Kainoa Beaupre Ripping on his 6-10 Stand Up

Tommy Chorman of Freedom Riding Company www.freedomriding.com sent over this video of ‘The Hammer’ surfing his 6′10″ stand up board. I’m not sure if this is Sandy’s but that’s where he normally surfs that board. You may be thinking, “That’s a small board.”

Surftech Takayama Thruster

Here’s a short clip of the thruster I installed on the Surftech Takayama. I used True Ames 4.5″ fins.

For the most part, I liked it. It turns tighter and it didn’t feel like it was gonna slide out. The problem that I had w/ it was that when you get towards the nose, it makes it kinda harder to nose ride. I guess riding this board as a thruster may not make a lot of sense because if I have a smaller board I can ride that one straight off the tail. But the Takayama seems like it wants to be ridden all around the board, the nose, the tail. Actually, after talking to Takayama, that’s exactly what he said.

SoCal Ocean Racing Series

We got this email from Cheance:

Hey Folks!

I come to you by way of Chris Koerner who suggested I give you the calendar for the SoCalOceanRacing series.

We are a 9-race winter series open to all types of paddlecraft. We started about 10 or more years ago- some of us did anyway, hosting races for surfskis, then solo outriggers joined the parade, and then the tandem outriggers wanted to play, then paddle boarders trickled in, and now along comes the SUP brigade! It’s awesome!

Know Your Limits – My First Experience in the Kaiwi Channel

Know Your Limits - My First Experience in the Kaiwi Channel

I got the chance to paddle in the Kaiwi Channel last week.  This is the channel between Molokai and Oahu where the 32 mile race is held.  Let me start out by saying it was way harder than I thought it would be.  I got a call from Kainoa B who I will now refer to as ‘The Hammer’ (inside joke).  He was excited about taking his boat out into the Kaiwi Channel and doing a mini Molokai downwinder.  Tommy from Freedom Surf Company was coming to get some video and photo footage (footage of Tommy surfing) and his other friend Carlos was coming along for the paddle.  Kekoa was in the driver’s seat and we were all set. 10th Annual Christian Surfers/Hawaiian Island Surf Ministries Standup Paddle Race

Here’s some info about the race from Art:

It was rather short, in the interest of safety. It started at about 2:40 pm and launched from the jetty inside the channel where people come and go from bowls. They basically sprinted to the last outside green buoy (approx 1/4 mile), made a turn and came back. We set up 2 buoys near the wall for them to paddle thru for the finish. We decided on 3 divisions. 12′ and under, over 12′, and age 17 and under, so the children would have a chance to win.

Joe Bark Interview – Board Previews and Tips

I did this interview with Joe Bark last month over the phone. I just learned about Joe while getting more and more into the SUP distance paddling arena. Joe is famous for his paddleboards and is now expanding into stand ups. He’s got a new 14′ SUP racer coming out from Surftech in the future and we got the scoops in advance. I haven’t gotten any date for the board release but it hopefully will be by Q1 2009.

Mark Raaphorst Interview – F-14, F-16 and New SUP Race Boards

Last month I interviewed Maui based shaper and surfer Mark Raaphorst, and he discussed the differences between the F14 and F16’s along with other boards being used for downwinder stand up paddling. I shared with him my experience using the F16 while doing a downwinder and how the board became faster when it filled with water. He also gave some really good insight into downwind racing. I learned a lot.
