This was sent to us via email by Robert Stehlik. Dear Fellow Paddler, Blue Planet Surf is pleased to present our first SUP race workshop on Sunday, Aug. 21st on the North Shore, 8am to 12pm, followed by a pot luck lunch.

Here are some great downwind paddling videos that Robert Stehlik posted on his Zen Waterman blog. These were taken during the last Blue Planet SUP clinic held a week before the 2011 Battle of the Paddle Hawaii. Check it out at the link below: http://zenwaterman.blogspot.com/2011/05/downwind-clinic-video-with-nicole.html

Todd Bradley sent us some clips of him riding the C4 12’6″ “Switchblade” stand up paddle board. The video is a bit long but it gives different angles of how the board performs in light winds. I’ve tried this board myself in surf and really liked it. I like the glide and in small waves […]

I visited Blue Planet Surf‘s shop and Robert Stehlik suggested I try the Amundson 12’6″ stand up paddle board. He thought I might like it because it has enough volume to float 200+ lbs people comfortably and it surfs small waves really well and he was right. The board also has a displacement type nose […]

I did a Hawaii Kai downwind run with Doug Lock and Todd Bradley a while back. Todd was on a prototype C4 Switchblade and Doug and I rode his Wave Blade OC-2, 2 man canoe. The conditions were a nice 15 mph east trade wind and a great following tide which made the bumps connect […]

Bill posted this video of the SIC crew at Maliko. When people ask why we love downwind paddling, just show them this video. (click thumbnail to launch video)

Ok…I broke down and had to give it a try. Randy Strome and Kainoa Beaupre, this is your fault! After a number of hard core stand up paddlers started training on OC-1 (one man canoes) I had to give it a shot. Since 80% of the guys I know paddling OC-1 ride the Kamanu Composites […]

I was talking to my friend Jason tonight and trying to explain over the phone how to catch bumps on a downwind run. This game at ocpaddler.com is a very good tool to understand the timing needed. It may not make you a pro but it will give you the idea of how to catch […]

I’d like to give a big “THANK YOU!” to the crew in Maui for letting me tag along with them for a couple downwinders. Mark Raaphorst, Randy Strome, Jack Dyson, Livio Menelau, Chris and Donna. Also, thanks to Pono Bill for letting me use his leash. Coming from Oahu, I thought we were spoiled (and […]

The F-16 v2 is the best F series board I’ve ridden to date. After the first Hawaii Kai run, I decided that the F-16 v2 was the best planing hull F series board I had tried but after 3 sessions in various conditions I now think that it’s even better than my F-18. The board […]

Here’s Todd Bradley’s ‘pocket coaching’ session with Ray Shiraishi. Ray is riding an early model custom SIC F-14 and I think he weighs 150 lbs or so. Ray is already a pretty fast racer who did the Molokai Channel race tandem last year. This video is a good example how someone with some experience and […]

This post is going to kick off a short series of video training that we were fortunate enough to be a part of. Todd Bradley, who’s been a top paddler for over 30 years and has over 50 Molokai crossings mentioned to me he was going to start offering personal paddle coaching called ‘pocket coaching’. […]

A few weeks ago I got a chance to join some of the fastest downwind paddlers on a practice run before the Duke’s Oceanfest Race. The plan was to shoot some video tips from each of them but my Sanyo Xacti E2 died a few minutes into it. Here’s what I was able to get […]
