Surftech Takayama Thruster

Here’s a short clip of the thruster I installed on the Surftech Takayama. I used True Ames 4.5″ fins.

For the most part, I liked it. It turns tighter and it didn’t feel like it was gonna slide out. The problem that I had w/ it was that when you get towards the nose, it makes it kinda harder to nose ride. I guess riding this board as a thruster may not make a lot of sense because if I have a smaller board I can ride that one straight off the tail. But the Takayama seems like it wants to be ridden all around the board, the nose, the tail. Actually, after talking to Takayama, that’s exactly what he said.

Shirts by The Ryde

dsc05173.jpg

My wife got one of these surf inspired shirts and wanted to write about it so here it is:

I was so thrilled to receive The Ryde t-shirt in the mail! When opening the package and taking out the shirt I noticed immediately the quality of the shirt, the color was vibrant and the material was soft. I couldnʼt wait to put it on and feel it against my skin. Upon putting it on, I immediately noticed that the shirt fit perfect to size and the material was very soft and comfortable. Steel Core Board Security Straps

A short video clip of Teene talking about the Steel Core Security Straps. Very good when you have to run to the market after a SUP session and have to leave your board on the car. Hopefully, I’ll get a chance to try these myself.

New Takayama Fins

Donald Takayama 4” side fins and 8” middle pivot fin

In an interview I did with Donald Takayama he mentioned some state of the art radical new fin designs. I asked when they will be available and he wasn’t sure so I called up Steve over at Surftech and he had some that I demo’d. They are so different that I didn’t even know which side was forward.

DaKine Downwind Paddle Leash

DaKine Downwind Paddle Leash

DaKine came out with a coiled stand up paddle leash designed for downwind runs or touring. The coils have a larger diameter than others I’ve seen and used and the leash cord is thicker.

DaKine SUP Board Bag

DaKine SUP Board Bag

I bought a DaKine board bag for a friend for Christmas which turned out to be the best present he got last year. The bag was for a 9′ longboard but that gave me insight into the quality of these bags. For the first 3 months of 2008 we drove to the north shore quite a bit and this bag really came in handy.

Maxfield Provisions Stand Up Paddle Cover

Maxfield Provisions Stand Up Paddle Cover

I met up with Shawn Maxfield a month or two ago and he showed me his new paddle covers. These are some of the highest quality covers I’ve seen so far. There is padding of some sort on the inside. The zipper is YKK and slides smooth. The outside is a cool weave. All in all it’s a great cover and Shawn is an interesting guy to talk to. We ended up going stand up paddling at Rest Camp in Makaha and had a blast.

DaKine Paddle Bag

DaKine Paddle Bag

I got my hands on 2 DaKine paddle bags for stand up paddles. I’m glad DaKine came out with a padded travel bag because it was pretty hard to find a travel bag that offered enough protection to go through the airline baggage process for my Maui trip to Pono Bill’s board test.

DaKine Waterman Hydration Pack

DaKine Waterman Hydration Pack

There’s been some talk about hydration bags for stand up paddling and especially for long cruises or downwind runs. There are a number of choices out there although this is the first one I found that is water sports specific.

Tropical Blends Surf Stand Up Paddle Board Fin Talk Video – Part 2

tb-fin-02.jpg

Jim of Tropical Blends Surf talks about the different type of fin box that they have on their surfboards and why they use such. He also explains to us the importance of fins and how they affect performance on any watercraft.

He says that you don’t have to necessarily change the board if you’re not satisfied with its performance, and that the fin is a really cheap way to change the board.

Tropical Blends Surf puts a huge emphasis on fins and has on a display a variety from different manufacturers.

Infinity Surf custom epoxy “ku ku hoe” stand up paddle board air vent – Video

Infinity Surf stand up paddle board air vent

When I visited Steve Boehne at Infinity Surf in Dana Point, California, I got a chance to see some interesting air vents that he installs in his custom epoxy boards. I got a short video of Steve explaining the vent to a customer, some inside info and shot some pictures up close. These are the actual vents he uses on the custom epoxy Ku Ku Hoe stand up paddle boards.
