race-board-comparison-1

I was cleaning out my storage area and decided to shoot this video to show the differences between a couple Bark Race SUP’s and SIC’s. The boards are very different. Since I already did individual posts on these boards, this video will just show them side by side. Continue reading ‘Bark SUP and SIC SUP Race Board Comparison’

Todd Bradley Pocket Coaching SUP Instruction Session 2 – Randy

todd-bradley-pocket-coaching-session-2-33

These next couple of videos from Todd Bradley’s ‘pocket coaching’ series are with Randy Lui-Kwan. Randy just got into SUP paddling in 2009 but don’t let that fool you because I’ve watched him improve super fast and now is averaging very good times for downwinders. I met Randy when Harris Chang sold him a SUP and then invited him to come with us. Now I paddle with Randy quite a bit.

Steelcore Security Straps

steelcore-security-straps-3

I came across the Steelcore Security Straps last year but was only able to take very short video of it. Then I saw the Steelcore tent at the 2009 Battle of the Paddle and decided to check it out. This time I was able to take a longer video where they demo how strong the security straps are. Check it out:

Humpback Whale Sighting

humpback-whale-sighting-10

In early February 2010, I planned to go on a downwinder with some friends. This was the Sunday after the Punahou carnival so I wanted to work off some of the calories I took in from the carnival. Yes, I ate way too many malasadas. We met at 8 am and got skunked by the wind so it became a no winder distance paddle. Flat water paddling feels like slow motion and it was pretty hot and sunny. As you can see in the pics, the water was really nice and had a glistening effect from the sun.

Todd Bradley Pocket Coaching SUP Instruction Session 2 – Harris

todd-bradley-pocket-coaching-session-2-12

This next video of Todd Bradley’s ‘pocket coaching’ series is with Harris Chang AKA Harns (ever since the 2009 Coast Guard Race). Harris and I got into downwinders and SUP around the same time and both of us have been racking our brains on how to improve. This is a good video of Harris’ improvement during Todd’s coaching session. Continue reading ‘Todd Bradley Pocket Coaching SUP Instruction Session 2 – Harris’

S.I.C. S-16 Standamaran Race SUP

Here’s the next creation from the mind of Mark Raaphorst. This is crazy. Mark says the S-16 can sustain a 6.5 mph pace…unreal. I’ll check it out on Maui next week.

Bark 18′ and S.I.C. F-18 SUP Stand Up Paddle Racing Boards

bark-18-and-sic-f-18-sup-stand-up-paddle-racing-boards-01

A while back we got a chance to demo an older model flat water Bark 18′ SUP side by side with the SIC F-18. I went with Randy Lui-Kwan and we switched off. These boards were very different even though they are both 18′ displacement hull models. Also, the Bark was a bit older, I think from early 2009 or late 2008. The picture above shows the F-18 on the left and Bark 18′ on the right. Continue reading ‘Bark 18′ and S.I.C. F-18 SUP Stand Up Paddle Racing Boards’

Todd Bradley Pocket Coaching SUP Instruction Session 2 – Ray

todd-bradley-pocket-coaching-session-2-32

Here’s Todd Bradley’s ‘pocket coaching’ session with Ray Shiraishi. Ray is riding an early model custom SIC F-14 and I think he weighs 150 lbs or so. Ray is already a pretty fast racer who did the Molokai Channel race tandem last year. This video is a good example how someone with some experience and who trains a lot can improve with small adjustments to technique. Joe Bark 14′ SUP Stand Up Paddle Racing Board

bark-14-sup-stand-up-paddle-board-03

On my recent visit to Joe Bark’s HQ, he showed me their latest racing stand up paddle board, the 14′ “Dominator”. According to Joe, it is the fastest and most stable 14′ that they have ever put out. They tested over 20 prototypes to get this exact board. The “Dominator” is shaped similar to one of their 12′6″ boards, just stretched out with a few contour changes. It has a flat deck which goes into a dome at the nose, a wide square tail, flat bottom and a piercing nose.

During my recent visit to the C4 Waterman HQ, I had the chance to take some pictures of their new inflatable SUP stand up paddle board, the iSUP. I haven’t been able to demo the iSUP yet but it looks like a fun, family board, especially for the kids. This one may be perfect for my son.

Todd Bradley Paddling Tips – Top Arm and Grip

todd-bradley-paddling-tips-top-arm-and-grip-09

There’s been some confusion regarding how Todd Bradley uses his top arm to push forward during his paddle stroke. I was at his office and started asking him to clarify the technique and then thought it would be better to just film his explanation.
