I just got my hands on a special hand made Leleo Kinimaka wood paddle. I know all the guys that appreciate working with wood are going to love the pictures of this one. This paddle is so nice that I may just hang it on the wall instead of put it in the water. I also learned an interesting aspect to Leleo’s warranty. He said that in the first year if you get scuff marks on the paddle he will refinish it for free.

I recently saw Kainoa in Waikiki at Canoe’s and he was teaching a surf lesson and riding an 8′6″ or 8′ SUP. He’s 210 lbs and the board was literally a few inches underwater. I wish I had my camera because it was a sight to see him paddling underwater.
Check out Jamie B’s site for a crazy sequence of Kainoa McGee at Pipe on a C4 SUP.

Here’s an email from Ted of C4 Waterman on their Big Sur Run last 11-June-08. Looks like everyone had a good time.
Hello All,
Here is the preliminary debrief/after action report from the events of the 10/11 Jun 08; Dave is going to write a much more entertaining and articulate field report. Dave and I did not make the Demo on the 10th due to my flights that evening being cancelled; I made it home the evening of the 10th, then the next morning driving up to San Luis Obispo, arriving in time for breakfast at the Home of Aleutian Juice Surfboards.

With all the focus on shorter stand up boards surfing gnarley waves it’s nice to see how stand ups are being used to explore nature. These are some pretty stunning shots of riders on Surftech stand up boards.

DaKine came out with a coiled stand up paddle leash designed for downwind runs or touring. The coils have a larger diameter than others I’ve seen and used and the leash cord is thicker.

Dave Chun of Kialoa Paddles answers questions about paddling technique, paddle design and performance, his all-new Shaka Puu paddle, and general concerns about the stand up paddle surf culture. Dave also talks about choosing the right paddle, which all boils down to intuition that tells what type of paddle is best for the stand up paddle surfer.
We get to learn more about paddles and why design and performance are always relative to individual surfers.
The is the third and last installment of the Shaka Puu three-part series where Dave mentions that “paddle design is a compromise”.

Here’s a video from a previous Surftech Jay Moriarty Memorial Paddleboard Race in Monterey Bay. Looks like a lot of fun.
Things are looking great for The 2008 Surftech Jay Moriarty Memorial Paddleboard Race to be held this Saturday June 21st. Kicking off at 8:00 am at New Brighton Beach in Santa Cruz, a forecast of sunny conditions along with small ground swell should offer incredible conditions to what is expected to be the largest group ever participating in the race! This year’s event marks the 7th year that the “Jay Race” has run in the beautiful Monterey bay. Continue reading ‘Surftech Jay Moriarity Memorial Paddleboard Race – Video’

In this video, Dave looks at the dimensions of the Shaka Puu paddle and talks briefly about the absence of data that could help in determining which paddle is right for the individual. Right now, he Dave says, the best way to find out what type of paddle is ideal for the surfer is to go out and try different designs and see what suits best.

Evan, would you mind giving me some information about the Infinity Quad?
I have an opportunity to pick one up and was curious if you had any additional thoughts about the board beyond your review.
Specifically, of all the boards you’ve ridden, where would you put this one in the pack for a pure surfing board?
I’m basically your weight, a little taller and am looking at a 10′6 x 28 x 4 5/8
How’s the stability of the board. Seems the thicker tails he makes would add to stability.
The other board I am choosing between is a PSH 10′6 all arounder

Hi, I’m sorry to bother you, but would you be able to help recommend a good beginner board for me? I’m trying to start standup paddling, and I’ve been reading this website as well as other forums, etc. trying to find a good board.
Based on all the reviews you’ve done, I figured you were the guy to ask. There’s so many different boards to choose from that I’m just making myself nuts trying to figure out the differences. I’m 6′3″, 235 lbs., and a novice surfer.
I’m looking for the most durable board possible, and I’m more interested in cruising than surfing with it. I’ll probably surf only occasionally, in knee-high waves. I was looking at the 11′6 c4 waterman from hawaiian south shore. I also inquired at psh, and Austin said they’d be getting in some 11′0 x 30 x 4 7/8 hand glassed boards in august. Would either of these boards suit me and be able to handle the abuse of a beginner falling/whacking it with a paddle every day? Or would you recommend an entirely different brand/board/model?
I like those two options I mentioned because both come with pad, fins, and paddle, which made them more economical for me. I’d like to stay in the 1400-1800 price range for the total package.
I’d really appreciate any advice or opinions you have, such as whether you’d recommend a molded sandwich board or a hand glassed one. I’ve been reading this site daily, and I love it. Thank you in advance for your time!
