Tropical Blends Newsletter 26 August 2008

Hello Everyone,

Hopefully those of you on Oahu got a chance to check out some of the action from this years Duke’s OceanFest that wrapped up this past Sunday. Competition took place for many of Duke Kahanamoku’s favorite water sports on the 118th anniversary of his birthday. The Great Hawaiian 105 KINE Luau went down early Saturday evening, which featured the music of Cecilio & Kapono and ono Hawaiian food.

A lot of practice in little waves led to a big victory for Chuck Inman and Tiffany Rabacal.

nman and Rabacal won the Waikiki Sandbox Bar World Title of Tandem Surfing contest yesterday at Kuhio Beach, Waikiki.

The event is considered the world championship for the sport, and the best international teams competed this week.

Duke’s Oceanfest Hawaii Paddleboard Championships Saturday, August 23, 2008

I finally did my first race yesterday and it was harder than I expected. The course was 10 miles from Hawaii Kai (start in front of Marshall Rose’s house) on the Koko Head side of the Koko Marina bridge, around the last green channel marker (blinkey), past Diamond Head, around a buoy set outside of Queen’s Surf and finish near the Beach Boy rental stands near the Duke Kahanamoku statue. The race was fun and I was pretty exhausted. Continue reading ‘Duke’s Oceanfest Hawaii Paddleboard Championships Saturday, August 23, 2008′

Stand-up paddling in midst of popular boom

This article was originally published by the Honolulu Advertiser –

A year ago, there were 40 entries in a stand-up paddle surfing contest at Kuhio Beach, and almost all of them were professional surfers or experienced watermen.

At this week’s C4 Waterman/Honolua Surf Stand-Up Paddle Surfing contest at Kuhio Beach, there were more than 80 entries, including women, children and experienced businessmen.

2008 Honolua Surf Co. & C4 Waterman present Hawaii Paddleboard Championship-Duke’s Race Update

I’ve been getting a lot of questions regarding the Duke’s race on Saturday.  Here’s the info I got:

Beach Entries are ok.  Show up at 9 am with your form and check for $40 written to “Hawaii Paddleboard Championship”.  There is no beach entry penalty or late fee.  Registration table will be at Koko Head side of Maunalua Bay (Maunalua Bay Bath House) near the restrooms.

The orientation/briefing will start around 10:45 am and race begins at 11 am.

The race starts in the water at Maunalua Bay and racers need to go around the last green channel marker buoy (blinkey I think it’s called) and one more around Queen Surf (NOT Diamond Head Buoy) and then the finish line is at the Duke Statue.  I saw something earlier that said it ended at Duke’s Restaurant but it’s Duke Statue.  After that you’ll get your swag stuff and lunch.

They are still figuring out the final divisions for the SUP divisions although all boards are welcome.  I heard rumors yesterday about a 14′ limit but today I was told that there will be a 14′+ unlimited class.  I was told there are over 100 entrants so far for paddleboards and SUPS and over 30 SUPs already entered.

Here’s the race organizer’s info:

Carl Kim

Any other info please post in the comments.

Steel Core Board Security Straps

A short video clip of Teene talking about the Steel Core Security Straps. Very good when you have to run to the market after a SUP session and have to leave your board on the car. Hopefully, I’ll get a chance to try these myself.
