Molokai Holokai SUP Race – Sept. 4 2010

Posted 17 days ago

Molokai Holokai
SUP Race – Sept 4, 2010 – Molokai, Hawaii
Presented by Molokai `Ohana Surf Club The first annual Molokai Holokai isn’t just another downwind race for stand up paddlers. It’s an opportunity to discover one of Hawaii’s fastest, and least known, down-winders. It’s also a chance to give back to the island which has for decades, served as an integral location for major water-sports events. The Molokai Holokai is designed, first and foremost, as a competitive venue for our Molokai SUP community. Many Molokai paddlers often lack resources to attend off-island race events, so this one if for them… but we welcome friendly competition from the outside! Off-island paddlers, you’re invited to holokai, or come out on the water with us, to help make SUP accessible to the greater Friendly Isle community. The Kamalo run is 8.5 miles of pure fun. Tradewinds are funneled through the Pailolo Channel creating consistently strong winds that are almost always directly at your back. Add in pristine water, breath-taking multi-island views and friendly people, and you’ve got an unforgettable event. [Link]

World Class Speed

Posted 18 days ago

World Champion Andrew Logreco was first in the Stock Class (14′ no rudder) to cross the finish line following a grueling 32 mile solo paddle across the Ka’iwi Channel! His time was 5:25:53. It was an impressive effort as he finished well ahead of several competitors riding longer boards that were equipped with rudders…. His 14′ board was designed and built by Kyle Bernhardt, an insightful craftsman. Here at Tropical Blends, we are very proud of the effort and teamwork it took to accomplish this victory. Also, we’re humbly here to claim the right to having the world’s fastest Ka’iwi Channel 14′ stock board! At least for the moment. Come in and meet the designer-builder, he’s here in the shop almost every Saturday……..aloha! [Link]

Two First Place Finishes

Congratulations to our champion on the stock 14′er designed by Kyle Bernhardt. World Champion Andrew Logreco finished his solo effort in 5h 26m!! Our relay team of Kyle Bernhardt and Jim Hayes finished in 6h 37m. Thanks Kyle for carrying the old man and Gary Murakami for the taking such good care of us during the crossing! Mahalo and aloha to all. [Link]

Ka’iwi Channel – translation: the channel of bones, aka: Molokai
Channel. The Ka’iwi, or Molokai Channel has a centuries old reputation
for being a treacherous body of water that has claimed the lives of
many, from ancient canoe fleets, to fisherman and watermen.
Today there are official races for outrigger canoe, surf skis, and
paddleboards. Each take place across the Molokai Channel and each of
these races are regarded world-wide as the crowning challenge for each
sport. The Challenge:
*32 Miles of Open Ocean
Regarded as the world championship of paddleboard racing.
*Traverses 32 miles of rough water from the North Shore of Molokai, to the South Shore of Oahu.
*Covers a depth of 2,300 feet and is subject to open-ocean swells of up to 30 feet.
*Considered one of the roughest ocean channels in the world.
*Ultimate test of endurance – no engines or sails, just a paddler and the propulsion power of his arms.
*Wildly varying open-ocean conditions challenge a paddler’s surfing skills.Top paddlers can ride swells for 100s of yards.
*Capricious currents and tidal effects test a paddler’s ocean navigation skills.
*Record crossing time: 4:45:03, set by Jamie Mitchell in 2004. [Link]

This race has been a favorite amongst the novice and veteran paddlers because of the short distance of 4 miles. With numerous age divisions as young as 13yrs and younger to the veteran 60+ age group, this gives everyone of the opportunity to test their agility and competiveness regardless of paddling experience.
Since 2007, we have opened up the race to the Stand Up Paddling community, which have double/tripled in the amount of entrants annually. In 2009, our event set a record of 402 paddlers total making it possibly the largest paddleboard & stand up paddling race in the world! This year, we are anticipating close to 500 competitors!
Considered to be an ohana-style event, the ever favorite parent/child division, in both paddleboard and stand up paddle divisions, provides families the opportunity to experience a healthy ocean sport, together. And to keep with our Hawaiian culture, the traditional all-wood board division is one of the most challenging divisions of all. Wood boards need to be solid wood. No hollow wooden boards will be allowed. This year, a portion of the competitor’s entries will benefit the Hawaiian Immersion language schools as Da Hui has always supported our na keiki; especially those perpetuating our Hawaiian culture. Trip to China

Posted 20 days ago

I put together a quick video around my recent visit to our factory in China. Our hosts included Mr. Sumitomo senior, his son Yu and factory manager Mark Cao. Was nice to see Japanese owners working so closely with their Chinese family of employees. Everywhere I looked people were hard at work making the water toys we enjoy. This is truly a multi-national operation including our input and design. It’s a happy place this factory where most everyone lives on site. Wives and children are here waiting for husbands and fathers that have only a few short meters separating them. There is a very nice apartment building annexed to the factory. Of course the cultural experience was eyeopening. [Link]

Point to Point Boards

Posted 20 days ago

We’ve been trying out a number of new down-wind boards in preparation for the upcoming season. Our focus has been on the 12′ 6″ and 14′ range thinking these would be the easier boards to handle. The results have been very positive with faster and faster runs. For my money, I think the displacement hull ranks really high in fun factor and seems to be super quick as well. The beauty of these boards is that they seem to pick up swell easily and then maintain their momentum over a long distance with very little help from the rider. Of course water time is an important key but the equipment is helping with the work load. Anyway, there are several available for trial if you’re inclined to late afternoon Hawaii Kai to Kahala runs. Just give us a call. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised! [Link]

John and I spent most of our 4th of July taking pictures of boards. Doesn’t sound like a lot of fun but actually we had a pretty good time. Lots of work but it needed to be done. You’ll see the results as we revise our web page together with the rest of our paperwork. Planning a new brochure so we have something to send out when asked. Anyway, all good! Keoni’s Rumshpringa in the Mentawais

Posted 4 months ago

Here is team rider Keoni Jones. Top footage from 3 solid days of surf . Check it out on Vimeo: CLick here Journey of the Jones Clan It took 2 days of flights, 3 days of waiting before we finally got into the water. The 12 hour motor out of Padang City on the Aileoitamarked the beginning of movie marathons, good food, good surf, and the end of our supply of Bintang. There were 3 goofy footers and 3 regulars on the trip, leading to constant disagreements on which spot we were goin to next. We started off at Playgrounds, encountering 3 foot swell. Burgerworld, a peeling right offered some of the best waves the entire trip. 2-4ft, clean blue water, light winds, and an empty lineup. The wave required fair bit of speed to connect all the way through. I rode Dan’s Luke Studer 4 fin. Very fast and almost like a skateboard, carrying its speed across sections while staying real lose. After a few days of surfing rights, the power balance between goofy and regular footers shifted; We headed south for Telescopes. The swell was 2 feet shy of being perfect barreling lefts. I busted out the Russ Hoyte 5′9 MBX, it works mentally in waves up to head high. The weather was very unpredictable. Everyday it would be sunny or partly cloudy and clean, but in the distance there was always a mini storm system, bringing howling winds and rain. So our mission was fragile, we had to surf while we could as hard as we could. Macaronis had to be the highlight of the trip. 3foot solid, sunny and mean. The other dudes who stayed at the camp were happy shoulder hopping, and our crew was happy to sit on the peak. Solid surf all day, barrels in the morning, lines of soft lipped lefts in the evening. The Paha

Posted 10 months ago

As we strive to push our equipment into the world of advanced performance, we also look to re-define what that means to the stand-up surfer. At this point, the Paha exemplifies what we consider the cutting edge of performance surfing. The bottom design marries a definite “V” with a slight concave and a double barrel off the fins. This board wants to ride like a performance short board; drives hard, converts from rail to rail quickly and will really surprise you off the top. If you want to expand your stand-up surfing horizons, this is the board. 9’ 1” x 28 1/2” x 3 7/8” (Twin w/trailer, 2 + 1, Quad – Fin Setup Options) Surf Range: 160 lbs to 210 lbs – Intermediate to Advanced [Link]

The Welo

Posted 10 months ago

The Welo is another specialized design aimed at satisfying a wide range of riders. For the beginning paddler this board provides the satiability needed while allowing for improved performance. This is another one that seems to suit the smaller gals; an easy paddler in a compact size. It’s also very well suited for the somewhat heavier rider that has gained a degree of skill (especially in the surf). Whatever your demands, be sure to check out the Welo before making any final decisions. 9’ 6” x 29 3/4” x 4” (2 + 1 Fin Setup) Paddle Range: 110 lbs to 190 lbs – Beginner to Intermediate Surf Range: 165 lbs to 210 lbs – Intermediate to Advanced [Link]

The Wai Kahe

Posted 10 months ago

The Wai Kahe – Here’s the Welo’s baby brother; more of the same, just a smaller package. This is personal favorite for the surf. Great all around performance with the added bonus of comfortable stability while you’re at it! Really fun little board in a huge range of surf conditions. 9’ 2” x 29” x 4” (Twin w/trailer, 2 + 1, Quad – Fin Setup Options) Paddle Range: 110 lbs to 175 lbs – Beginner to Advanced Surf Range: 160 lbs to 210 lbs Intermediate to Advanced [Link]

The Pokole

Posted 10 months ago

The Pokole – This is another in keeping with the Wai Kahe and Welo. The reduction in length allows the board to fit the needs of an even smaller rider while still providing those characteristics that have made this line of boards so popular. 8’ 10” x 28 1/2” x 3 7/8” ( 2 + 1 Fin Setup). Available in two colors. Paddle Range: 100 lbs to 175lbs – Beginner to Advanced Surf Range: 150 lbs to 210 lbs – Intermediate to Advanced [Link]

The Cover of Surfing Mag – Go Daniel

Posted 11 months ago

In Daniel’s older brothers words………..”Daniel difinately came out of his shell for this trip. I was blown away by his badckside tuberiding . I had to talk him into this trip because he wanted to come to indo to surf a left. I told him he could surf the left later. The board he’s riding here is the same one he rode last time we got this wave – nine years ago. It’s been sitting in my closet all this time. Daniel was just killing it. And just for all of us to be out there together – no one else the whole time – the same crew that scored it the first time almost a decage ago……it was pretty amazing!” [Link]

PAT RAWSON WINS DICK BREWER SHAPE-OFF

Posted 11 months ago

Del Mar, Ca – October 12, 2009 -Hawaii’s Pat Rawson took top honors during Sacred Craft’s “Tribute to the Masters Shape-off” honoring Dick Brewer. Rawson bested legendary shapers Reno Abellira, Ricky Carroll, Gary Linden and Dennis Murphy in the two day event, part of the weekend long celebration of the surfboard. “I’m absolutely stoked,” said Rawson. “Brewer mentored me, so to win this event shaping one of his classic guns, with Dick here to help judge it, it’s absolutely fantastic. To shape with this great grouping of friends, all of whom respect and appreciate RB’s expertise, well, it has been a wonderful weekend for all involved.”

1st Annual Marin Parks Stand Up Paddle Race – Aug 16

Posted 12 months ago

There were only five contestants, but to Adam Craig it was a great start. Adam’s a park ranger with the County of Marin parks department. He came up with the idea for the stand-up paddle board race and organized the event. “I had seen lots of stand-up paddlers here for the last couple of years, and it’s started to grow and grow and grow, said Craig as he watched the paddlers, “It just seemed like a good idea for us–not having really a place for a surf contest–so stand-up paddle boards are ideal. The beauty of paddle boarding is that anybody can do it, young, old. Having some kind of swimming experience is a good idea, but anyone can do it.” [Link]

I also had a chance to meet up with Firewire’s Sales & Marketing Director last week and got to try out a Dominator for the first time. He had his personal 5′ 8″ which paddled like a champ and greatly exceeded my expectations surf-wise. Makes sense as to why I’ve gotten so many Dominator orders as of late. This was only my first shipment of demos so I’m lobbying hard to get some Dominators in the fleet as well. [Link]

Just got in a fresh batch…they’re pretty much all spoken for but I haven’t heard back from a few customers I called to let know about the arrival so we’ll just wait and see how that unfolds. I have more on order as well so they’ll be filtering in throughout the summer. I currently have a 5-8, 5-10, 6-0, 6-4, 6-6, 6-8 and 6-10 if anyone wants to come down to size one up for future reference. The feedback has been really positive on these boards so I’m curious to hear what Jim thinks of the 6-6 after he gets it in the water. [Link]

XM Tangle-Free Leash

Posted 14 months ago

I’ve known about this leash for some time but was always pretty skeptical and didn’t give it too much thought. Well at least not until customers started asking me to order some after seeing the Surfline review. Tried one out myself the last two sessions and to be quite honest the thing works…might be a little early to tell for sure, but I didn’t feel the drag I thought I would and the cord seemed to stay out of the way. We’re all stocked up so if you’re in need of a new leash this may be a good option. [Link]
