Interview with Scott Trudon at the 2012 Molokai 2 Oahu Paddleboard Championships

molokai2oahu-2012-12

As I was leaving the finish, I ran into Scott Trudon who gave me some insight into his race experience at the 2012 Molokai 2 Oahu Paddleboard Championships. Scott competed in the SUP 3-man division with teammates Mark Raaphorst and Junya McGurn. Mark is the mind and energy behind the SIC brand of race boards and these guys are in great shape. Scott told he he’s 54 years old but you would never be able to tell that when racing him because he’s still so darn fast and he’s still in top athletic shape.

molokai2oahu-2012-37

I caught up with Dave Kalama at the 2012 Molokai 2 Oahu Paddleboard Championships. Dave was the SUP unlimited division runner up to Connor Baxter by 30 seconds. They battled back and forth the entire 30 something miles and it came down to the absolute finish where Connor won by a hundred yards or so.

I caught up with Connor Baxter, winner of the SUP unlimited division of the 2012 Molokai 2 Oahu Paddleboard Championships and got his perspective on the race and how he won. It’s even more impressive because the previous week he had strep throat and was out of commission. Looks like the teens have taken over the race world and Connor is leading the way.

Why Connor Baxter Dominates in the Water

I was talking with Karen Baxter (Connor’s mom) and she mentioned that Connor was sponsored when he was 6 years old. That was unreal. Then she shared all these crazy stories of how Connor would ride on people’s backs, front of windsurfers, etc so I asked her to send some pictures. You can see for yourself. After seeing these pictures, it’s not hard to understand why Connor is so comfortable in the ocean and why he’s been dominating in the water. Am I a Connor fan boy? Yes. Not only is he a good stand up paddler, he’s also a great guy from a nice family. I hope you enjoy these old ads that Karen sent. She also sent the captions.

2011 Namotu World Paddle Challenge Event #1 – Recap by Connor Baxter

01

Connor Wins the Overall Title in Fiji!!!

The 2011 Namotu World Paddle Challenge was a great event. The first day they started off big and ran the long distance race first. They said the race was going to be 19 miles, but it ended up being 23 miles. The race was from Natadola Beach on the main island to Namotu Island and there were about 15 of us at the starting line. We were all on 12′6″ race boards – which made the crossing that much more challenging. It was a beach start and once I heard go – it was on.
