A full day of action here at Day 2 of the Huntington Beach Pro

It was a full day of action here at Day 2 of the Huntington Beach Pro, as the Main event got underway and a new swell turned up to make it a day to remember. Clean head high conditions rolled in for much of the day, as the World’s best took to the water to battle it out here in Surf City USA.

Kai Lenny (Naish) opened his event campaign with a flawless performance in Round 1, clearly making his intentions know at this 3rd stop on the 2013 World Championship Tour. Kai will be back in action tomorrow in heat 3 of the 3rd Round at 8am PST.

Ian Vaz (Art in Surf) wowed the judges with his full rail and explosive surfing, making it directly through to Round 3. His brother, Caio (Art in Surf) similarly put on a strong performance here in the opening round of the Main Event.

As expected, Leco Salazar, 2012 World Champion put on a strong performance in the opening round, as he comes off a win at the last stop in Brazil and continues his campaign to defend his 2012 World Title. However, it was not without its challenges, as he faced an on form Matheus Salazar, once again clearly showcasing that surfing talent does run in the family.

Other standouts from the day included Zane Schweitzer (Starboard), who put on an impressive display of performance surfing just south of the pier, as did Mo Freitas (Rogue SUP/Body Glove), Kody Kerbox (Naish) and Justin Holland (Starboard). Also standing out were Alexis Deniel from France, Colin Mcphilips from right here in Southern California and Beau Nixon (Naish) from Australia, all winning their first round heats to advance directly to the 3rd round.

The repehage saw more close action, as the athletes battled it out for their last chance to make it back into the game, as standouts included the Australians Jackson Close (JP Australia) and Keahi de Aboitiz (JP Australia), but also with great performances by Airton Cozzolino (Fanatic), Matheus Salazar and Eric Miyakawa (Art in Surf).

In the women’s division, strong performances from Caroline Angibaud, Candice Appleby, Iballa Moreno (Starboard) and Aline Adisaka saw them winning their first round heats to advance through to round, not to mention the young Izzy Gomez (Starboard) who put on a great display at Huntington Beach. Meanwhile in the repechage, it was Vanina Walsh (Starboard) who stole the show, posting some of the higher scores of the day. Round 3 has some exciting match ups, so make sure to tune in live to: http://watermanleague.com/events/2013-huntington-beach-pro/ to watch it all unfold

Last but not least, the Huntington Beach wildcard, Daniel Hughes made his presence felt in his first round heat, advancing alongside the Current Ratings leader and 2x World Champion Kai Lenny (Naish). Definitely someone to watch out for here at Huntington Beach.

A lot more action to come today from the Huntington Beach Pro Grand Slam, as we get underway with the 3rd round of both Women’s and Men’s competition. Stay tuned to: http://watermanleague.com/events/2013-huntington-beach-pro/
