I was browsing youtube.com and found this short video from the Hennessey 2007 Maliko race. Now that I’m into downwind racing, it’s really interesting to see how these guys are catching bumps. If you watch the SUP portion around 2 minutes into the video, you’ll see Dave and Ekolu Kalama almost not even paddling and […]

Mark Raaphorst told me about a tripod camera system he was making to record his downwind sessions. Very nice job Mark. Check out the video of the F-16 Version 2 in action. (click thumbnail to launch video)

This week is looking to be great for downwind runs. East winds are 10-20 mph+ all week and there’s an east swell. I got a chance to do a downwind run this morning in great conditions. I was trucking along and focused on catching bumps when about 20 minutes into the run I heard a […]

After riding Ray Shiraishi’s F-14 in epic downwind conditions a few weeks back I couldn’t get it out of my mind. I told Ray that his F-14 (w/out rudder) would be perfect with a rudder. Last week I called Mark Raaphorst at Sandwich Island Composites (S.I.C.) to ask how long it would take to shape […]

After a long wait, I finally got my Joe Blair 12’6″ SUP race board. It’s way different than any of the other racing stand up boards that I’ve ridden or even seen. Actually, the closest one to this would probably be the Jimmy Lewis 12’6″. But the Jimmy Lewis 12’6″ is much thicker, the rails […]

After finishing 4th at the recently concluded Molokai Paddleboard race, I had a chance to talk to Morgan Hoesterey, the only female paddler for the SUP solo unlimited division. Morgan said that her stint in this race was just to step up to the challenge; she never expected anything from it.

In this next video, Todd explains the proper design of a stand up paddle in more detail. The bottom line is, a paddle should have the right shape, blade angle and surface design to get maximum efficiency.

I think that a quiver of downwind boards is going to be preferable…at least for me and my lack of endurance and paddling skills. I just finished the Coast Guard race this morning which was basically just paddling. There was no wind except for maybe 2 gusts I felt but still under 10 mph. I […]

I’ve been doing a lot of distance and downwind paddling lately and got a chance to ask Todd Bradley, a champion paddler, for his insights. This is a video that I’ve watched over and over already.

What do you do when the wind is 30 mph+ and the waves are blown side shore? You do a downwind run like we did. I called Todd Bradley in the morning of December 17 and asked if he was doing a downwind run because I wanted to try the C4 Vortice XP. Since the […]
