Ku Nalu or Ke Nalu but those both belong to someone as well. Is there a short Hawaiian word or phrase for standup or one for paddle that could be kept universal? I think you’re right about this sport needing a more attractive name. As surfers we have categorized our styles based on our equipment. We essentially have short boards and long boards. How about we call these Ultra Boards? The sport would then be called Ultra Boarding. Kind of like hair gel, there’s regular, extra, super and ultra. I never knew which was stronger, super or ultra. It doesn’t matter anymore as there isn’t enough hair on my head to matter. My wife suggests that because of ancient times when only the chief would paddle and ride standing up, the name retain this kingly quality by incorporating King, Crown or Chief in the name. I can’t come up with anything that pops. I do think we should stay away from controversial terms like water boarding. [Link]

I know, I did some big days at Kenaha last year toward the end of our six month stint here, and lived through the occasional thrashing. You do get used to it and I stopped struggling to get to the surface and relaxed–even this time I didn’t do anything goofy like try to swim up through a wave. My big mistake was thinking I could come back after an eight month layoff and start where I left off just because I’ve been paddling in flatwater with the occasional session bouncing around in the Oregon surf. When I looked up at a ten foot face (haole measure) I suddenly realized I wasn’t really ready for it. Bad timing. I’ll get back to that level, hopefully soon. I love those big thumpers. I standup paddled Kanaha the last 3 days. I ride a 8′4″ standup and feel very comfortable on the board out there in the solid surf we have been having. Dont feel bad your not alone. I took some beating several times each day. being dragged and dragged. Today decided to try to get some video from my pocket video cam. Several sets took me out on the inside. But i was determined to get a bit of video. The sets were no where to be found. So i waited and waited. All of a sudden i saw everyone outside scramble. standup guy stayed laying down and paddled for the horizon. I saw their movement and did the same. Saw the set of the day looming and peaking as it got closer. I scratched and scratched and was going to make it by the skin of my teeth. was climbing up the face as it was pitching and the lip started the feather and i had about 5 feet to make it and was denied. The wave stripped the board out of my hands dragged the shit out of me snapped my leash and sent me swimming to the lagoon to find my board and still be late for work. Dont feel bad about the floggings its part of it. You will start getting used to it and come up laughing and charged to get one of those. Start in the inside peak on the right at kanaha. or a great other option is Kahului harbor. very user Fridley and fun. needs to be a big north swell. Sunday could be good. Dont be deterred by kanaha come back out and try it from another angle. It will come together and become comfortable the more you expose yourself to it. [Link]

Linter,
I bet you’ve got a little fin on the Jimmy. Stick the original huge one back on and try it. Mega stability. And now that you know how to paddle, you won’t have trouble turning it. I did that yesterday and was astonished at the difference. I’ve been falling off a lot in the side chop. With the monster fin back in place I don’t fall at all. Could be that I’m getting my sea legs back (what a disappointment to suck so bad the first few days). I’m pretty sure this will be a yearly deal. Might try to expand it into a public demo thing if the board manufacturers like the idea. [Link]

It?s nice to have PonoBill back in Maui! The all aluminum tour was interesting and all, but I really enjoyed learning about SUP and the other Maui leisure activities here on this blog. I tried to arrange my schedule to get to Maui to be a tester for the Board and Paddle showcase, but I have too many work commitments to get away. Perhaps I can do it in ?09 if there is a repeat Bill. For linter, let me add that I own a JL 11 and have paddled the Starboard 12?6? and don?t find the JL that much less stable, and it is an excellent surfer. My brother owns the Mistral Pacifico. Its? stability is more similar to the Starboard and it catches waves easily. Perhaps that is an alternative to consider for someone looking for a very stable board for surf. In the end, I think a lot of us will own at least two boards. For me that?s the JL 11 for surfing and another for distance paddling or other activities like sailing and fishing. [Link]

bob: i tried as best i could to get out there. men’s journal thought a story about the SUP revolution would end up being too much of a lifestyle thing. i tried to argue but to no avail. then, for a brief shining moment, i took on an assignment to profile laird hamilton; but the mag’s big-picture concept for the piece started heading in directions that don’t play to my strengths, so i gave it back. finally, i was offered a kelly slater profile … but that got blown out of the water when he showed up on the cover of outside. sheesh. but, hey, that’s life in the big minor leagues.
wish i could get out there, though. i can’t tell you how jealous i am. in fact, the whole thing so upset me that i went out and ordered an infinity otter-tail paddle to make myself feel better. got it yesterday. am hoping for waves on thursday. if they come, i hope you get some too! [Link]

I’m so jealous. I’ve been slammed with work getting ready to get out there with you and I’ve had a real nasty cold. I haven’t been on my board in a week and a half other than in my dreams. Have I told you that I can’t wait to get out there? You have no idea how much I need this. If it takes you 3 minutes it’ll probably be 5 for me…:(. Hey be ready for some board sailing too. Sue and I both want some pointers. Linter, I was hoping to hear that you managed to get an article about SUP and headed out for the test. I like the looks of some of the shorter but still wide boards out there. I’m always going to need the width I’m afraid. Not just because of my head but also because of my fat ass. Christian…….how are you! Awesome that you are going to be in Maui. Funny that I’ll finally get to meet you 6,000 miles from home. I’m the guy that almost bought your wetsuit….:) . I also know a friend of your’s. Mike from Manchester…a.k.a..ECSUP… He bought the Charity auction paddle. In fact we are hooking up this Sunday when I deliver the paddle. Hopefully we’ll get on the water too. Looks like Sat. Sun might be good. He’s going to be talking to you about getting involved in a charity paddle event this summer.
BTW…congrats…my wife says you have one of the most beautiful little girls she’s ever seen. We are just starting to plan a paddle from P-town to Plymouth to raise $ for some of the charities fighting plastic pollution. Long trip but it should be a fun time. Damn I’m going to need to train for this! I have some good connections that I’m hoping to enlist and Mike is stoked. Hope you’re interested. See you on Maui…..yeehaaa! [Link]

I really enjoy the JL 11′ and the 12′ Laird. I’ve also ridden the JL 11′7″ but don’t like it all. JL is coming out with two smaller versions of the 11′ and two bigger versions of the high performance 10′ as well as one smaller version. It also looks like he is doing a 12′ gun and a 12′6″ one design distance board. Check out the catalog at http://surfingsports.com/jimmy_lewis_2008_catalog/index.html Do you need any more testers for the Board and Paddle Showcase? The family and I will be escaping the cold Nantucket winter for a month in Maui starting February 9th! Can’t wait to get in the water for lots of fun… [Link]

I’m pretty high in the Starboard 12′ 6″ too, I love how it cruises. I don’t have one here yet. If I get one it will be the THIRD one I’ve bought, and that seems just ridiculous. For now the only boards I have are the JL11er, the 11′7″ which I really bought as a longboard for fat guys who lumber to their feet (you call that a POP) and the Ku Nalu. I need to get my sea legs back before I start using the Ku Nalu again–it’s demanding, but it rocks. I’ve been sticking with the Jimmy because it’s so comfortable and easy to use. Still a great board. I’m looking forward to seeing what Jimmy has in store for next year. As far as I know Starboard is going to be participating, I’m excited to try some of their new designs. right now we have about ten manufacturers who have said yes, all of them stellar designers. I’m sure I;’m going to fall in love with way too many boards. [Link]

nice write-up, bill, and i’m glad to see that you’re back in hawaii and having a good time and working on the upcoming evaluation or showcase or whatever it ends up being! meanwhile, i gather you’ve been spending most of your sup time on the jl11. i’ve put my own jl11 on the backburner in favor of the starboard 12-6, because of my balance issues; but one thing i’m hoping that comes out of the showcase is that we find a board that’s more stable than the JL11 but that also surfs about the same or better. i love the starboard but it is one big beast on the waves. still, i currently prefer it for its other attributes. Been running pretty much non-stop since we got back to Maui. I have this frantic feeling that if I don’t spend enough time in the water, then I’m going to really suck when we do the Board and Paddle Showcase. It’s not as if I really think I’m going to become a good surfer in [...] [Link]

Bill,
Aloha, and thanks for the great blog! You have definately provided a great source for all paddlers. I am currently makng a few paddles and have emailed your brother. He suggested contacting you for the board test. I am active duty navy and just need some info on the dates so I can take some leave (as long as Uncle Sam doesn’t need me)! I’d be willing to paddle, do admin, and well whatever for the sake of scientific paddle research! Uhh, I mean paddle in Maui when I should really be at work!! Just drop me a line.
Thanks,
Scott Grier [Link]

Sam is as nervous as a cat. Whenever we bring his crate up from the basement he stays even closer to Diane than usual–which is not that easy for a dog that spends his life ten inches from her knee. I think he’s concerned about being left behind. I can’t blame him–the weather in Portland [...] [Link]

I’m thinking maybe a couple of camelbacks? Or maybe a cache somewhere mid trip. I’ll tell you, anyone that has ever flipped for bass or fished the kelp line has to be looking at these SUP thingies and saying HMMM. For that matter I wouldn’t mind running one down the Deschutes and fishing for some Redsides. [Link]

More live? Ah well, you get the idea. The official date for www.Kenalu.com e-zine going live is February 25th, but I’m placing a lot of content on the site and adding a lot of features. One of the neatest is the photo upload form. If you have any cool SUP photos you’d like to share [...] [Link]

For the days that I can’t get on the water I’ll hit the treadmill for a bit to get the blood flowing. I used Youtube to create a playlist of SUP vids to watch to remind me why I’m running in place in my living room. [Link]

Hey Guys. I stumbled on this site when I was feeding my Jones for racing (Hi Bill). I’ve been a whitewater kayaker for a long time and we’ve got a cousin to your stand up surfing called “striding”. It was invented by a fella named Jeff Snyder whose from Maryland. Basically it’s whitewater kayaking while standing up! Here’s a link to a picture:
http://www.americanwhitewater.org/content/River_detail_id_3192 I’ve been on the Upper Yough (Class IV-V) on Mothers Day when Jeff came striding by (standing) while taking his Mom on a tour of the river. She sat calmly in the front of the boat as he effortlessly ran class IV-V water. What a site! Anyway … thanks for the site Bill. See you at the track. -Kyle [Link]
