Ed Wheeler’s S.I.C. Standamaran Race SUP

2013-hawaii-paddleboard-championship-dukes-race-23

I caught up with Ed Wheeler at the 2013 Duke’s OceanFest where he raced his SIC Standamaran. Ed got his first test ride when I got mine a month or so ago and he was blown away by the glide and how much easier it is on the body. Judging from his recent race finishes, he’s getting the hang of it pretty quick. Continue reading ‘Ed Wheeler’s S.I.C. Standamaran Race SUP’

SIC Standamaran Race SUP – After 3 years it’s finally here!

sic-standamaran-race-sup-7

When Mark Raaphorst first told me about the SIC Standamaran in 2010, I knew I had to try it out so I flew from Oahu to Maui and got a chance to test the first version on a South Shore Kihei downwinder. The Kihei downwind conditions were amazing. It was like the best Hawaii Kai run I’ve been on with wind directly at my back, making it feel like a train ride. It was super fun. The V1 Standamaran felt really light weight and it was the first time I was able to comfortably paddle a SUP upwind. Even though the flat platform in the middle would drag when catching larger bumps, I still wanted one so I put in an order. Seven versions later I finally got one! Introducing the SIC Standamaran Version 8. Continue reading ‘SIC Standamaran Race SUP – After 3 years it’s finally here!’

Blue Planet 9′0″ x 29″ Rockn’ Roller SUP Surfboard

blue-planet-9-0x29-rockn-roller-sup-surfboard-1

I recently did a demo of the Blue Planet 9′0″ x 29″ “Rockn’ Roller” stand up paddle surfboard. The board is able to float a rider up to 220 lbs but the caveat is that if you’re over 200 lbs your balance needs to be really good, especially if your conditions are choppy. S.I.C. Bullet 12′6″ TWCC SUP Race Board

sic-bullet-12-6-sup-race-board-02

The new production S.I.C. Bullet 12′6″ stand up paddle race board have been on the market for a few months. This one has a fixed fin setup while the one I got back in 2011 had the steering system (A.S.S.) installed. Continue reading ‘S.I.C. Bullet 12′6″ TWCC SUP Race Board’

Starboard 2013 9′0″ x 33″ Hero SUP Surfboard

starboard-9-0x33-hero-sup-surfboard-1

I recently had the chance to try out the Starboard 9′0″ x 33″ Hero stand up paddle surfboard and it’s my favorite Starboard SUP board for the south shore so in the past few years. I like this board better than the 9′5″ wide point. I haven’t tried the smaller wide point yet. Continue reading ‘Starboard 2013 9′0″ x 33″ Hero SUP Surfboard’

Blue Planet 9′6″ x 30″ Nalu SUP Surfboard

blue-planet-9-6x30-nalu-sup-surfboard-4

The Blue Planet 9′6″ x 30″ “Nalu” stand up paddle surfboard is my favorite Blue Planet board I’ve tried so far. The board reminds me of a classic longboard shape and rides very predictably. I like the wide nose because it adds a bit more floatation and stability. The rounded pintail turns nicely and the two other guys that tested it with me thought the same things. Evolve “Pintail” Electric Skateboard Review

evolve-pintail-electric-skateboard-3

I recently purchased an Evolve “Pintail” electric skateboard from Evolve Asia. This is the third electric skateboard I’ve bought so far. The first was the Altered Electric M6 800 which I got from Robert at Blue Planet Surf. I actually got 2 of those because I thought it would be fun for two people to ride together. VestPac Hydration Pack

vestpac-wilsonpac-hydration-pack-1

Here’s a video review of a hydration pack that I have been using recently, the WilsonPac model from VestPac. The WilsonPac was designed specifically for watersports use and has a big pocket you can use to carry your cell phone, keys, etc.. The downside for me with this pack is that the reservoir is too small. Check out the video below. Continue reading ‘VestPac Hydration Pack’

VIRUS Women’s Stay Cool Compression Crop Pants – Review

Guest post from Kari Leong (2x Winner of Hawaii Business Magazine’s Fittest CEO Contest)

I was so excited to get my own Virus International Crop Pants and V Neck Top. Evan has been raving about how his Virus Compression gear helps his body to “recover” after a hard SUP session. I wake up at 5 am each morning to work out for about 60- minutes. Since I’m scared of sharks, I stick to land based exercise. Sometimes I’ll do Beachbody workout videos and sometimes I’ll go on the elliptical machine. After having three children, it takes “a lot more working out” to get my body close to its same shape and form.

Ed Wheeler’s Custom S.I.C. Bullet 12′6″ SUP Race Board

ed-wheeler-sic-bullet-12-impressions

Both Ed Wheeler and I love our SIC Bullet 12′6″ boards because it’s one of the few 12′6″ boards that can handle our weight. Ed got his a little after I got mine and I’ve seen him paddling it for south shore downwinders, north shore races and surfing. Ed’s a big guy so it’s something to see him surfing a 12′6″ race board. Flatwater speed test- unlimited SUP’s by Robert Stehlik

This article was originally published at Robert Stehlik’s Zen Waterman blog.

Last week Evan Leong and I had a chance to test Mark Raaphorst’s S-16 Standamaran prototype that he was shipping to New York for a race with a stopover on Oahu. I have been wanting to organize a speed test for SUP race boards for a while, so this was a good opportunity to comparison test unlimited boards in flatwater conditions. Amundson 12′6″ SUP Stand Up Paddle Board

amundson-12-6-sup-stand-up-paddle-board-2

I visited Blue Planet Surf’s shop and Robert Stehlik suggested I try the Amundson 12′6″ stand up paddle board. He thought I might like it because it has enough volume to float 200+ lbs people comfortably and it surfs small waves really well and he was right. The board also has a displacement type nose so it has a nice glide and the rocker is low, making it perfect for small wave conditions. The tail is fairly wide and thick so it doesn’t sink too much when I step on it to turn. The wide tail helps for the stability and the sharp rails really help to turn the board no matter where you’re standing on it. The board is also fairly light. I demoed this board in small waves and light winds and really liked it.
