More Balls than Finesse

img_8585_2.jpg

Here’s a picture from HawaiianWaterShots.com of my stand up paddle buddy out at Chun’s Reef on February 16. I was on Maui for the Pono Bill KeNalu.com big board test but heard the surf was epic on Oahu. I’ve always been amazed at his unusual and unorthodox stance. Yes, he’s standing the same as if he was paddling straight although he’s turning and going down the line of this North Shore beauty. Here’s a guy over 50 years old, staying in great shape and having a blast. My hat is off to him because he will rush double and triple overhead waves that I am afraid of.

Surftech Stand Up Paddle Surf Video

This is the video that Surftech played at ASR. It gives a pretty cool view of different ways that people can stand up paddle. I like the river shot and the dude giving the girl in the bikini a lesson.

Ku Ikaika Teaser Video

I found another video from C4 that was shot with 4 cameras. I guess the full version will be out soon. There’s a lot of SUP promotion these days.

Ku Ikaika Challenge Video

Haleiwa Bill found this video on youtube from the big wave Ku Ikaika Challenge. I think Nate got some additional footage at www.SUPSurfMag.com coming up in the future. I’m bummed I couldn’t go to the event but I had a lot of last minute things to take care of before going to Maui for Pono Bill’s big board test which was a blast. I’ll try to make it to the Buffalo contest next weekend instead. Hope to see you there.

Off to Pono Bills Big Board Test Tomorrow

Only one more day and I’m off to Maui to join Pono Bill, StoneAxe and the gang to test out a slew of stand up paddle equipment. More info here http://www.ponohouse.com/ponoblog/the-big-board-comparison/. I think Bill has something like 20 to 30 boards to test in one day. I’m interested to see how this will be done because it’s already tricky to test out 2 boards side by side. Times that by 10 and it will definitely get interesting.

Standing Up with SUP SurfMag and Haleiwa Bill

I’ve been waiting to get in the water for a few days because the rain and weather has been pretty terrible. Along with that, I had a pretty busy week of work. I got some time to sneak away yesterday to the North Shore of Oahu with my buddy Kekoa although I wasn’t sure at first because it looked huge in the online surf cam.

Joe Blair gives his version of the nose kick turn for stand up paddle surfing – Video

Joe Blair

Joe Blair shares a technique for spinning your board around quickly. It’s not as easy as it sounds. I tried it and it takes some practice.

Stand Up Surfing Tongg’s with Friends

PICT0005.JPG

This was a rare glassy moment in mid December. The winds were howling at 15 to 30 mph for the whole week and we got lucky to have a break in the early morning where the wind died down. Everyone expected it to be windy and small so they didn’t bother coming out so it was just my buddy and me for a short stand up surf session.

Downwind Stand Up Paddle from Hawaii Kai to Waikiki Beach

PICT0008.JPG

What do you do when the wind is 30 mph+ and the waves are blown side shore? You do a downwind run like we did. I called Todd Bradley in the morning of December 17 and asked if he was doing a downwind run because I wanted to try the C4 Vortice XP. Since the shipment of Vortice XP’s are not here yet, they are closely guarded. I can’t even get him to let me borrow it alone for fear I may damage it.

C4 Demo day at Cardiff Reef

C4 Demo day at Cardiff Reef

C4 Waterman, in collaboration with Boardworks and Shot Energy Drink, hosted a demo day at Cardiff Reef on November 27 and had some of their products available for raffle. All proceeds went to the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP).

The event was organized by Ted Rutherford, along with Phillip Rainey, Robbie Ellingson, Rick Thomas, and Andy Fisher.

“There was a very large crowd for a weekday event (it was a Tuesday),” said Ted. “At anyone time we had between eight to 13 stand up paddle surfers out, including surf stars Rob Machado and Rick Thomas.”

Raffle prizes include a C4 2-piece Carbon Standup Paddle, C4 T-shirts, C4 Paddle grips, and The Tom English DVD: “Sport of Kings”. More than $240 was donated to WWP.

C4 plans and Boardworks plan to hold more demo days in the future to support worthwhile causes.

Kudos to C4 Waterman and Boardworks for spearheading this community-veered initiative!

Short Paddle Experiment

After seeing Blane out with his 48′ short paddle I decided to give it a try myself. I took out a 60″ C4 Waterman paddle that I have and decided to give the knee paddle method a try today. The conditions were windy, 10 to 20 mph and small waves but I need the exercise and decided to go out anyway. Continue reading ‘Short Paddle Experiment’

Paddle Scuff Mark Removal

paddle_scuff_remover.jpg

It’s almost inevitable that the side of our stand up paddle boards get those irritating black scuff marks from our paddles hitting the rails of the board. I used to use car polish to get it off but sometimes it took a lot of scrubbing and other times it wouldn’t come off at all.

Dave Chun of Kialoa Answers Questions About Paddles (Part 4)

DSC04542.JPG

Last month I spoke with Dave Chun, founder of Kialoa Paddles, about his paddles, which he has been manufacturing since 1990. Dave started with stand up paddles in 1999. I got him to answer some questions from our stand up paddle surf community at Wet Feet Hawaii’s store. You gotta tune out the noise from the store because we shot this during business hours.
