Stand Up World Series Schedule Update: 2014

Stand Up World Series Finals at Turtle Bay

The Waterman League is committed to the best interest of the sport of Stand Up Paddling in every respect. After the clash that was created by the Battle of the Paddle choosing the already established World Series Finals dates, we have been carefully considering all possible options to find the best solution for all concerned. In our opinion, nobody wins when two major events clash, so we have decided to push our event back to the same dates as last year for the good of the sport: the new dates will be the 10th – 12th October 2014. 2013 Turtle Bay Challenge Wipeouts

2013-stand-up-world-series-at-turtle-bay-day-2-sprint-races-wipeouts-01

The last week brought us some huge waves to the North Shore and some crazy weather. I saw some crazy wipeouts from surfers which reminded me of trying to surf a 12′6″ SUP race board in double overhead waves. I thought I’d post these photos are from last year’s Turtle Bay Challenge surf race. The waves were pounding that day and there were some pretty gnarly wipeouts. I figured that if one of the world’s best water athletes were wiping out then I was much better off taking pictures than testing my luck in the water. Lol. 2013 Stand Up World Series at Turtle Bay Day 2: Sprint Races

2013-stand-up-world-series-at-turtle-bay-day-2-sprint-races-007

The second day of the 2013 Stand Up World Series Finals at Turtle Bay was pretty crazy. The sprint races on day 2 were in north shore waves up to double overhead and pitching hard. I’m surprised that no one was badly injured. In retrospect, some of the racers probably would have been better off in some heats with 11-12′ gun shaped surfing SUP’s. Toward the finals, Kai Lenny took off on a bomb and caught his front edge and got pounded. If Kai Lenny was wiping out, we know the conditions would be crazy for everyone else. 2013 Stand Up World Series at Turtle Bay Day 1: Distance Race

banner_tbfinals3-608x280

Here are some photos I took from day 1 of the 2013 Stand Up World Series Finals distance race that started at Turtle Bay and ended at Ali’i Beach Park in Haleiwa. The race started off with no wind but it picked up a little bit during the race. It still looked like a lot of paddling and not much bump riding. I saw Annabel Anderson on the beach and was a bit confused as to why she wasn’t paddling. Turns out that Annabel already won the overall #1 rank for the year so she was taking a break. Kai Lenny & Annabel Anderson secure the 2013 World Titles

Monday 14 October

Kai Lenny steps up to come from behind and take the Title

Kai Lenny (Naish) from Maui went into the Final day of competition behind: a disappointing 4th place finish in the long distance created even more of a challenge for him to defend his World Title, as Connor Baxter (Starboard), had the points advantage from the events leading into the Finals, as well as a 3rd place in the long distance race on Day 1.
