Intro to Stand Up Paddling and Fitness Video

By Tommy Callan and Suzie Cooney

Paddle Surfing was started back in the 40’s by the Waikiki Beach boys on Oahu.  They would use their outrigger paddles to “paddle surf” their big boards around the tourists and take pictures.

Today, Stand Up Paddling is the fastest growing water sport on the planet due to its easy learning curve.  Though you may have seen surf legends Laird Hamilton, Dave Kalama or Robby Naish surfing huge waves, there are plenty of calm waters around Maui to learn on.  Pretty much anyone can do it and it’s making surfers out of everyone.

Record 187-Mile Standup Paddle thru Grand Canyon by Hawaii’s Kalepa

Hawaiian Archie Kalepa Makes Ride of His Life:

Record 187 Miles on Standup Paddleboard Through
Grand Canyon, Colorado River.

Journey Explored Connection between Native Hawaiians
& American Indians

(HONOLULU – October 19, 2009) Hawaiian veteran lifeguard and big-wave rider Archie Kalepa is no stranger to life-changing experiences. There have been many during his 46 years of life spent in and around the ocean. He never imagined that the fresh waters of inland America would deliver the most astounding experience of all: connecting his native Hawaiian experience to that of the American Indians, and incidentally setting a world record of being the first to standup paddle (SUP) 187 miles through the Grand Canyon.

C4 Waterman Ambassador/Rider racing 22 miles – flat water Oct 17 2009 for LIVESTRONG

This was sent to us via email by C4 Ambassador/Rider Chip Bock.

All,

Tomorrow is the 3rd Annual 22 mile Causeway 2 Causeway Challenge in Cocoa, FL. This is my 3rd year competing in the C2C and I won the overall SUP Div last year. It is a brutal race due to it being flat water (no following swell etc) and is one of the longest annual flat water paddleboard races in the US.

More importantly I do this race each year to raise funds and awareness for LIVESTRONG and the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

14 Year Old Slater Trout Places 2nd In the World Class Elite “Battle of the Paddle” SUP Race

Slater Trout on BOP

Dana Point, Ca – The 2009 Rainbow Sandals / Gerry Lopez Battle of the Paddle proved to be the years most spectacular event in the fast growing sport of Stand Up Paddle Racing. The challenging elite race with four of the buoy roundings placed inside the surf break combined with consistent shoulder to head high sets pumping through the course and 110 of the worlds fastest paddlers battling for $25,000 in prize money, all made for a nail biting event that had the crowd cheering and gasping. The most talked about competitor of the Elite Men’s Division was fourteen year old, Slater Trout who managed to stay in the top three slots the entire race. Beating all but one of the world’s fastest paddlers (Jamie Mitchel of Australia) Trout claimed a solid second place finish and proved to all in attendance that he has a very bright future in the sport.
