First-Time Event Supports University of Hawai’i Cancer Center

O’AHU, HAWAI’I – Pre-registration continues for the Xcel Race Against Skin Cancer presented by the University of Hawai’i Cancer Center, a standup paddle race Saturday, February 9 benefiting skin cancer awareness.

A fast sprint along O’ahu’s Waikiki shoreline, the short-course race from Kaimaina Beach to just beyond Fort DeRussy is designed to encourage paddlers of all levels to come out and support the cause.

The first-time event is the latest initiative in the ongoing partnership between Xcel and the UHCC to fight skin cancer in Hawai’i and beyond. All event proceeds benefit the UHCC, which celebrates its new world-class, 150,000 square foot Cancer Center grand opening in late February. Free skin cancer screenings, open to all, will be given at the finish line by the Hawai’i Skin Cancer Coalition.

All race finishers receive automatic entry into the event’s random prize drawing at the finish line, with prizes including:

  • A 2-night, ocean view stay at the Parc Waikiki hotel
  • iBlowfish inflatable surfboard and SUP paddle by C4 Waterman
  • SUP board by Surftech
  • North Shore surf/SUP guided day tour and personal surf/SUP video package courtesy of Ty Gurney Surf School and 83 East Video Productions
  • Sunglasses from Maui Jim
  • Prize packs and gift certificates from Island Sole, Kona Red, and Vertra

Always a good time, C4’s multi-paddler SUPsquatch inflatable SUP will also make an appearance.

Presented by the UHCC, the Xcel Race Against Skin Cancer is made possible through the generosity of event sponsors, including the Friends of the University of Hawai’i Cancer Center, Standup Paddle Magazine, the Parc Waikiki hotel, C4 Waterman, Surftech, Kona Red, Vertra, Island Sole, Ty Gurney Surf School, and 83 East Video Productions.
