Planet Sun DragonFly Topwater Sunglasses

planet-sun-dragonfly-topwater-sunglasses-3

The DragonFly is Planet Sun’s new model for their topwater eyewear line. I use the Sunphibian model religiously when paddling SUP, OC-1 or Canoe. This is the newest model that has a detachable strap and wrap type frame. I wear these on the beach and also at my kid’s sport events. They are comfy and the lenses cut the glare.

amundson-sup-boards-with-doug-hopkins-and-john-amundson-1

I was at the Blue Planet Surf SUP Clinic and Demo Day held last Nov. 6, 2010 and got the chance to meet Doug Hopkins, product manager for Aquaglide Paddlesurf / Amundson Stand Up Paddle Boards, and the designer himself, John Amundson. They brought along some of their boards and one of them was the Amundson 12′6″ which I had the chance to try out a while back. The Amundson 12′6″ comes in two models, the TR and the TR-X. They are almost the same except the TR-X has a layer of carbon making it about 4 lbs lighter than the TR.

2010 Duke’s OceanFest SUP Race

2010-dukes-oceanfest-sup-race-01

Here are some pictures I took before the start of the 2010 Duke’s OceanFest SUP Race. The race had a good turnout this year with a lot of competitors. The conditions this year weren’t as good as in 2009, hence the slower times but the last 2 miles seemed to be the best I can remember. We had some wind but a bad tide slowed our times. The tide seemed to change toward the end which helped. So did the small surf. I rode the SIC Bullet 17′4″ and took a really far outside line. The only guy outside of me was a lie down paddle boarder and he was about 30 feet outside of me. Other than that, everyone else was inside of me. I think that probably hurt my overall time but I didn’t want to get stuck in the pack.

C4 Waterman 12′6″ “Switchblade” SUP Board In Action – Video

c4-waterman-switchblade-12-6-in-action

Todd Bradley sent us some clips of him riding the C4 12′6″ “Switchblade” stand up paddle board. The video is a bit long but it gives different angles of how the board performs in light winds. I’ve tried this board myself in surf and really liked it. I like the glide and in small waves the nose allows an easier re-entry into the reform of the wave. This makes catching small waves fun because of the challenge to carry the longest ride possible by connecting small bumps, similar to a downwinder. I have yet to try this on a Hawaii Kai run.

Planet Sun UV Protection Products

planet-sun-uv-protection-products-2

Planet Sun has some of the best UV protection products out on the market. I personally own and use the Sunphibian Polarized Sunglasses which is great on and off the water. The sun umbrellas are handy when I’m at my kid’s baseball, soccer and when sitting at a hot football game. Planet Sun UV-blocking travel umbrella. I got introduced to Planet Sun at the Ocean Expo we had on Oahu. John, the founder, was promoting his line of sun protection and it caught my eye. I picked up a bunch of stuff to test out and really liked it.

Blue Planet Surf SUP Clinic and Demo Day Video

Robert Stehlik sent us this video of the Blue Planet Surf SUP Clinic and Demo Day which was held last Nov. 6, 2010. The highlights of that day were Board Design Clinics with John Amundson and Kevin Seid. There was also a short paddling clinic with Jeff Chang and Robert Stehlik. I was there and definitely think people got some good info. Robert’s friend Fabrice shot and edited the video below.
